‘Call Me Maybe’ is the Biggest Hit of 2012!

US President Barrack Obama, Manny Pacquiao, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, TheAbercrombie & Fitch models, Preview Girls: Solenn Heusaff, Anne Curtis, Georgina Wilson, Liz Uy, Isabelle Daza, Raymond Gutierrez, Jamich, PBB Teens, LuvU Barkada, and the UAAP Season 75 — What do they possibly all have in common? — A music video dancing and/or lip synching to Carly Rae Jepsen’s highly infectious tune, “Call Me Maybe”. If you haven’t heard this song yet then perhaps you’ve been living under a rock!

Canadian singer/songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen rose to fame with her single, “Call Me Maybe”, claiming the No. 1 spot in the Digital Chart — the first song by a Canadian artist to reach the top of the digital chart since Justin Bieber’s “Baby” in January 2010. It also recently hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and her landing in the cover of Billboard magazine last June 10, 2012 naming “Call Me Maybe” the song of the summer and the new sound of top 40.

“Call Me Maybe” has sold over 3.2 million singles and spent four consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart. Certified quintuple-platinum in Carly Rae Jepsen’s native Canada (where it hit No. 1), the track is also an international sensation, climbing to No. 1 in the iTunes Singles charts in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway and more. Moreover, it has also dominated Philippine charts, reaching No. 1 in local radio stations such as Magic 89.9, Love Radio 90.7, Big 91.5, RX 93.1, 93.9 i-FM, Mellow 94.7, 95.5 Pinas FM, 97.1, LS FM, 97.9 Home, 99.5 RT, 101.1 Yes FM, Tambayan 101.9, 102.7 Star, Wow 103.5, Energy 106.7 and Win 107.5 among others.
The irresistibly catchy song’s ascent is fueled in part by its videos. The official video has racked up more than 105 million views on VEVO, while an unofficial clip — which Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and other young stars filmed of themselves lip-synching and dancing to the song and posted on Big Time Rush actor and singer Carlos Pena’s YouTube Channel. It has attracted more than 42 million views and has inspired other stars get in on the action. Katy Perry, actor James Franco, the Harvard Baseball team, SMU Women’s Rowing team and more have all posted their own versions of “Call Me Maybe.” Joining in the fun is a parody of US President Barrack Obama’s speech which was cleverly edited to look as though he’s singing the song. At the same time, the video gimmick was picked up locally when Manila’s ‘IT Girl’ Solenn Heusaff also lip dubbed the song with friends Raymond Gutierrez, Liz Uy and Anne Curtis among others, making the video go viral online.
Carly Rae Jepsen may seem like a newcomer in the music biz but she has already scored two previous gold singles and received numerous awards, including 2010 Juno Award nominations for “Songwriter of the Year” and “Best New Artist” as well as a 2010 MuchMusic Video Award nomination for “UR Fave New Artist.” She has sold more than 400,000 singles in her home country. She is set to release her debut album this September. With all these accolades, indeed, “Call Me Maybe” deserves to be hailed as the BIGGEST HIT of 2012.

Also, a new single from Owl City entitled “Good Time” features Carly Rae Jepsen, will be released in the UK on September 9. Its music video already hit 4,350,462 as of this writing since it was uploaded last July 24 at YouTube. You can pre-order the new single from ITunes here.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s debut album will soon be available in CDs exclusively under MCA Music. Her mega hit single “Call Me Maybe” may already be downloaded at www.MyMusicStore.com.ph

Asians at risk of blindness: Glaucoma and race

Asian countries, which are a ménage of diverse cultures, races and rich history, have a common dreadful trait – the existence of the incurable glaucoma.

“Among races, Asians are probably the most exposed to glaucoma. Because Asians have a narrower fluid drainage system, many major studies on the disease shows higher incidences of angle closure glaucoma – the deadlier type of glaucoma – on Asians,” said Dr. Biboy Martinez, vice-president of the Philippine Glaucoma Society, the recognized association of glaucoma specialists in the country.

Asians have an anatomic predisposition to Angle closure glaucoma. Fluid produced inside the eye passes thru a drainage channel. In Asians the entrance to this drainage channel tends to be narrower and can close altogether causing a sharp increase in pressure. High eye pressure damages the optic nerve initiating glaucoma damage which can lead to blindness.

In a study by Quigley et al, by the year 2020 an estimated 21 million people will have Angle Closure Glaucoma, 87% of which will reside in Asia. A local study by Dr. Patricia Khu et al in 2001 conducted in 2 eye centers in Manila showed that Angle closure Glaucoma patients present with more severe visual damage, higher pressures and requires more interventional measures compared to filipinos with open angle glaucoma.

The most common types of glaucoma are Primary open-angle glaucoma and Primary angle closure glaucoma. Open angle glaucoma is the more common type in Caucasians and Europeans. There is a high prevalence of both glaucoma types in Asians so by ethnicity we carry a greater burden of glaucoma in this part of the world.

Angle Closure Glaucoma, which is considered deadlier, progresses quickly and painfully. It is a major cause of world blindness today and is expected to become an even more serious problem as the world population and life span increases.

Symptoms of Angle Closure Glaucoma can include headaches, eye pain, nausea, rainbows around lights and blurred vision. These symptoms may not be present in all cases. An eye doctor can view the drainage channels of the eye thru a contact lens and a microscope. This procedure called gonioscopy can help the eye doctor assess your risk for developing angle closure. If the angle is judged to be capable of closure a laser procedure (iridotomy) can modify the angle configuration and effectively decrease the risk of closure.

“It is still best to visit your eye doctor for early detection. Our ethnicity makes us more at risk for blindness from angle closure glaucoma. Filipinos should be very wary of this,” added Dr. Biboy Martinez.

Philippine Glaucoma Society is the leading institution for glaucoma care and detection in the country. It vision can be summarized in nine words: That no Filipino will ever go blind from Glaucoma.

Philippine Glaucoma Society along with globally recognized multi-specialty care company Allergan brings scientific excellence and rigor in delivering leading products that addresses glaucoma. Allergan goes beyond providing education and information. With the highest level of integrity, Allergan helps patients understand the choices available to them and make well-informed treatment decisions with their doctors.

As the world’s melting pot of the richest cultures, Asia’s fight against incurable blindness will bring to light a better and brighter tomorrow for its people.
