A gift that grows a lifetime: Teach your kids financial freedom this Christmas

CHRISTMAS is a season for giving, and every parent wants to make it magical for their kids. This year, instead of gifting them with toys or gadgets that could bring momentary joy, why not give them something that will last a lifetime?

Teach your kids financial freedom this Christmas - - - Christine Caberte

Safer than a piggy bank

For Christine Caberte, nothing makes a mother prouder than seeing her kid disciplined with money, even at a young age. Christine just opened a bank account for her six-year-old son.

"I've seen my son save money in his piggy bank for some time, but I wanted something more secure. That's why I decided to open a BDO Junior Savers account for him," Christine explains. "With a bank, I know his money is intact and safe, unlike an alkansya that can be opened anytime."

Securing her son’s future. Christine Caberte knows the importance of establishing a foundation for financial independence for her son by opening a BDO Junior Savers account for him during the BDO Fiesta in Bacolod.

Christine, a former overseas Filipino planning to return to work abroad, feels peace of mind knowing that when she starts sending remittances to her son's account, his savings will grow securely.

"It’s comforting to know he now has a bank account that’s his alone,” she shares. “I can send money for his daily expenses and savings separately. His Junior Savers account is safe, nobody can touch it; it’s his to grow."

Starting 'em young

Parents like Christine can easily open a Junior Savers account at any nearby branch, starting from their child's birth. As the deposit reaches P2,000, it will earn interest and Rewards Peso Points.

It comes with a Special Design Passbook as an additional means to monitor a child’s savings. When the kid turns seven, he or she will receive a Junior Savers Debit card.

This Christmas, secure your children’s future by opening a BDO Junior Savers account. It's more than a bank account; it's a foundation for teaching them financial independence and responsibility.

With an initial deposit of only P100, Junior Savers helps kids develop a habit of saving and teaches them to handle their own money at a young age. It is affordable and ideal for most families who want to nurture sound financial habits.

Imagine your kids saving the aguinaldo they will receive this Christmas. Instead of spending money on new toys or gadgets, they can deposit it into their Junior Savers account. As they watch their savings grow, they will learn that achieving their life goals starts with discipline, patience, and a commitment to saving.

BDO and SM elevate the shopping experience for OF families w/ Kabayan Tuesday

Papa P at SM City Caloocan for Kabayan Tuesday. Award-winning actor and BDO Remit brand ambassador Piolo Pascual mingles with overseas Filipino families during the formal launch of Kabayan Tuesday at SM City Caloocan last June 4.

For countless overseas Filipino families, SM is more than just a mall—it's a hub for shopping, bonding, and essential errands. Recognizing this, BDO Unibank has teamed up with SM to enhance these experiences through the innovative Kabayan Tuesday initiative.

“For the last 20 years, BDO and SM have been collaborating to teach overseas Filipinos and their families about saving and financial management through lively financial literacy seminars, complete with celebrities, games, and freebies at various SM malls," said Genie T. Gloria, BDO Senior Vice President and Head of Remittance. “Starting in 2024, we wanted to make their essential shopping even more rewarding by leveraging their Kabayan Savings. With Kabayan Tuesday, their trips to SM can now be not just fulfilling but also economical.”

Kabayan Tuesday: Exclusive savings and perks

Available every first Tuesday of the month, Kabayan Tuesday is BDO’s special way of thanking overseas Filipino families for their loyalty. By presenting their Kabayan Savings ATM card, passbook, or BDO remittance payment slip at any SM branch nationwide, customers can enjoy up to a 10% discount at popular SM stores including The SM Store, SM Appliance, Watsons, Miniso, Toy Kingdom, Surplus, Baby Company, Sports Central, ACE Hardware, SM Cinema, SM Game Park, SM Bowling, and SM Skating.

This exciting promo, which began on January 2, was officially celebrated on June 4 at the newly opened SM City Caloocan with a vibrant Kabayan Tuesday Mall Show featuring BDO Remit brand ambassador Piolo Pascual.

SM City Caloocan opened its doors to the public on May 17, offering a fresh destination for families. “With the opening of SM Caloocan, we saw an opportunity to hold our Kabayan Tuesday event here, knowing it’s a favored spot for overseas Filipinos and their families,” said Gloria.

The collaboration with SM has significantly boosted the number of Kabayan Savings account holders, and there's more to come. “We are continually adding more partners to provide discounts,” Gloria added.

More than just shopping discounts

Jonjon San Agustin, Senior Vice President for Marketing of SM Supermalls, emphasized the broader benefits. “Kabayan Tuesday is just one of the many rewarding experiences at SM. Customers can also take advantage of other promotions and additional discounts across departments.”

Even those without a Kabayan Savings account can enjoy Kabayan Tuesday discounts through Cash Pick-up of remittances at BDO Remit counters inside SM Stores, SM Supermarket, and Save More. “Claim your remittance, present the slip at the cashier, and enjoy the discounts,” explained Gloria.

Building a secure financial future

Gloria also highlighted the long-term benefits of having a Kabayan Savings account. “Regular use of a Kabayan account for remittances builds a solid banking record, which is beneficial for future loan or credit card applications. A good relationship with a formal financial institution like BDO is invaluable.”

Bank savings are also safer, being regulated by the Bangko Sentral and insured by the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. “Saving in banks means overseas Filipinos’ hard-earned money is more secure,” Gloria stressed. “That’s why they trust banks more.”

With Kabayan Tuesday, BDO and SM are not just offering discounts—they’re providing overseas Filipino families with more value, security, and a reason to celebrate each month.

5 Easy Tips Para Mapalago Ang Iyong Ipon

3. Mamuhay ayon sa iyong kinikita

Always aim to live within your means.

4. Simulan mag-ipon ngayon and make it a habit

Iwasan gastusin lahat ng bonus o kita, at maging one-day millionaire.

          a. Ito ba talaga ang kailangan kong halaga?

          b. Kaya ko ba ito bayaran on time?

Kung binabayaran mo ang loan mo on time, mas madaling makapag-loan ulit in the future.

BDO Foundation rehabs 6 health centers

After reaching a major milestone last year with the rehabilitation of 100 rural health units, BDO Foundation continues to help improve health facilities across the country. The corporate social responsibility arm of BDO Unibank recently completed the rehabilitation of six rural health units as part of its contribution to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal no. 3 to ensure healthy lives and promote the well-being of all people of all ages.

As part of continuing efforts to help improve the healthcare delivery system in the Philippines, BDO Foundation rehabilitated six rural health units in Iloilo, Isabela, and Western Samar with the support of officers from BDO and BDO Network Bank branches.

Despite constraints caused by the pandemic, the foundation renovated the Municipal Health Office of Aurora in Isabela, Calbiga Rural Health Unit and Birthing Facility in Western Samar, and Rural Health Unit Dapa in Siargao, Surigao del Norte. In Iloilo, it renovated Dueñas Municipal Health Office, Barotac Viejo Municipal Health Office, and Birthing Facility, and Mina Municipal Health Center.

According to Dueñas municipal health officer Dr. Rodney Labis, “Understanding the financial capacity of our local government unit, I knew that our only chance to renovate Dueñas Municipal Health Office would be through BDO Foundation. Learning that the foundation will rehabilitate our building made me hopeful. Our staff was also excited because they have seen the foundation’s work in other rural health units in Iloilo.”

“The rehabilitation of our rural health unit not only made our building presentable, but it also motivated our health workers to deliver services effectively to all Dueñasanons especially during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the doctor added.

BDO Foundation improved the layout and interior design of the six health centers, their lobby and waiting areas, offices, clinics, consultation rooms, treatment rooms, and facilities. The foundation installed new furniture and fixtures to help health workers accommodate more patients. It also constructed play areas where children can read books or play with toys. In Mina Municipal Health Center and Rural Health Unit Dapa, available space enabled BDO Foundation to build waiting areas for the comfortable use of senior citizens.

With these improvements in place, the doctors, nurses, and midwives of the rural health units in Aurora, Barotac Viejo, Calbiga, Dapa, Dueñas, and Mina are now better equipped to provide primary healthcare services to thousands of constituents. BDO Foundation’s corporate citizenship initiatives in the aforementioned municipalities are expected to help improve the health and well-being of more than 197,000 people from 198 barangays.

BDO posts P28.2 billion net income in 2020

BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) posted a net income of P28.2 billion in 2020 from P44.2 billion in 2019, due mainly to pre-emptive provisions of P30.2 billion set aside against potential delinquencies from the pandemic. The Bank relied on its strong and resilient business franchise and balance sheet to support core business operations, despite significant hurdles from the pandemic and ensuing economic lockdown.

Net interest income (NII) grew by 12 percent to P133.7 billion.  Loans managed to grow 3 per cent to P2.3 trillion driven by consumer and corporate accounts.  The Bank continued to assist its borrowing clients, ensuring their uninterrupted access to credit facilities, in addition to granting loan moratoria under Bayanihan I and II.

CASA deposits continued to climb, growing 17 percent to P2.1 trillion, as clients were able to access BDO products and services through its branches, ATMs and digital channels even during quarantine restrictions.

Non-interest income declined 8 percent and settled at P55.2 billion, supported by fee-based income, trading gains and insurance premiums.  Business volumes were initially impacted by mobility restrictions, but have since begun to recover gradually.  Wealth management, on the other hand, remained resilient with trust volumes and fees sustaining growth.  Trading gains increased as the Bank capitalized on favorable market conditions while insurance premiums grew modestly despite the initial impact of the lockdowns.

Operating expenses decreased 2 percent to P112.6 billion due to a reduction in marketing and volume-related expenses.

The Bank’s provisions of P30.2 billion were in line with prudent credit and provisioning policies, meant to further strengthen its balance sheet.  The NPL ratio stood at 2.65 percent with NPL coverage at 109.5 percent. As of yearend, the Bank’s total Loan Loss Reserves were equivalent to 3 percent of Gross Customer Loans, and are considered more than sufficient to cover for potential losses.

The Bank’s capital base expanded to P393 billion with its Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) at 14.4 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively, comfortably above minimum regulatory levels.   The Bank’s capital increased by 6% despite the pre-emptive provisions and the business impact of COVID-19. Book value per share likewise increased 6% to P88.11 from P83.03 in 2019.

BDO remains cautiously optimistic on a gradual upturn in 2021. With its extensive market reach and devoted workforce, the Bank remains committed to providing banking products and services attuned to its customers needs. These include digital upgrades that allow easier and safer access to services, such as QR code-based ATM and merchant transactions. These are part of the benefits expected from its ongoing Next Generation IT upgrade.

With BDO Foundation and Go Negosyo, Makati pooled PCR testing this month

Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship and Go Negosyo Founder Joey Concepcion announces that the city of Makati led by Mayor Abigail Binay will pilot the Go Negosyo’s pooled PCR testing this month. ARK PCR Chief Private Implementor Cong. Janette Garin, Tessie Sy-Coson, Chairwoman of BDO Unibank, Philippine Children’s Medical Center’s Dr. Julius Lecciones, and Dr. Raymond Lo were also present during the virtual MOA signing.

“The private sector will fund a pooled PCR testing pilot for 16 cities and one municipality in NCR this month. That represents about P160,000 pooled PCR tests that will be done for this part of the research. This will be a game-changer for our country. It could speed up testing, increase the capacity, and make it cheaper. Testing will create greater visibility,” said Concepcion.

Concepcion also highlighted the significance of the partnership between the private sector and the local government units in winning the war against COVID-19 and thanked both BDO and Makati for their participation.
“We are making the best out of this two-weeks. The challenge is how to co-exist with COVID-19. The objective is to save lives, jobs, and livelihoods. I’d like to thank Tessie for her untiring support. They have been supportive of every effort that is needed to help the health situation which is needed to help the economy. We cannot have a vibrant economy if we cannot control the health situation.”
“I’d like to thank PCE Go Negosyo, PSP, BDO Foundation, and PCMC. It is an honor that you chose Makati to do pooled testing. We are very honored to pilot pooled testing. Until we are able to get a vaccine, we will have to live with the virus,” Mayor Abby Binay said.

“Pooled testing will be helpful not just to our constituents but also to our business community who are unable to afford the P3500 PCR test. Hopefully, this will encourage our companies to open up, our employees will be assured that they are not spreading the virus as well. Hopefully eto na po ang sagot na hinihintay nating lahat so we can all move forward, living with COVID.”

As the country’s business capital, Makati is one of the cities in NCR to pilot Go Negosyo’s pooled PCR testing for 10,000 individuals. The pilot will focus on public market vendors as well as tricycle, jeepney, and pedicab drivers, in addition to a community near Makati Coliseum. The city also pledges to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 through massive targeted testing. The data and results that will be gathered during the tests will then be used as a guide in policy-making, program formulation in line with the LGU’s COVID-19 response.

One of the staunch supporters of Go Negosyo programs and big brother BDO Foundation led by Tessie Sy-Coson expressed her belief in the pooled testing program, “We always believe in this pooled testing program which is initiated by Go Negosyo under Joey Concepcion and Cong. Janette Garin. As a matter of fact, Nestor and I have been talking about it. When we learn that Mayor Abby Binay is going to start this program, we were excited to involve BDO to work along in this worthy program and I’m happy to know that we will be working together.”

“It’s very difficult to be in a pandemic. But what inspires everybody, especially the health workers, is that when the private sector and government come together… Pooled testing does not only deal with a drastically reduced price, but it also deals with protecting our healthcare workers, hastening the turn around time and making our laboratories the windows that can open and guide us where these viruses are. Go Negosyo and the partnership with BDO has made possible for us the circle with the entry of the city of Makati,” said Garin.

She also added that the desire of the city of Makati, BDO Foundation and Go Negosyo is not only to make testing affordable, “Basically it boils down to how we can put back confidence in the workplaces. We look forward that the outcome of this pilot implementation of pooled testing will be the replica that will be cascaded to all other LGUs where government, private sector, and LGU will become enlightened in crushing COVID and allowing us to co-exist with it.”

Pooled PCR testing is expected to optimize the availability of test kits, reduce the workload of laboratory staff, eliminates large groups of negative cases, makes PCR testing more affordable and available, provides LGUs and businesses with a better and clearer direction, and restores confidence in returning to work while sustaining the gains of the initial lockdown.

Garin explained that a proposed costing mechanism has already been developed which will bring down the cost of testing to PHP450 per person in pools of 5s; PHP350 per person in pools of 10s, and PHP250 per person in pools of 20s, inclusive of PHP150 swabbing fee with VTM. If the study is approved by the Department of Health, pooled testing can be piloted in 21 implementation sites namely 11 Go Negosyo supported laboratories and 5 each from San Miguel Foundation and Ayala Foundation.

“I’m glad that we will be able to sign this MOA today. This will pave the way and accelerate all the things that we were talking about. The real challenge is how to put that into action. Today we will be doing that. Tomorrow and the next days to come, we commit to ourselves to show to everyone that this is the way to go. Our commitment and our dedication to this enterprise is something …. [that] you can be proud of,” Dr. Lecciones shared.

Dr. Lo, who is leading the PCMC COVID-19 Laboratory, also shared, “Our research is proceeding as we speak. Now, we’re beginning to test them with the pooling method. Initially, we will be testing them individually to establish a baseline and then we will do pooling so we can see… which pools of 5, 10, or 20 [is most effective]. That will be a function of the prevalence of the virus. We are going to be testing asymptomatic. We don't expect that many [asymptomatics] in the community but we do hope to catch them before they can spread the virus.”

Lo added that the first phase of the research shows promise for pools of 5 and 10 and that the second phase is ongoing. The second phase will focus on cascading further protocols that other labs, especially those under the Go Negosyo mantle, can adapt.
