Madame Tussauds Singapore launch of a wax figure of iconic Singapore girl

Madame Tussauds Singapore and Singapore Airlines announced the launch of a wax figure of the iconic Singapore Girl, one of Singapore’s best known icons.

The figure is modelled after Ms Nur Surya Binte Mohamed Ambiah, a flight stewardess with Singapore Airlines (SIA) who joined in 2007 but left to start a family in 2011 and rejoined SIA in 2012 under the Returning Crew Scheme.

“We are truly delighted to have created a wax figure of the Singapore Girl; she is a global icon and the epitome of grace and hospitality. Representing a leading Asian brand, the iconic Singapore Girl is well-known all over the world and therefore we wanted to feature her in our attraction which aims to showcase the best of Singapore!” said Ms Sharon Wong, Marketing Manager, Madame Tussauds Singapore.

“The Singapore Girl, with her distinctive sarong kebaya, is a global icon and one of the most instantly recognizable figures worldwide. She is perennial and appeals to both young and old. Our customers have a strong emotional connection with our brand as a result of her iconic image. Her contribution to SIA’s brand is invaluable and we are excited for her to be featured in Madame Tussauds Singapore,” said Mr Marvin Tan, Singapore Airlines Senior Vice President Cabin Crew.

This is the second figure of a Singapore Girl to be produced by Madame Tussauds. The first was modelled after Ms Lim Suet Kwee and was launched in 1993. Ms Lim, who is now Assistant Manager for Crew Performance, played a crucial role in the selection process for the new Singapore Girl wax figure.

Several factors were considered during the selection process, the most important of which was the fact that she should embody the characteristics of the Singapore Girl, such as Asian grace, hospitality and commitment to service. Other factors include her poise and confidence in presenting herself.

In September 2014, the Madame Tussauds team met Surya for an eight hour sitting which involved collecting measurements, photos, costume donations, a hand cast, hair samples, a signature and checks for eye colour matches. About 500 precise body and facial measurements were taken. Ms Lim was also present at the sitting to provide Surya with guidance, based on her past experience. The figure was created in London and took approximately three months to complete. Surya’s wax figure is wearing an SIA sarong kebaya cabin crew uniform, donated by SIA.

Madame Tussauds is one of the world’s most popular visitor attractions, drawing millions of visitors across the world every year. The attraction features some of Singapore’s most popular celebrities, as well as International and Asian A-list celebrities from around the world. Madame Tussauds Singapore is located at Imbiah Lookout on Sentosa and sits alongside Images of Singapore LIVE which is now open to the public. Images of Singapore LIVE introduce an entirely new element with live actors, telling stories about Singapore’s history. The two attractions are linked by the ‘Spirit of Singapore’ boat ride.

Visit Singapore and see the iconic Singapore girl at Madame Tussauds.

Jollibee's joy of #MaagaAngPasko overseas

Jollibee shares the joy of Maaga angPasko overseas! On its 20th year, the Jollibee Maaga ang Pasko sought to spread holiday cheer to even more children not just in the Philippines but overseas as well.

Jollibeeu2019s annual toy and book drive made its way to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, enabling schoolchildren to experience the joy of giving.
For the second year in a row, Jollibee stores in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuwait once again opened their doors to accept donations and engage global Pinoys to send gifts for their youngkababayans.

Jollibee Vietnam did its own adaptation of the campaign (“Christmas is Coming”) to benefit local kids. The store teams in Vietnam led a tour in primary schools in Ho Chi Minh to gather toy and book donations. Making the first international caravan even brighter is a special appearance of everyone’s favorite friend, Jollibee. The fast-food chain’s growing network paved the way in bringing the campaign to foreign shores.

To date, Jollibee has 50 branches in Vietnam, three in Kuwait and one each in Hong Kong and in Singapore.

Filipino communities in Singapore readily opened their hearts to donate toys and books to the Maaga ang Pasko campaign.
Filipino communities overseas also shared their blessings by making online donations through the Jollibee Maaga ang Pasko microsite (www.jollibee.com.ph/MaagaAngPasko).

With the help of partners Toy Kingdom, Goodwill Bookstore and Blink, they were able to donate book bundles and toy packs to the Philippines.

“Through the continuous help of various individuals and organizations, naging tunay na pinakamaaga, pinakamahaba at pinakamasaya ang Pasko. ( The recent Christmas truly became the earliest, longest and jolliest),” said Jollibee Vice President for Marketing Harvey Ong.

Since it was launched two decades ago, Maaga ang Pasko has brought early Christmas cheer to over 300,000 children nationwide, through the gift of over 1.5 million toys and books. Generous Filipinos also signed up as Jolly Family Toy Scouts, volunteering their time and energy to clean and prepare donations during the campaign’s clean-up phase.

Singapore Airlines Business Class customers can now enjoy the Prelude “Grands Crus” from Taittinger

Business Class customers on Singapore Airlines can now enjoy the exquisite taste of the Prelude “Grands Crus” from Taittinger.

Produced by one of the few remaining family-owned champagne houses, Prelude “Grands Crus” is made with the first pressings of an equal portion of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, selected from Grand Cru vineyards.

“We’re pleased to be offering Taittinger Prelude “Grands Crus” to our Business Class customers. Prelude “Grands Crus” is made solely from the best Grand Cru vineyards in the Taittinger family’s own estate and is then aged for more than five years in their cellars. For elegance in the glass and exclusivity in the air, this is something really special,” said Singapore Airlines Wine Panel member Oz Clarke.

Clarke is the newest member of the Singapore Airlines Wine Panel that selected this champagne. The panel also includes Michael Hill-Smith, the first Australian to pass the challenging Master of Wine examinations, and Jeannie Cho Lee, the first Asian to be awarded the Master of Wine title.

“Our new Business Class offering is testament to the lengths we go to for our customers to enjoy champagne from one of the best vineyards in the world. This outstanding champagne is a joyous blend of finesse and complexity, which will certainly delight the most discerning palates,” said Senior Vice President Product & Services, Mr Tan Pee Teck.

Around 194,000 bottles of champagne are consumed on Singapore Airlines flights annually. Currently, Singapore Airlines is the only airline that serves the rare and highly coveted Grand Cru Red Burgundy and two prestige cuvées, Dom Perignon and Krug Grand Cuvée, in tandem.

TLC SUMMER BRO-MANCE BLOOMS AS ‘BLUR’ BASSIST ALEX JAMES BONDS WITH TATTOOED AUSSIE CHEF MATT STONE OVER FOOD THAT ROCKS

45 year old Alex James made his name as a member of famous rock band, Blur, and is now an author, father and farmer who makes award-winning artisan cheeses. In RECIPES THAT ROCK, Alex goes on a crusade to find great music, unique characters and delectable cheeses. Alex has hosted the food and music festival ‘Jamie Oliver presents The Big Feastival with Alex James’ on his farm in September 2012.

26 year old Matt Stone started his career at Margaret River’s Leeuwin Estate and is currently the executive chef at Perth’s ‘Greenhouse’ restaurant. He rocks tattoos, an anti-establishment attitude and passion for sustainability, green issues, food and art installations.

Matt has put ‘Greenhouse’ at the front of Perth’s dining culture in just their first year of trade and has been awarded numerous accolades. Matt took out Gourmet Traveller’s prestigious Best New Talent 2011, West Australia’s Good Food Guide’s Best Young Chef 2011 and Greenhouse won the Good Food Guide’s Best New Restaurant for 2011.

Rock star turned cheesemaker – check. Homegrown Aussie chef complete with tattoos – check. Open top car cruising around the Margaret River region – check. Alex James and Matt Stone heads west of Australia to take a journey of discovery around the Margaret River region in the six-part series, RECIPES THAT ROCK. Together, they will discover unique produce, meet the people behind them, soak in the stunning surf and scenery and draw inspiration from what they find for some uniquely Australian recipes.

With pristine beaches, lush vineyards and a mosaic of natural wonders, Margaret River is one of Australia’s most picturesque and charming regions perfect for taking a family vacation or romantic getaway. So why would two rock ‘n’ roll loving men want to visit Margaret River? One thing Alex James, former bassist of rock band Blur, and Matt Stone, one of Australia’s youngest, most notable chefs, have in common is their love of food and that’s exactly where Margaret River delivers. In each half hour episode of RECIPES THAT ROCK, the duo will take a look at the culinary delights and freshly picked produce across Margaret River – from Yallingup (aboriginal for ‘Place of Love’) to the beachside town of Prevelly – that make it Australia’s premium gourmet region.

Once a chilled out surfing town, Margaret River has long been a nirvana for wine fans. But more recently, artisan cheese, chocolate and olive oil producers have made it their home alongside outstanding microbreweries. Inspired by the high quality Asian dishes and Pacific Rim cuisine, Alex and Matt cook up feasts like sticky Vietnamese pork, Mexican spiced abalone with avocado and mango salad, barbecued marron with grilled asparagus and beach herbs, and delicious desserts like a liquid-centered chocolate cake and sheep milk ice-cream with fruits, pistachios and rose petal syrup.

From beachside barbecues to underground (literally!) didgeridoo concerts, Alex and Matt also explore the sights, sounds and smells of the region to gain an immersive experience. Not only do the boys cook up a storm in the kitchen, they’re game enough to get down and dirty hive-hunting for gooey golden honey, scouring the aqua-blue beaches to hand pick abalone and even play catch with some piglets stuck on an island off the mainland of a free-range pig farm.

The boys continue ticking off their food lover’s must-do list: hunting for black truffles, touring the local wineries, catching their own dinner and meeting with experts who share special tricks of the trade while rubbing shoulders with renowned chefs from around the globe – Alex Atala, Alvin Leung, Heston Blumenthal, Rene Redzepi and Tetsuya Wakuda to name a few – as the gourmet world descends on the region for Margaret River’s Gourmet Escape.

Experience the amazing produce, cook the recipes, hear the music and see the stunning surf and scenery that make Margaret River so incredibly unique in RECIPES THAT ROCK.

GrabTaxi secures additional funding from Vertex Venture Holdings

Number one mobile taxi booking app by downloads and bookings in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and The Philippines

The future of taxi booking is now, as more markets embrace mobile taxi booking in Southeast Asia.
GrabTaxi, an automated smartphone taxi booking platform, is poised to extend its leadership position and expand into new markets in the region.

Grab Taxi will be able to support an even larger number of taxi drivers and commuters, thanks to additional funding from investors including Vertex Venture Holdings, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings.

Vertex Venture is the lead investor in additional funding into GrabTaxi, while another group of angel investors from Malaysia are providing financial support to this young start-up. CIMB, a leading ASEAN universal bank, headquartered in Malaysia has been appointed the main financier by GrabTaxi.

The GrabTaxi concept was developed by two ex-Harvard Business School students back in 2011 to solve two main issues in the taxi industry – create safer and reliable rides for passengers and improve drivers’ livelihood.

GrabTaxi Founder and Group CEO Anthony Tan said, “From our humble beginnings, GrabTaxi has become the largest and most widely used taxi booking mobile app in the region. In fact, we have fifteen times more booking volume than our nearest competitors. Our own regional survey showed that we’re at the top of our consumer’s minds. More than 50 percent of them aren’t aware of any other service available except for GrabTaxi.”

“The additional investment will allow us to tap into new markets and cement our leadership position as the best and biggest taxi booking mobile app in the region. Our teams are growing and passionate about providing the best service to taxi drivers and commuters. We continue to invest in the best local talent in each market because we want to build a world class team that responds to local demands.”

Around the region

GrabTaxi is the clear industry leader in the five countries that it currently operates in. More than 250,000 people in the region use GrabTaxi at least once a month with the app already being downloaded onto more than one million mobile devices to date. There is a taxi booking through GrabTaxi every two seconds across the region.

As a humble for-profit social start-up, GrabTaxi believes that business and social value can be achieved in parallel. They believe that being a double bottom line company, which focuses on social good as well as economic benefit and enriching the lives of our two key stake holders – taxi drivers and passengers – have enabled us to come this far.

GrabTaxi’s ‘Share your Ride’ function, which allows users to share their journey through social media or messaging apps with friends and family, has provided extra security for passengers that has never been available before. GrabTaxi also allows users to rate their drivers and view their information, giving users peace-of-mind when booking taxis. Drivers under the GrabTaxi network have experienced a 30% to 300% increase in revenue and our passengers feel safer with our service.

Tan was keen to point out that GrabTaxi takes all customer feedback seriously.

“It is our policy to suspend any drivers and passengers found guilty of wrongdoings upon thorough investigation. Our stakeholders are always pleasantly surprised when we call them to say that action has been taken,” said Tan.

The funding

This additional investment is a testament to the effectiveness of GrabTaxi and how it has made a significant impact in the markets that they have entered. Vertex Venture funding has provided the impetus to ensure GrabTaxi moves ahead at a strong pace in each market.

“GrabTaxi is a start-up that has shown tremendous potential and we’re confident that it will continue to dominate the taxi booking industry in the region. We invest in potential champions which have developed new technology platforms or business models that disrupt the incumbents and old inefficient ways of doing things. We clearly see GrabTaxi as one such champion in the making. We are very happy to be an investor in GrabTaxi and we will continue to provide strong support both financially and in strategic value-add to strengthen GrabTaxi leadership position in this region,” said Chua Kee Lock, Group President & CEO of Vertex Venture Holdings.

On being the proud financier of GrabTaxi, Dato' Lee Kok Kwan, CEO, Corporate Banking, Treasury and Markets, CIMB Group said, “From a home-grown start-up, to becoming a dominant Southeast Asia powerhouse in the taxi booking industry today in just 2 short years, this is a clear testament of GrabTaxi’s foresight and resolute tenacity. Similar to how CIMB had grown to become the leading ASEAN bank from our humble beginnings as a small Malaysia investment bank, we are glad to be able to support start-ups like GrabTaxi in achieving their greater aspirations.”

Singapore Tourism Board's new marketing campaign: "Singapore, "See where the world is heading"

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) recently launched its marketing campaign for the Philippines,  entitled “Singapore. See where the world is heading,” a key source market for Singapore. As part of a series of differentiated marketing campaigns previously launched in China, Australia, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, this campaign is similarly designed with the Filipino visitors’ needs in mind.
‘Singapore. See where the world is heading,’ aims to encourage Filipinos to experience the pulse of the world through the various innovative and world class experiences Singapore offers.

“Over the past years, we have been actively engaging the Filipino market to better understand their needs and preferences. By incorporating these insights into the ‘Singapore. See where the world is heading.’ marketing campaign, we are confident of being able to better curate and deliver offerings and experiences that are customised to the Filipino traveller in order to engage them at a deeper and more meaningful level,” says Mr Kenneth Lim, Regional Director, Southeast Asia (II) and Oceania, Singapore Tourism Board.

Recognising the unique, evolving needs of the Filipino traveller

The Filipino consumer today is becoming more evolved and deliberate in terms of planning and choosing their holiday destination, and vacationing has become an important lifestyle choice. They typically travel as families, ‘barkada’ (group of friends), or couples to bond through shared experiences. A large majority are free and independent travellers (FIT) who plan their own itineraries, and rely heavily on recommendations by family, friends and online communities.

Through in-market engagements with consumers and travel partners, it was found that most Filipinos have a dated and surface-level awareness of Singapore. Those who have visited the city in the past three years were pleasantly surprised by the transformed Singapore, offering a multitude of rich experiences easily accessible in a comfortable and safe environment.

Tailoring differentiated experiences for Filipino travellers

With a deeper understanding of the Filipino consumer needs as well as recognizing the strengths of Singapore as a destination regarded by the Filipinos, the campaign ‘Singapore. See where the world is heading’ is therefore designed to highlight the evolving and ever-changing landscape of Singapore, and as a destination, being able to provide those aspirational experiences in entertainment, dining, sight-seeing and shopping as favoured by Filipinos, to enjoy with their loved ones.

Following teaser ads to generate excitement of the campaign launch, STB unveiled its ‘Singapore. See where the world is heading’ marketing campaign on 11 February 2014 at Greenbelt 3 Park.

Filipinos will get to enjoy an amazing Supertree installation inspired by Singapore’s own Gardens by the Bay at Greenbelt 3 Park and have a taste of how far Singapore has come as a destination and truly exemplify a destination that is always pushing boundaries and representing where the world is heading. The Supertree structure offers a unique fusion of nature and technology, just like the country itself. The Supertree display will be up until 10 March 2014, where mall-goers can deepen their awareness of Singapore with snippets of facts, and prizes being offered for trivia organized throughout the day. They can post photos of themselves with the Supertree with the hashtag #SGSupertree.
In tune with how Filipinos regard Singapore as constantly renewing and being at the cutting edge, the campaign will also leverage heavily on digital to reach out to the Filipino consumers. Specifically, the campaign includes a microsite and consumer interactive digital platform called #TheCuriousTraveller at yoursingapore.com/ph and YourSingapore Planner, downloadable itinerary planner mobile application that hopes to encourage Filipinos, not just to look at the aspirational experiences Singapore has to offer, but discover them on their own, provoking and inspiring them to become their own #TheCuriousTraveller.

Users can opt to download the recommended itinerary based on whom they are travelling with and if they are heading to Singapore for shopping, food, sightseeing and entertainment or all of the above. Or they can choose to create their own itinerary where there are 40 experiences to choose from. The YourSingapore Planner app is available on Google Play or iTunes App Store.

As the sharing of personal travel experiences and travel tips are important to Filipinos, STB has appointed a key opinion leader to be the face of the campaign through #TheCuriousTraveller. Erwan Heussaff was on hand to share his experiences at the launch and he will be sharing his exciting adventures in Singapore on yoursingapore.com/ph/thecurioustraveller.

Lastly, to complement the digital efforts, other channels such as PR, above and below-the-line advertising will sustain the campaign in the coming months, with each platform promoting a refreshing side of Singapore.

“Whatever the reason for travelling – romantic getaway, barkada trip, or relaxing family vacation, the Singapore Tourism Board is dedicated to making sure Filipinos have the ultimate differentiated bonding experience the whole year round,” expressed Ms Sherina Chan, Area Director, Philippines & Brunei, Singapore Tourism Board. “We hope Filipinos will take to our campaign positively, be amazed by the bountiful new offerings that Singapore has to offer and see where the world is heading,” concluded Ms Chan.
