World Vision launches response to Mindanao quake

Following the recent earthquakes in southern Mindanao, child-focused development and humanitarian agency World Vision launches its relief operations for the affected people of Northern Cotabato, including the city of Kidapawan and the hard-hit towns of Makilala and Tulunan.

“We are committed to support the government-led response in Mindanao. World Vision in the Philippines is particularly concerned for the well-being of children“, says World Vision’s National Director Rommel Fuerte.

In the morning of October 16, magnitude 6.3 earthquake of tectonic origin, hit the province of North Cotabato, with the epicenter located in the town of Tulunan. Days after, another quake of greater magnitude occurred from almost the same location. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 6.6-magnitude earthquake, followed by another equally strong quake on Oct. 31 at 6.5 magnitude with a shallow depth of 2kilometers which triggered more destruction and risk in the province.

Based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC, Nov 5), the series of earthquakes affected about 188,583 persons or 37,716 families in Regions XI and XII. Over 28,070 persons are currently taking shelter in 32 evacuation camps. Meanwhile, there are 1,493 more families being served outside of the evacuation centers.

“They are in a state of shock and as per report Cotabato is going to be more susceptible to aftershocks in the coming days. We are appealing to our partners and fellow Filipinos for support so that we can respond to the immediate needs of displaced children and their families. We can do more together”, added Fuerte.

A total of 1,075 schools were damaged, including about 26 totally damaged. According to the Department of Education, more than 3 million students are affected due to suspension of classes. Today, child-friendly spaces will be set up to provide psychosocial support to help children cope from the calamity, while temporary learning spaces will also be provided in coordination with the affected schools.

Complementing the government’s massive emergency operations in the province, World Vision complements and provides non-food items such as hygiene kits (bath and laundry soaps, toothbrushes and toothpastes, sanitary packs, nail cutter, undergarments and malong or tube skirt), jerry cans, non-food items (mosquito net, mats and blanket), emergency shelter kit (tarp and rope) among others.

Through the generous support of donors, World Vision aims to initially help 1,000 families or 5,000 individuals.

Cracking the Conventions of Creativity

The first step to creating art involves both the artist and their imagination. How to get to that end point, however, asks a more complex question: Does the imagination lead the artist to break new ground, or is the artist fueled to keep creating because of unbridled imagination?

While this delineation may forever be unanswered even to the artist himself, what remains clear is that it’s important to have a venue and a foundation to let imagination rise and run.

For three imaginative artists—Leeroy New, Ivan Roxas, and Ronald Ventura—they found this first seed to their blossoming art careers in that first competition win that changed the course of their journey in different ways.

A conduit for talent

Fifteen years since his first win at Shell’s National Students Art Competition, Leeroy New brought and reinvented the idea of mythology and madness to transform the Philippine art scene. Taking inspiration from folk tales and sci-fi, Leeroy transforms imagination and vividly recreates them right before your eyes.

Now, his newest venture aims to transform the world of artists, by providing a venue to channel the madness and creativity into a space where it can connect with the industry and the people.

Located in Poblacion, the heart of Makati’s art sector, Kondwi is Leeroy’s newest venture, a long-time passion project that has finally come to life.

“Kondwi is a combination of many different functions: a black box theater, bar and cafe, a retail space, and gallery,” says Leeroy. “It’s basically a creative space, one that’s so unpredictable, even we are not sure how it will turn out.”

Leeroy also considers it a lab where he can do projects that previously had no platform for them. Known for art that traverses thought and terrains, he recreates sinewy, scary, and surreal landscapes, which can be a nightmare or a dream depending on who views his work. Kondwi then acts almost like a conduit, not only for him and his team, but also for other creatives whose talent he wants to house in the space.

“I like collaborating with other specialists and creatives, especially those whom I admire and those who I know could lead to new work that I would not have thought of on my own,” Leeroy adds.

One inspiration for this space is the NSAC, which Leeroy describes as one of the support he was able to get so he could further his career as an art student. “It’s a major help at that point in any college art student’s career, when most are still figuring out what to do when they graduate,” muses Leeroy.

Imagination breeds imagination

Ivan Roxas

Few artists can make viewers and critics get lost in their work. Fewer still are those who manage to make people forget that they are looking at art rather than real life. In realist painter Ivan Roxas’s case, his works, some of which have ethereal beings, engage and challenge the viewer’s imagination, hoping for a glimpse of the story behind the captivating image.

As one who has never had a conventional path in the arts—taught by his brother at a young age, a full-time painter in his teens, and no one mentor as master—Ivan’s journey in the arts was fueled by one thing: his own imagination.

“The good thing about the arts is that it’s a craft where I don’t need to please anyone,” shares Ivan. “I don’t really need anyone else besides my canvas, colors, and brush.”

This conventional approach met its match when Ivan joined the NSAC in 1997. Here, he was confronted with the realities of what it meant to have criteria and standards for his creations, and what it meant for paintings to embody good values and positive messaging. There is a sense of merging of art as a medium and art as an outlet for the curious artist.

The experience taught him that being an artist means being a student for life. “I still consider myself as a student, and I think that’s for life. One lifetime is not enough for you to really know everything about the arts or your craft,” he muses.
As Ivan continues to discover just how far his imagination can take his works, the audience is kept captivated by the immortal and the usual depictions on his canvas, forever imagining the stories that can be told and retold by the strokes and colors of his art.

Breaking one’s own record

At the mention of “Grayground,” many art enthusiasts would perk up to visualize the hyperreal and surreal work that fetched Php47 million at the Sothebys Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings back in 2011.

While it has been eight years since he broke the record for the auction and almost three decades since his first prize win for the NSAC, Ronald Ventura has proven that he is far from being a one-hit wonder. If anything, the only thing he may want for is time; time to let his imagination out on the canvas, vision boards, and any available creative space possible.

Just recently, Ronald opened the Bobro’s World Tour Jakarta with a multi-sensorial experience. His exhibit was a space that deeply immerses the viewer in an environment of leisure and entertainment. His piece is an enclosed man cave, mounted within a golden dog sculpture. Inside is a sleek yellow and man cave, complete with a collection of shoes, the obligatory paintings, and a colorful graffitied karaoke booth.

A lot of the pieces have allusions to cartoons and pop culture, peppering the space in the same way that real life is bombarded with materialistic cues on end. Inspiration for his works, therefore, makes use of both imagination and the social reality that people live in. “When you are working, sometimes the concept just comes out. The creation of art is continuous, it’s unstoppable. There’s no definite process,” says Ronald.

Part of this indefinite process is finding inspiration in almost every aspect. Ronald took the 23rd NSAC prize for the oil and acrylic painting category. While he still uses oil and acrylic in a number of his works, it is undeniable that this first step he took in the competition has now broken out into a run, chasing after the many outlets that could bring life to his imagination.

The NSAC may be the first step towards achieving one’s dream in the arts. This is the reason why, even after more than 50 years, Shell continues to fuel artists’ imagination with this venue for creativity.

“The NSAC goes beyond tradition—we believe it is one way for art to continue thriving in the country,” says Cesar Romero, CEO and chairman of Pilipinas Shell. “The masters of today began as students and winners of yesteryears, and we look forward to establishing masters of tomorrow by fueling their imagination today.”

As past winners and now-masters of their own art have shown, the National Students Art Competition is a strong foundation on which one’s imagined dreams can become a reality.

PIA rallies PH youth to be responsible online users thru #cyberREADI

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – The Philippine Information Agency, the official information arm of the Republic of the Philippines, has taken huge strides to safeguard the youth against the dangers in the online world by aggressively pushing for the promotion of its nationwide cyber wellness campaign.

Nationwide cyber wellness campaign targeting the Filipino youth dubbed #cyberREADI stands for the five (5) ASEAN Core Values on Digital Literacy- Responsibility, Empathy, Authenticity, Discernment and Integrity.

This campaign is part of the ASEAN-Japan Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for the Youth Project which the PIA is spearheading in partnership with the InfoComm Media Development Authority of Singapore and with funding support from the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).

The campaign official logo and branding focused on #cyberREADI – with READI representing the five (5) ASEAN Core Values on Digital Literacy adopted by the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information in May 2018. These values served as a framework for the digital literacy programs in the region:

CORE VALUES DESCRIPTION

Responsibility  -  We should think first and be responsible for what we post online.

Empathy   -  We should be respectful and thoughtful of how our online interactions may affect others.

Authenticity  - We should be sincere in our online interactions and prepared to stand by what we post.

Discernment        - We should critically evaluate the online information before acting on it.

Integrity We should do the right thing, stand up for what is right and speak up against negative online behaviour.

After the logo and branding were launched, the PIA has released various multimedia materials and resources developed with the help of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication Foundation Inc. (UPCMCFI). These materials are products of an audience analysis on youth’s level of awareness regarding online safety, using focus group discussions conducted with Filipino youth representatives in different areas in the country.

Also greatly considered in the production of these materials were the insights on the changing media consumption habits of the youth and initiatives and best practices in promoting media and information literacy as discussed by speakers from the Philippines, Singapore, Japan, UNESCO, and Facebook and in group workshops by representatives from public information, media, academe, and youth sectors of the ten (10) ASEAN Member States during the ASEAN-Japan Forum on Media and Literacy: Cyber Wellness for the Youth on March 2018.

A dedicated webpage for the cyber wellness campaign is also in the works. PIA regional and provincial offices are rolling out their respective activities to further spread the cyberREADI advocacy.

H.E. Kung Phoak, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community stressed that the Cyber-Wellness campaign is a timely project since digital media has increasingly become the primary source of information among ASEAN people. He says: “There is a need to build information resiliency among the youth and protect them from the risk of getting misled by fake news and misinformation. With enhanced media and information literacy, the youth is expected to become smart consumers and responsible producers of online information. Through this project, we hope young people would better understand, inquire, create, communicate and think critically while digitally engaged”.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan’s Myko Manago releases his first digital single, STUCK.

Myko Mañago is a jaw-dropping vocal sensation. Myko’s vocal performance is captivating to the soul and soothing to the heart. A three-time defending champion of ABS-CBN’s highly rated Tawag Ng Tanghalan show (an amateur singing competition in the Philippines that airs daily in Its Showtime), he easily became a household favorite in every Filipino home both in the Philippines and abroad. A gifted singer since childhood, Myko cites the Filipino Pop and R&B band, South Border, as his major influence. His musical influence also includes Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Sam Smith, and Michael Buble.

San Francisco, CA Executive Producer Discovers the Golden Voice

In between TV and radio appearances, Myko also produces his own YouTube vlogs by singing internationally inspired Pop and R&B musical covers and posts them on his personal channel.

As fate has it, these YouTube videos caught the attention of SF based RJA Productions LLC, and immediately called their local team in the Philippines to get in touch with the hottest new singing sensation. To the words of CEO Rosabella Jao-Arribas:

“Myko has a golden voice… it’s very, very soothing… gave me goosebumps when I first heard him sing. I just knew I found a real gem. The world needs to applaud such talent.”

Myko Launches His First Digital Single, “Stuck”

In search for his debut album’s carrier song, RJA Productions LLC chanced upon an incredible song called “Stuck” from Robster Evangelista, a famous young composer who has a string of hit songs under his sleeve. Arranged by seasoned guitarist and musical director Jun “JT” Tamayo and produced by veteran label executive Reck Cardinales, “Stuck” got its final nod for its commercial release just recently. The music video is now also available in YouTube.

“Stuck” is a nice, easy-listening type of song reminiscent of the coolness of Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are”.  It is about how true love works in mysterious ways, leading you to someone who is destined for you… with whom you will be happily “stuck” with for the rest of your life. If you are one of those people who’s having a hard time expressing your true feelings, this song will resonate with you! This is the best song to get “stuck” with…especially on a traffic jam!  Your destiny might be listening to the same song, somehow, somewhere!

Stuck is published by RJA Productions LLC and  distributed in all digital platforms by Curve Entertainment.

A Regular Guy with an Extraordinary Voice and Dream

Just like anyone else, Myko enjoys various sports including badminton, swimming, basketball, and volleyball. He also loves eSports using Moba games, first person shooting games, and MMORPG games.

He grew up with very supportive parents. His Dad is from Iloilo and his Mom is from his current hometown, Cavite City. He grew up loving music and started to explore his newfound love for singing at an early age of 9.

His jaw-dropping performance at ABS-CBN’s Tawag Ng Tanghalan show is not his only celebrity stint. He also starred in the following TV and radio appearances:

Diz Iz It daily contestant - singing competition (GMA 7)
Wowowin Wil to Win - semi-finalist (GMA 7)
Unang Hirit - viral guest performer of the day segment (GMA 7)
Tee Radio Station - online radio guest

Myko dreams to become a global sensation someday. With his incredible talent, perseverance, and the support of many people - this dream is definitely not that far off… especially with an extraordinary voice like his. As one would say, “It’s just a matter of time…” Looks like we are (gladly) “stuck” with this hottest new Pop and R&B singer from Cavite City. We can’t seem to have enough of his golden voice!
