Health News: Unmasking Melasma: Dark-skinned women more at risk

Women of color are more prone to dark patches on the face called melasma.

Also called the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma was considered a pregnancy- and contraceptive-related disorder. But new research showed that even men may suffer from the chronic disorder, possibly for decades, Dr. Claudia Aguirre, neuroscientist and skincare expert, wrote in an article on the International Dermal Institute (IDI).

From the Greek word “melas” meaning black, melasma is prevalent among people with brown or darker skin. It is estimated to affect 8.8 percent of Hispanic females in the United States and about 40 percent of Southeast Asian women, Aguirre added in the same article.

In tropical countries like the Philippines, melasma is common as constant sun exposure stimulates the melanocytes to produce more melanin.

Aging and hormonal fluctuations

Melasma was among the top ten reasons for seeking consultation at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) and among the top ten diseases at the Dermatology Outpatient Department of the Opsital ng Manila Medical Center (OMMC), the 2004-2008 census in the respective hospitals showed.

It recurs throughout middle age and menopause as hormonal fluctuations trigger the disease but picosecond laser treatment can help reduce the unwanted pigmentation.

In the “Cynosure Asia Pacific (APAC) Forum” last month, Dr. Carl Cheng, a certified dermatologist in Taiwan, introduced “picotuning” to “fine tune” the picosecond treatment protocol to the needs of patients with melasma.

While conventional laser devices rely on heat energy, picosecond laser technology induces collagen and elastin to rejuvenate skin, and works on targeted areas within trillionths of a second.

Safer than conventional laser machines

Over a dozen peer-reviewed clinical studies on PicoSure, the world’s first picosecond laser, showed that its side effects were milder compared to older laser machines that caused burning, scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved PicoSure® for treating unwanted tattoos and benign pigmented lesions in 2012, and then acne scars, and wrinkles in 2014.

Cynosure, the leading manufacturer in aesthetic laser devices, spent 13 years to develop PicoSure®.

As the American company celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, it vowed to “continue to build everything on science” and “to expand the variety of products” to address the “rising demand for aesthetic lasers in Asia.”

Haier’s inverter tech brings energy savings beyond standards

Inverter technology has revolutionized home appliances, bringing greater energy efficiencies that translate to more savings.

How much can you really save on an inverter ref?

In particular, refrigerators—which traditionally consume almost 1,800kwh/year—are now being designed with digital inverter compressors that cut down electricity consumption from about 500 to 380kwh/year.

Digital inverters are fast becoming the standard for modern home refrigerators. However, innovations are pushing the limits of what inverters can do to help households enjoy real savings from their appliances.

Greater efficiency, less power

Inverter compressors adapt to the cooling needs of refrigerators. Unlike conventional counterparts that consume the same amount of energy whether the fridge is frequently used or not, inverter compressors “slow down” when they don’t need to actively decrease the temperature, such as at night. This lessens energy consumption while reducing wear and tear on the compressor.

Haier takes the technology a step further with its FICA Ref Series.

“Our FICA Ref Series is equipped with an FD-Plus inverter compressor, which is integrated into a single conversion chip for better reliability compared with other inverter compressors,” said Haier's Senior Product Manager for Refrigerators and Air Conditioners, Jennifer Samson.

Previous compressors from the brand had frequency plates that consumed 0.6W on standby power. The newer FD-Plus inverter compressor cuts this down further to less than 0.1W when idle—the lowest in the refrigerator industry.

“The chip also runs on a 32-bit operating system, unlike typical digital inverters that run on a 16-bit OS. This greatly enhances cooling performance for better food storage and cost efficiency," Samson added.

All in all, the FD-Plus inverter consumes power from 245 to 310kwh/year.

“The cost of electricity is often a major setback when it comes to modern conveniences like refrigerators,” Samson said. “This is a challenge that Haier wants to address to help families enjoy life at home without the high cost.”

These benefits come on top of other features such as a 360-degree duct that allows pervasive cooling air flow, a brighter LED lamp that saves more energy, tempered glass shelving that can load up to 120kg of food, and anti-odor and anti-bacterial deodorizer that helps preserve food quality.

Haier’s two-door top-mount FICA refrigerators are available in three different sizes: 8.5, 9.3, and 11.1 cubic feet. The suggested retail price for each is P20,998, P23,598, and P26,598 respectively.

All FICA refrigerators come with a two-year warranty on parts and labor, as well as a ten-year warranty for the compressor.

“Home appliances should be designed to enhance the lifestyle of the consumer. That’s why for the Filipino market, Haier combines good quality, affordable cost, and excellent after-sales service to provide every family with the comfort they deserve,” Samson said.

Protecting the Future: A Parent's Guide to Getting an Education Plan

One of the most important things a parent should do is to ensure that their children receive the best education that money can buy. As parents, we must make sure that we are financially stable enough to put our children through school. And we must also acknowledge that our children's dream university or college might be more expensive than we’d expect, especially since education costs have been rising every year. Hence, planning ahead and making investments for our children's education, through an education plan, is very crucial.

As such, getting your children (or your future children) an education plan should be one of the first things parents should aim for, aside from being able to provide for the family. However, before getting one, parents must know and understand the features and benefits of an education plan, as well as the expenses that go along with it.

Every education plan, offered by many different companies, has a different set of benefits. This means that you have many things to consider while shopping for an education plan that fits your budget and your future goals. Do you get the pay-out benefits as soon as your child enters high school? Or is it for a college fund? How much do you need, and how much can the education plan give you?

Here are some helpful tips on getting the right education plan for your kid:

  • Always make sure that the benefits of the plan you are looking at are aligned with your needs. Better if there are additional features included like life or accident insurance so your children are still guaranteed to receive the education plan benefits in case something happens to you.
  • Research on the companies offering education plans. You’ll want to make sure that the company you are getting an education plan from is financially strong, trustworthy, reliable, and capable of keeping its promises. You want to be assured that you will receive the benefits on-time and in full, without having to worry about the company going bankrupt.
  • Save early: Start saving as early as possible so that you can be sure that you are financially stable enough to pay for your child’s education plan.
  • Find other sources to fund your child's education savings by exploring other resources of growing your money, such as investments, having passive income, and so forth.
  • Divide financial tasks between the two parents. Having mutual spending decisions, and constant communication about money is very important.

Education plans are something everyone should have for their children. Sometimes, the education we want for our children will cost more than an arm and a leg. A plan helps make that education more affordable.

Now that you know what kind of education plan you are looking for, you are ready to send your child to their dream university-- even before they've graduated high school.

Elementary School Students Use Moverio Smart Glasses as Class Communication Tool

“Let’s make healthy forests!” and used Epson’s Moverio* smart glasses as a communication tool to make school work even more engaging.

(Japan) - Takashima Elementary School in Nagano, Japan, has introduced a unique extracurricular activity in which each class decides what to study every year.

Epson engineers began their activities with the children a year ago (Stargazing using Moverio) with the aim of making learning fun.

Using the help of the same engineers, the children, who had been studying forests, wanted to communicate using leading-edge information products to ensure that people could understand the importance of nature.

On July 7, the children were divided into nine groups. Based on themes decided through discussions with the engineers, they uploaded to the Moverio photos and videos that they had taken themselves of the forest alongside materials they prepared on a PC.

Using an application on a tablet device, the same images were displayed on multiple Moverio units. With this feature, each group could share their thoughts about the forest among the entire group. The presenting group had created a quiz, and the children wearing Moverio all cheered when the slide appeared before their eyes, as if it were floating on a big screen in front of them.

By participating in the activity, the children clearly identified who they wanted to communicate to, with comments like, “I want my grandparents to enjoy these images of the forest since they can’t go themselves.” They plan to make some changes to the content, and improve the quality of their presentation using the ‘magic glasses.’

*Worn like glasses, Moverio smart glasses offer users the ability to enjoy crystal clear video entertainment, games, music, and web content, anytime and anywhere. It displays what appears as large semi-transparent images floating against the surrounding background.

The Moverio BT-200 is intended for ages from junior high school and older, but for these extracurricular lessons, our engineers were present to ensure safety, and time limits were set for use of the glasses.

Electrolux, Over 100 years of Vacuum Expertise and Innovations

Electrolux, since 1912,  has been revolutionizing the cleaning industry with well-thought designs and efficient technologies that offer the ultimate cleaning experience for homes across the globe.

Lux 1

Considered a visionary and sales genius, company founder Axel Wenner-Gren saw the potential of adapting the industrial vacuum cleaner for use in homes, marking the beginning of the end for brooms in the modern home. Enter the Lux 1 in 1912, the world’s first home vacuum cleaner - affordable, efficient and smaller than its industrial counterparts (though still weighing a hefty 14 kg!).

Model V

Only nine years later, the next vacuum cleaner, Model V was introduced. Model V was a perfect example of how Electrolux pioneered innovative thinking. The new vacuum was completely different than the relatively heavy and immobile Lux 1.

The Model V was the first vacuum turned sideways and it was equipped with runners also making it the first truly mobile vacuum cleaner. The Model V was such a success that Swedish maids protested when it was launched.

Another of Wenner-Gren’s pioneering moves was the introduction of home sales.

The sales representatives would show-case the new product, while at the same time meet with the decision maker who would eventually approve the investment, as well as gain valuable insights on how consumers actually used the products. In the Philippines, children of the ‘80s would surely remember the Electrolux man and his famous “Knock on your door” jingle as he sold vacuum cleaners from door to door.

Through the years, Electrolux also pioneered other firsts such as the first robotic vacuum cleaner and the Ergorapido, the first cordless stick cleaner that complimented the trend of grab-and-go cleaning.

Backed up by 100 years of heritage, Electrolux has since proven its understanding and knowledge on consumer needs leading to insightful and inspiring innovations.

In recognition of its design and innovations, Electrolux vacuum cleaners have received numerous acknowledgements and remarkable awards including; the Swedish ‘Good Design’ Award, the ‘Red Dot’ Design Award, the ‘iF Design’ Award, the ‘Plus X’ Award for ‘high quality, design and ease of use.’ and the ‘European Excellence & Eurobest’ Award for outstanding European PR communications.

ErgoClean ZVE4110FL is the perfect balance between performance and design. Understanding that space is a premium in urban homes, ErgoClean addresses the need for convenience and flexibility - its compact body ensures easy storage and its 4G cyclonic technology that provides powerful suctioning for optimal cleaning.

Electrolux Flexio II Z931

Flexio II also features an effective filtration system that traps dust and airborne particles, resulting in a more hygienic cleaning process.

ABS-CBN and Dreamscape Television Entertainment proudly presents ‘Till I Met You, the newest TV series that marked the return of James Reid-Nadine Lustre (JaDine) tandem's TV appearance since On the Wings of Love.

The TV series set to show that real love wins, “Till I Met You” starring the love team of real-life couple James Reid and Nadine Lustre, with primetime’s new leading man JC Santos, which starts on Monday (August 29).

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone, "Till I Met You" was shot at Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, Greece! Aside from the kilig moments, viewers are set to see the breathtaking sceneries of Greece as some of the scenes were shot in Santorini and other parts of the country.

Iris, (Nadine Lustre), Ali (JC Santos) and Basti (James Reid) find themselves in an unusual love triangle. As conflicts arise they are led into the difficult situation whether to fight for their love or save their friendship.

Iris (Nadine) an achiever yet simple girl who wishes to give her family a better life. Having grown up without a father, she lives happily with her siblings and her mother Cassandra (Carmina Villarroel).

Together they will chase for their dreams in Greece, where they will meet Basti (James Reid), a rebellious son who works as a tour guide in the country. Living only by himself, he will find the acceptance he has been looking for from Iris and Ali.
However, their friendship will be put to test as Basti falls for Iris, deeply hurting Ali. This will lead them to the point of choosing between what matters more: love or friendship.
Will Iris and Ali still fulfill the dreams they built together? Will Basti fight for his love for Iris? Are they ready to risk everything to have the one they love?
James Reid, Nadine Lustre and JC Santos

During the grand press conference, James went as far as to say that the story in "Till I Met You" is better than "OTWOL (On the Wings of Love)," a kilig-filled romantic series.

“Everyday I am more in love with her (Nadine),” said James.

Nadine said that this new story is on friendship and love. "Katulad ng sa amin ni James, start with friendship. Then learn to love the guy beyond friendship," shared Nadine.

JC Santos

JC Santos, the third wheel in JaDine's new series, plays the role of Alejandro, the common friend of the characters of James Reid and Nadine Lustre.

He is a theater actor at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He became a singer and dancer at Hong Kong Disneyland and at Universal Studios Singapore before going to New York to study musical theater. He has played supporting roles in TV in his past projects.

JC said that he did not have any second thoughts when he finally offered a role. He was overwhelmed when he learned that he would be one of the lead stars of "Till I Met You."

"Actually nung time na 'yun, iniisip ko okay na ako kung aawayin ko lang si James dito. Gulat na gulat po ako at hindi ako makapaniwala na isa ako sa mga bida. Nagpapasalamat po ako sa pagtitiwala talaga. Punong puno ang puso ko ngayon," he said.

Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) to host the country’s biggest travel trade event - PHITEX on September 4-6

TPB is bringing a larger and improved PHITEX this year

The Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) is set to host the country’s biggest and most significant travel trade event – the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX), on September 4-6, 2016 at the Marriot Grand Ballroom. In line with the Visit the Philippines Again 2016 (VPA) campaign, this year’s PHITEX is set to once again promote the country as the premier tourist destination among some of the world’s biggest travel and tour buyers.

With this year’s theme “#PHITEX2016: Bigger Business”, TPB is bringing a larger and improved PHITEX with more sessions allocated for business-to-business interactions and better designed pre-tours and post-tours.

Kicking off this week-long event is the 27th Philippine Travel Mart (PTM) on September 2-3 at SMX Convention Center. Organized by the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), PTM is considered to be one of the major travel trade exhibitions in the promotion of domestic and inbound tourism. The event attracts buyers from all over the world as it presents the best and most affordable tour packages in the country.

Highlighting the event is the Travel Exchange (TRAVEX), which includes exclusive business-to-business appointment meetings between Philippine sellers and foreign buyers. By giving them the chance to personally meet the local sellers, buyers are introduced to the Philippines’ marketing trends and practices. In exchange, sellers are given an edge to offer globally competitive tour packages to the international market. These sessions will also provide foreign buyers the opportunity to experience the fun and exciting post tours to main Philippine attractions and destinations.

“PHITEX has been instrumental in strengthening the brand image of the Philippines,” shares TPB Chief Operating Officer Domingo Ramon C. Enerio III. “By introducing the best tourism products and services to the international market and bringing together the different stakeholders in the tourism industry, the country has become an important destination, not only for various international and high-level business and economic meetings but also for travel and trade. In fact, the country has welcomed more than 2.5 million visitors from January to May 2016. This is 13.02% higher than the accumulated arrivals in January to May 2015.”

Now on its 15th year, PHITEX has been continuously sustaining the growth that the Philippines has gained in the global tourism market.

Reimagining ‘ever after’ for Beauty and the Beast’s finale

Only a few episodes remain before Beauty and the Beast’s series finale and time is running short for Cat Chandler (Kristin Kreuk) and Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan).

Pursued on all fronts by evil forces, the unlikely pairing of Cat and Jay has viewers wondering what ending awaits these fairytale-inspired characters.

The familiar fairy of the same title revolves around a prince who needed to break a fairy’s curse. The prince would only break this spell if a woman would come to love him despite his hideous form. And as he lay dying, the Beast received the love he needed so he could return to his human form.

A 1987show inspired by the fairy tale had no such ending. Instead of having a princely human form, the Beast remained as he was so his inner qualities could stand out. This beloved show was the inspiration of the new series starring Kreuk and Ryan.

If the original series ended that way, what ending awaits Cat and Vincent this time?

A spell that must be broken

Like the fairy tale’s Beast, Vincent also faces a curse. This time, however, he is not dealing with an enchantress. Vincent struggles with the effects of an experiment which caused mutations in his body and gave him superhuman strength.

Vincent and many others used for the experiment were to be sent to Afghanistan to win the war in that country. When the experiment turned awry, the government ordered the immediate deaths of the experiment’s subjects.

While struggling with the beastlike qualities brought about by the experiment, Vincent is then forced to run from those who would kill him.

If one would follow the fairy tale’s original plot, reversing the mutation’s effects could be Vincent’s own transformation and redemption. In the show however, Vincent found himself asking if he in fact wanted to reverse the experiment’s effects or not, when finally faced with a cure.

Not a damsel in distress

One compelling element of the show is how it inverts the tired ‘Beauty’ trope of the old stories. While the fairy tale portrayed Beauty as a prisoner, Kristin Kreuk’s Cat Chandler is anything but a typical damsel in distress.

A detective working for the New York Police Department, Cat is trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s murder—a case that is linked to the experiment performed on Vincent. This unsolved mystery then led Cat to Vincent and the two developed a romance.

But while the two came to love each other, a bitter undercurrent of conflict runs throughout the relationship. Overcoming the odds, Cat and Vincent married despite their personal clashes and the outside forces threatening to pull them apart.

The marriage of the prince and his lady is often the beginning of an idyllic ‘happily ever after’ in fairytales. This was not so for Vincent and Cat as they continued their flight from Vincent’s would-be captors and killers.

Finding themselves on the opposite side of the law, Cat has to find ways to lead these hostile away from Vincent.

‘Love is a battlefield’

This refusal to stick to old fairy tale conventions is the beating heart of the new show. Much like real life, there are no tidy endings, and no single character coming to the rescue of another.

‘Ever after’ then is not just about a prince rescuing a distressed damsel or a princess breaking away from an evil curse. The show doesn’t shy away from the many dangers that a forbidden love brings.

The big question remains: will Vincent finally reclaim his humanity by the series’ end? Yet while this moment has yet to happen, one can say his humanity had already been restored when Cat came into his life.

Perhaps the change that mattered most was not the cure to his condition but Cat’s willingness to love him, flaws and all.

Catch Beauty and the Beast’s series finale on August 31, 9:00PM at RTL CBS Entertainment HD.

Health and Wellness : Marielle's and Cindy's Journey to Weight Loss with InnoGen's LesoFat and LesoCarb

If we have a realistic, specific and measurable goal, what and how really keeps us from reaching it?

Our mission in our lifestyle including health and fitness begins with the desire to attain something. If the desire is defined and strong enough, it will lead you to act. If you act properly and consistently, you will succeed.

InnoGen Pharmaceuticals Inc. heads with Marielle Mamaclay and Cindy Patrimonio

One of the most issue is losing weight to be more fit and healthy.  Held at the MNB Bldg., Quezon City on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, during the press conference dubbed as "Less Is More", InnoGen Pharmaceuticals Inc. shared to us about "Obesity" and discovering how to get more out of life with Less Fat and Less Carb.

Marielle Mamaclay and Cindy Patrimonio

Sharing these stories from the two newest ambassadors of Lesofat and Lesocarb ( anti-obesity medicines):

Cindy Patrimonio’s Weight Loss Story

Cindy Patrimonio, wife of celebrity cager Alvin Patrimonio, feels a lot stronger and healthier nowadays as on the middle part of her 6-month Project Body, a journey to wellness. She has firmly decided to make the change of becoming healthier and fitter.

Cindy said that when she was starting her weight loss journey, Cindy watched videos of extremely obese people and she repeatedly told herself that she won’t let it happen to her.

Cindy was quick to admit being guilty of Yoyo dieting in her younger days. She would compensate eating her favourite food by spending time at the gym. Working out neutralizes her food intake thus she often rely on her physical activity to maintain her ideal weight.

Problem came when Cindy reached the age where metabolisms slows down drastically, she finds herself not being in control of her weight gain. Caught in harsh criticism of the public, Cindy couldn’t care less as she is only accountable for her own body. Realization only came at the time when she decided that she needs to be healthy for her own sake and her family. This was her turning point.

Cindy quips, "I decided I needed to change and start to get healthy last year. I was feeling sluggish, feeling bad about how I looked. Being overweight for 16 years was long enough. I wanted to do it in a healthy and sturdy way. I was also feeling depressed mentally because of certain problems in life and I wanted to divert all that negative energy into something that would be a challenge for me."

Cindy’s biggest challenge was cutting back on her food intake as this is something new to her. She watched a lot of videos and research and soon as she got the hang of it, it was as easy as cooking pancakes according to Cindy.

Another challenge for weight lost is when you run into a plateau, this is common among women and having to level up one’s fitness activity level should be continuous.

Lucky for Cindy, Alvin is all out in supporting her and would often find himself accompanying her every now and then during her work out sessions.

Cindy’s family joins her whenever she hits the gym. And being healthy becomes a part of their priceless bonding moments.

Marielle Mamaclay’s Journey to Weight Loss

Multi-awarded singer feels she can reach her dreams and life goals including a healthy and fit body.

Singing out to a lighter figure nowadays is World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2010 Grand Champion Performer and Vocalist of the World Marielle Mamaclay. Being a performer, one has to look presentable. Thus, when Marielle reached her heaviest weight and started to lose confidence, she felt ugly and cried a lot.

Marielle’s weight problem also took a toll on her health, she found herself getting sick almost every month. This was her wake up call. She still have big dreams for her family and could not let herself go down in spiral due to her weight problem.

She started a healthy diet and increased her physical activity. Weight loss would not be effective if you feel deprived. Thus, Marielle gives herself cheat days, giving in to her cravings of Pizza every once in a while.

Having cheat days are important in keeping up with weight loss struggles as it gives you the much needed balance. Both Cindy and Marielle credit their weight loss journey with the help of LesoFat and LesoCarb. It’s always better to #BeArmedwithLesofat and #ThinkLesocarb.

The supersized population

It is always an amusing picture to see people wanting to lose weight and at just as amusing to keep a positive thought for people who are happy in whatever size they are in. More than the physical attribute, wanting to lose weight should be an indication of an approach to a healthy lifestyle.

Becoming healthy should be on top of everybody’s choice, since obesity is the main culprit of several health risk such as Arthritis, Cancer, Diabetes, Stroke, Heart diseases and Back pain.

Restaurants with Rice-All-You-Can or Unli-Rice have the highest foot traffic. The report is also consistent with the steady rise of Restaurants offering buffet / Eat-All-You-Can in which High Fat food are rampant in their buffet spread. Pair these High- fat food with loads of Carbohydrates then you’re in for a food coma.

How to spot Obesity

Obesity is described as a medical condition in which your body fat has accumulated to the point that it may have an adverse effect on your health. In a 2011 survey, it shows that 22.3% of Filipinos adults are overweight and 6.1% are obese. Philippines is on top of the list together with India as countries with the highest obese population according to a report from United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Another survey by Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) also shows that 3 out of 10 Filipinos are obese which shows an alarming statistics.

In trying to lose weight, we cannot rely on supplements alone. Choosing the right diet coupled with physical activities should be maintained to achieve your desired weight.
