The first of five Dreamliner aircraft on order for Royal Brunei features the quiet state of the art cabins with large windows that enable passengers to tint the windows by the touch of a button.

Operated by Royal Brunei, the 787-8 Dreamliner is configured with 18 seats in business class and 236 economy seats. The aircraft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines and is considered one of the most fuel efficient aircraft operating in the world today with airlines realising savings of up to twenty percent over older generation aircraft.

The aircraft was welcomed to Manila by Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions that managed the ground services of the Dreamliner towing the aircraft to Bay 7 at NAIA Terminal 1.

It took ground staff approximately six minutes to connect the aircraft to the aerobridge. Passengers on board the flight stated that the aircraft was "exciting, beautiful, very comfortable and that the food was great."

DepEd completes the initial batch of school buildings under public-private partnerships

The Department of Education (DepEd) accepted around 500 classrooms constructed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for School Infrastructure Project Phase 1 (PSIP 1) for Regions 3 and 4A. PSIP 1 aims to supplement the DepEd’s efforts to address classroom needs.

The turnover ceremony was held at the San Jose del Monte National Trade School, Bulacan last October 25, 2013.

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC said the partial turnover of completed classrooms is part of the continuing effort to steadily close the gap of the 66,800 classroom backlog.
“With the help of the private sector we are confident that we can deliver our commitment to public school students,” Luistro said.

Luistro added that this is the first successful public-private partnership project in the country. PSIP enables the government to fast-track the construction and delivery of classrooms within the fiscal ceiling and improve and introduce innovations in the design, methods, and materials for classroom construction.

The over 120 units of one- and two-storey school buildings were completed by one of the winning contractors – Megawide Construction Corporation and turned over in a ceremony at the San Jose del Monte National Trade School attended by delegations from the recipient schools on Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bataan, and Bulacan.
DepEd awarded the first three contracts under the PSIP on October 2012 through the Build-Operate-Transfer Law.

PSIP involves the design, construction, maintenance, and financing of 9,303 classrooms equipped with school furniture, fixtures, and toilets for 2,204 public elementary and secondary schools in Regions 1, 3, and 4A over a 10-year case contract. The PSIP has a total approved budget of PhP 16.427 billion.

As a result of competitive bidding, the total contract price was PhP 16.28 billion. Two of the three contracts were awarded to Megawide Construction Corporation for Regions 3 and 4A. The other winning bidder is BF Construction Corporation for Region 1.

Under the Build-Transfer agreement, the two proponents have 16 months (from date of contract signing) to complete the construction and delivery of school facilities. The 10-year lease will commence from the completion of construction work. Periodic maintenance activities will be undertaken every 4.5 years from the start of the lease period.

14,000 jobs up for grabs in Canada

Thousands of jobs are waiting for Filipino workers in Canada. Among the jobs up for grabs are for engineers, architects, teachers, and healthcare professionals.

Filipinos can now land a job in Canada as Saskatchewan has opened 14,000 job opportunities in the province.

Applicants can go to saskjobs.ca to view the entire lists of occupations open for hiring.

DOLE said the job opportunities are not only for Filipinos because it is also open to all other workers of different nationalities.

According to Nicon Fameronag of the Department of Labor and Employment., Filipino workers are mostly preferred by Canadian employers.

The DOLE said accredited agencies will be tasked to screen applicants for the jobs.

The DOLE reiterated its warning to applicants to not fall prey to illegal recruiters. Instead, they should directly get in touch with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) at telephone numbers 722-1144 and 722-1155.

Earlier this month, DOLE signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Saskatchewan for the protection of Filipino workers and to implement streamlined, efficient and ethical recruitment practices in human resource between the Philippines and the Canadian province.
