TikTok sends love to the Filipino community in free online concert celebrating content diversity and creative expression

On October 18, 2020, content creators and local celebrities from the Philippines came together for #GenTikTokPH, a two-hour online celebration of Generation TikTok - the diverse community that makes TikTok a place of joy, positivity and inspiration.

Hosted by Macoy Dubs, Generation TikTok was streamed on the TikTok PH account via TikTok LIVE. Viewers were treated to an entertaining program filled with music and dance, side by side with pocket showcases featuring TikTok’s top trends and educational content.

The show was headlined by three local artists who are all avid TikTokers, well-loved by their followers - Actor and singer, Iñigo Pascual, indie folk band, Ben&Ben, and singer-songwriter, Rico Blanco. Each performed a musical set, treating the audience to their top hits and fan favorite tracks.

Interspersed with these musical performances were segments that underscored TikTok’s impactful content, #TikTokU and #itStartsonTikTok. Back in May 2020, #EduTok transformed the platform into a venue for learning everything, from practical life hacks to valuable skills for various careers. Giving the spotlight to educators and professionals like life coach Lyqa Maravilla, pharmacist Arshie Larga and medical intern Kilimanguru. The hashtag is now at 2.3B views and counting.

#GenTikTokPH did not fail to include what TikTok was first popularly known for -- trending dance challenges. TikTok dance creators shared the spotlight to pay tribute to one of TikTok’s biggest trends, Savage Love (Laxed Siren Beat). Each creator put their own spin on the popular dance trend, which features a catchy tune by Jason Derulo.

Meanwhile, the recently concluded campaign #itStartsonTikTok showed how the TikTok community pioneered trends and made online stars out of their favorite creators, and established a safe haven for self-expression and showcasing talents online. Adding more color and diversity to the ever-growing platform, veteran actress Gina Pareño testified how welcoming the TikTok community had been to her.

These viral hashtags are nods of approval to the culture that is very Filipino - value for education and love of entertainment.
“Generation TikTok is here. Everyone has a unique talent to share or a compelling story to tell. We are a community that supports and welcomes the creator in everyone. Through positive, joyful, and inspiring stories, we are spreading happiness and hopefully changing the world, one TikTok at a time,” said John Castro, User and Content Operations Manager, TikTok Philippines.

Co-presented by SM Supermalls and Grab, with major sponsor TNT, Generation TikTok was truly a memorable event for all those who took part in the program, and the audience who enjoyed the show.

8 tips to help your TikToks stand out

When you hear the song “Don’t Start Now” by English singer/songwriter Dua Lipa, what initially comes to mind? Do you imagine the visually stunning music video tied to it, or is your mind flooded with mental images of a plethora of dance covers on TikTok?

Indeed, TikTok has become a global phenomenon and, lately, has sort of become a therapy for most people especially in light of the community quarantines enforced worldwide. And with millions of active users on the platform, coming up with fresh and unique videos may seem like a daunting task.

Fear not because collecting plenty of views, likes, and followers on this rapidly growing platform is not impossible. Here are 8 tips on how to make Tik-Toks that stand out:

Immerse yourself in the “For You” page

Developing ideas and crafting them into your latest TikTok might be difficult due to the sea of clips already out there. But who says you can’t draw inspiration from these clips? Binge watch videos on the “For You” page to get a sense of what’s hot, what’s not, and what hasn’t been created yet.

Use your own audio clips

While TikTok has a vast library of songs and audio clips, they are only offered in segments lasting no more than a minute. Got a favorite? Why not use a separate device to play audio clips of your choice. Be wary of copyright infringement though.

Make every second count

To get a higher viewership count, make sure that the first few seconds of your TikTok has an impact that will easily reel people in. Try baked-in captions or brief and creative intros on your videos to entice viewers to watch your clips entirely.

Showcase your “talent,” but be yourself

TikTok is considered a safe space for people who want to explore and broadcast their skills and talents. Whether it’s dancing, singing, acting, cooking, or showing how talented you are at being talentless--that actually garners a lot of engagement--show the world what makes you, you. Just make sure to maintain authenticity because that is what the audience likes.

Go all out

While you’re at it, make sure to give it your all and showcase the best version of you. Don’t be ashamed of being a bit “extra”. Put on your best outfits, apply makeup, and unleash a burst of energy--it’ll only be a few seconds anyway.

Be relatable

Another way to make your TikToks stand out is to make them as relatable as possible. Try kickstarting ideas with a few unique questions like “How do I react during monumental scenes in a certain renowned movie?” or “How do I look when I wake up on different days of the week?”

Add in multiple hashtags

Maybe you’re thinking: “...but having a ‘gazillion’ hashtags is so 2013.” While that may be true for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, there is certainly zero judgement on the use of hashtags by the TikTok community. In fact, using a ton of hashtags like #fyp and #tiktokph, increases your chances of landing on the “For You” page.

Engage in a “Duet”

Joining forces with fellow “TikTokers” not only allows for wider audience engagement, but ensures a fun and interactive experience. Plus, you get to make new friends in the process.

Bonus tip: Follow influential profiles

Much like in fashion and design, it’s always good to have pegs that are consistent with your style and taste.

Follow your favorite TikTokers and celebrities to be in the loop for latest trends. And while you’re at it, follow the brand on TikTok at @vivophilippines to get fresh and creative updates on products and services.

Cooking shows, digital fitness via Facebook live

A glimpse on the new digital lifestyle

MANILA, Philippines, April, 2020 – Just like everyone else, social media stars, vloggers, musicians, artists, and performers find ways to cope during these trying times. Most of them raise funds to help frontline heroes in the battle against the pandemic. For some, the digital wave becomes a platform to help boost productivity from home.

Boosting the immune system

YouTuber and fitness enthusiast Wil Dasovich recently held a digital fitness campaign to help people boost their immune system.

He had a 15-minute ab-workout which consisted some fat-burning moves, including leg raises, the russian twist, side plank and reach through, and toe reach among others.

According to Dasovich, exercising and eating the right nutrients can help boost the immune system. He also shared some fitness and health tips, including intermittent fasting and autophagy.

For Dasovich, exercising is just one of the many ways to improve productivity at home especially during the quarantine period. “In a time of crisis, how we respond to situations is what defines us,” Dasovich said.

PLDT-Smart powers up work-from-home productivity

Last March 16, the government placed the entire Luzon on lockdown in the hopes of containing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Since then, Filipinos have to quickly adapt to a new lifestyle and work routine — one that requires them to live digital.

Transportation systems have been halted. Malls have been closed. Curfews have been imposed; and work-from-home arrangements have been in place.

The current crisis has forced people to go digital with work meetings held via Microsoft Office Teams or Google Hangouts and people relying heavily on fast Internet and connectivity.

As the entire nation combats the lethal impacts of the pandemic, Filipinos nationwide find better ways to cope and live this new normal. In this digital wave, everyone now relies on a fast internet for work to be done. With this, PLDT and Smart continues to enhance its networks to empower every Filipino, especially in this time of crisis.

To ensure a seamless work and study from home arrangement, PLDT provided a speed boost for Fibr subscribers in which the minimum speed is 25 Mpbs until April 30, 2020. This is applicable to residents of Metro Manila and parts of Greater Manila including Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal.

PLDT and Smart also continuously provides data connectivity, technical support, and communication aid to various frontline health workers and government response teams. Some beneficiaries include the Philippine General Hospital, Research Institute for Tropical Research and several local government units in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Regine Velasquez-Alcasid and her son Nate’s new pinaka-sweet Jollibee commercial together is a must-watch

Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid deeply treasures the relationship she has with her son Nate. The mother-son duo’s sweet connection is put front and center in their newest TV commercial for Jollibee.

Their second commercial together for Jolly Spaghetti, features Regine and Nate’s pinaka-sweet moments as they spend quality time together bonding over the best-tasting (most delicious) Jolly Spaghetti.

Take a glimpse of the mother and son duo’s tender moments in this new Jolly Spaghetti video

Their mother-and-son relationship is full of intimate and loving moments, such as those we see in the video. “He's very sweet,” Regine says of Nate. “He really is malambing ever since. He’s always spending time with me, and our favorite bonding moment is watching TV together. He loves that, and he always wants me to watch what he’s watching.”

Regine shares that they still spend a lot of time together even though Nate is already going to school. “When he doesn't have school, we'll just be in bed together,” she says. “He'll be tinkering with his iPad, then we'll watch TV, then we'll buy Jolly Spaghetti and eat.”

This personal side of Regine and Nate is true to life. She shares that long before they did this commercial, they went to a Jollibee and did something like what they did in the ad. “We went to Jollibee, Nate ordered Jolly Spaghetti for us, we ate and took pictures,” she recounted. “It’s the exact scenario.”

It’s no coincidence that Regine and Nate are Jollibee’s endorsers of choice. Nate simply couldn’t get enough of the meatiest, cheesiest, sweet-sarap Jolly Spaghetti.

“He loves Jolly Spaghetti. This is no joke,” Regine says. “On his first day of taping, he’s like, ‘I want to eat it!’ But he couldn’t yet. If he has a choice, he’ll eat it. He really loves it.”

You also won’t be able to resist the meatiest, cheesiest, sweet-sarap Jolly Spaghetti—especially since the best-tasting Spaghetti is now made even more affordable. You can now get your favorite Jolly Spaghetti Solo for only P50, PHP55.00 for the Jolly Spaghetti w/ Drink, and for birthdays or special occasions the Jolly Spaghetti Family Pan (Good for 4-5) is only PHP200.00. Kyle Echarri with Singaporean singer-songwriter Haven for a new collab single “Imagine”

Young multi-talented artist Kyle Echarri embarks on yet another electrifying adventure as he creates beautiful music with Singaporean singer-songwriter Haven for a new track titled “Imagine.”

Kyle’s team-up with his fellow 16-year-old artist breaks new ground as it is the first international collaboration between StarPOP Philippines, Academy of Rock Singapore, and Cornerstone Music.

"The song 'Imagine' talks about two total strangers who live different lives but have a certain connection. The concept actually is that Haven is from Singapore, Kyle is from the Philippines, so it's like they're from different places and haven't met each other yet but they have a message that they want to convey to each other," StarPOP head Rox Santos explained.

“I really, really liked the story that's why when I did it, I was ecstatic about it and how the finished track turned out to be," Kyle added.

The song, composed by Star Music artist Trisha Denise and StarPOP head Rox Santos, complements Kyle’s pop-infused sound and Haven’s distinct, dreamy style of singing.

Singaporean musician and vocalist Haven started out as a student of Academy of Rock. She joined her first singing competition when she was 13, where she finished third. This, along with the help of the Academy of Rock, propelled her to continue performing at various events like the Singapore Street Festival.

"I want to be an artist that everyone can relate to. I want everyone to be very comfortable with my music, I don't want them to feel intimidated so ‘haven’ means safe place," shared Haven on the meaning behind her name.

The exciting collaboration also comes after Kyle released his “Pangako” single last year and his breakthrough in acting as “Kristoff” in the top-rating Kapamilya teleserye “Kadenang Ginto.”

The StarPOP artist, who joined “The Voice Kids” in 2015, is now one of the Kapamilya artists bridging the gap between the local and international music scene as ABS-CBN continues its campaign to introduce the talent of Filipinos to the world stage.

Listen to Kyle and Haven’s song “Imagine” on digital streaming services and check out its music video on MYX and Star Music’s YouTube channel. For more details, like StarPOP PH on facebook.com/starpopph, and follow it on and Instagram @starpopph.

BDO Foundation teaches financial education to kids through storytelling

Saving money is one of the most important aspects in our life. Teaching kids how to save money may seem like a tough task. How can you make your child’s understanding of money fun and accessible? It’s an investment in knowledge which truly pays the best interest.

There are ways to empower the next generation, and that starts by teaching children the importance of saving from a young age.

A boy who succeeds in getting his dream toy, an enterprising high school student who uses her creativity to earn income, and a modified version of a well-loved folk song—these are just some of the content used to teach youngsters the value of saving money and preparing for the future.

Gandang Girlie Video - “Ganda ni Girlie,” describes how a high school student’s resourcefulness and creativity help her earn income even in her youth.

The materials, which come in the form of videos, are part of the training tools developed by BDO Foundation, the Department of Education (DepEd) and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to promote financial education among public school students from kindergarten all the way to senior high school,

Savings from her earnings

“Young people are into watching videos. We thought it would be best to come up with financial literacy videos that would not just entice, but more importantly, educate them,” said BDO Foundation president Mario Deriquito.

He also said the strategy to leverage storytelling and music was meant to provide entertainment while educating children on the very important subject of personal finance.

“The beauty of stories and songs is that they are easy to remember. Kids appreciate the materials better because they can easily imagine being the characters in the stories. This makes the materials so powerful in teaching and inspiring,” Deriquito continued.

Finishing touches for her springless notebook business

Five financial education videos for students have been released to date. These aim to catch students’ attention and enable them to learn about the value of money at the same time.

The said tools, developed by BDO Foundation in partnership with DepEd and BSP, were deployed to public schools nationwide by virtue of DepEd Memo No. 32, series of 2019, signed by DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones.

Newspaper fund drive from her neighbors & sells it to nearby junkshops

The videos include “Walk Hard for the Money,” which tells of an elementary school boy who chooses to walk to school instead of commuting despite being given allowance. Along with other money-making efforts, these eventually pay off, allowing him to buy an electric scooter, which he later rides to school.

Another video, “Bente Bente,” conveys the same message to young school children to the tune of “Tong Tong Pakitong-kitong.”

Inspired by the Filipino folk song Magtanim ay Di Biro, “Umutang ay Di Biro” also uses music to tell older students to save their allowance, limit spending and pay debts on time.

Ice Candy business during weekends

“Ganda ni Girlie,” meanwhile, describes how a high school student’s resourcefulness and creativity help her earn income even in her youth.

“Save to Have a Million: Junior Edition” discusses the right attitudes in handling money through a game show.

Other than the videos for the students, the financial literacy learning tools also include lesson plans, discussion guides, and financial education videos for teachers and non-teaching personnel.

“It is very important that the students start the habit of saving while they’re young,” Deriquito emphasized.

“This is our strategy for greater financial inclusion among Filipinos in the long run.”

A survey conducted by global financial services firm Standard & Poor’s revealed that only 25% of Filipino adults are financially literate. This is lower than the global average of 33%.

“We hope that the videos encourage the students not just to live for the moment, but prepare for their future by saving and spending wisely now,” Deriquito added.

BDO Foundation will be developing more financial education materials together with DepEd and BSP in the future.

The foundation also has financial education programs for overseas Filipino workers and their families, army personnel and their families, and small farmers. Its programs will further be discussed in a web series on YouTube.

BDO Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank.
