Trailblazer in Philippine Retail Industry

In just a matter of two (2) years from the time MR. D.I.Y. opened its first store in the country, this retailer has managed to grow and expand to 100 stores nationwide.  This, despite the current challenges brought about by the pandemic.

Celebrating with a Purpose

As the country tries to rise above the economic, health and safety challenges brought about by the pandemic, MR.D.I.Y. celebrated its milestone – 100 stores in the Philippines, with a purpose. The brand extended its celebration not only within the organization but more so with its valued customers and the community.

The month-long celebration started with a consumer promotion: Spend & Win iPhone 12 Pro contest. Three winners of the brand-new iPhone 12 Pro (128 GB) and 10 consolation winners of MR.D.I.Y. cash vouchers were announced last January 14, 2021. The promotion was done to express MR D.I.Y.’s gratitude to all its loyal customers.

A virtual press launch was held last January 29. In the keynote presentation, Ms. Roselle Marisol Andaya, MR.D.I.Y. Philippines Chief Operating Officer (COO) said that “from the time we opened our first store barely two and half years ago, we have achieved countless milestones, all of which we are very proud of.  From opening stores in various locations to providing thousands of jobs, from offering Filipino families practical and essential products to caring for the environment, we have pushed ourselves to go beyond our limits. And today is a celebration of this.”

During the live streaming event last January 30, Ms. Roselle emphasized the main reason for the celebration.  She expressed her gratitude as she shared these words “Thank you to our valued customers. You have been our inspiration and reason to continue to strive to become the largest life and home improvement store here in the country as well as in Asia.  We have achieved so much because we have all of you with us.  If not for all of you, we would not be here.”

Giving Back to the Community

In partnership with ABS CBN Foundation Inc. Bantay Kalikasan for the benefit of La Mesa Watershed and Ecopark, MR.D.I.Y. launched The Good Bag campaign, a sustainability program for the environment, where reusable eco-bags were sold in all of its stores and the sales proceeds amounting to Php375,074 was turned over to the foundation last January 8, 2021. Additionally, the company adopted 100 trees planted in the La Mesa Watershed.

Prior to this, the company gifted frontliners such as teachers, nurses and security officers with MR. D.I.Y. packages to help them and their families celebrate the holidays.  These brave and selfless frontliners also inspired the Christmas web film launched last December.

All these initiatives including the virtual store tour of the 100th store was encapsulated in the live streaming celebration last January 30 and ended with an exciting online raffle for all the online viewers.

How 5G technology could help one’s everyday life

Globe’s nationwide rollout of 5G technology is set to impact Filipinos’ lives in more ways than one.  This next-generation network is causing a ripple of developments that can help consumers keep in step with today’s fast-paced life.

Much like how the MIT Technology Review once described 5G as a “technological paradigm shift, similar to the shift from typewriter to computer,” Globe will help usher in a new era of connectivity that will help Filipinos discover and enjoy new ways to connect, watch, play and so much more.

Globe 5G is up to 20x faster than LTE, with fiber-fast speeds of up to 100 Mbps. It has an almost real-time latency allowing faster response time needed for new technologies.

"With 5G technology, our customers are given more ways to elevate their mobile and data experiences. 5G will be the next step in helping Filipinos cope with the challenges of the new normal,” said Coco Domingo, Globe VP for Postpaid and International Business.

Here are some exciting examples of how 5G can help consumers with their daily lives.

Seamless Video Calls

5G technology is all about speed.  This means conference calls with no lag, crystal-clear audio and sharp video resolution. So whether a friend, family member or colleague is just right around the block or in another continent, 5G technology will let consumers connect with them clearly, so they can say goodbye to glitch catch-ups or conference calls.

Next-level Gaming

Mobile gaming already has a huge global market and in the Philippines, mobile is the gaming platform of choice for most Filipinos. Seventy-four percent of Filipinos online play games on mobile. Gamers will be thrilled to find out that 5G can take their experience to new heights, with better-looking graphics and lightning-fast, stable connections that would allow multiplayer games to be played seamlessly on mobile devices. 5G will also complement games played in newer forms such as Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technology.

High-quality Streaming

Streaming services have become a very popular mode of entertainment in the Philippines. And in today’s landscape where the health crisis has shut down most cinemas because of the pandemic, staying at home and binge-watching movies and TV series on Netflix and Amazon Prime, for example, is the next best thing. And as streaming services take hold of the entertainment space, so does the demand for high-quality online streaming and Globe’s 5G services provide just that. With the improved bandwidth and faster service, customers can have access to a stable connection that makes sure that their viewing experience is not hampered by sudden glitches and untimely buffering. So they can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Self-driving cars, robotics

5G technology will be able to bring the Internet of Things (IoT) into the way we travel like having self-driving cars in the next few years.  5G will usher in a new era in robotics as the technology brings more convenience in everyday living.

Globe continues to be at the forefront of the mobile revolution. Apart from being the very first telecommunications company to launch 5G for broadband in Southeast Asia back in 2019, it also introduced the first 5G service for mobile and the first 5G device in the country last year.

Globe has not rested on its laurels.  The company continues to upgrade its infrastructure to boost the connectivity and mobile experience of consumers as 5G technology becomes available in various areas around the country.

Globe’s network upgrades and expansion are also in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, UN SDG No. 9, which underscores the importance of infrastructure and innovation as significant drivers of economic growth and development. Globe has pledged to advocate the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.

Keep Your House In Perfect Order With With These Upgraded Home Appliances from Samsung

With more time spent inside the home nowadays, maintaining clean and orderly home spaces have become important. Most everyday activities are now done indoors, such as exercising and working. Having piles  of dirty clothes or a cluttered kitchen while on work or play can be distracting.

Additionally, hectic work-from-home schedules usually take time away from doing chores. By upgrading to more useful and trusted home appliances, however, maintaining cleanliness can be done efficiently. Achieve a house in perfect order with a few changes featuring some innovative appliances from Samsung Digital Appliances.

Cook in a kitchen equipped with the right refrigerator

In the kitchen, the refrigerator usually gets messy and cramped. With leftovers and stocked food stacking up inside as weeks pass, a bigger and a more organized space is definitely needed.

The French Door Refrigerator features a Food Showcase Door, which is “a fridge within a fridge” that allows for food to be organized efficiently. This feature also lets family members quickly find their favorite  food, drinks, or sauces.

And with its FlexZone feature, different food and drinks are stored at their optimal temperature, keeping them fresh and tasty longer. Its four pre-set temperature settings for fridge, chilling, soft freeze, and freezing, are ideal for preserving meat and fish, storing deli foods, chilling wine, and cooling beverages.

Relax in a cozy bedroom by routinely tidying up

Keeping the house in perfect order also includes the bedroom, where others spend most of their time. Having a cozy and tidy bedroom where people can lounge and sleep is very important.

To achieve this, one can routinely clean the room and allot a day to organize clutter that has accumulated throughout the week, to change sheets, or just to generally clean the room. It’s very easy to feel relaxed in a bedroom that feels cozy and comfortable. When a routine is in motion, this should be no problem.

Get thoroughly cleaned clothes using an efficient  washing machine

Each family member has clothes with different fabrics and colors that need to be cleaned in different ways at home, which makes laundry day a bit of a heavy chore.

With Samsung’s Washer Dryer Combo, the work will definitely be a lot lighter. Its AirWash  technology deodorizes and sanitizes not only clothes but also linens, so they always smell fresh. Using just super-hot air, unpleasant odors, bacteria, and allergens are removed without boiling or using chemicals, making it great at intensive stain removal.

On the other hand, its Bubble Soak technology thoroughly soaks clothes in bubbles, so even a variety of stubborn stains are loosened and removed effectively.

Perfectly sanitized and cleaned clothes will definitely add to the whole order of a home.

Little upgrades, such as getting a routine in place, are equally important as investing in trusty new appliances; these will surely keep a house in perfect order. As more and more time is spent at home, a change here and there will create significant differences.

With Samsung Home Upgrade Deals, enjoy a safer and healthier space for the year ahead with up to 25% on selected appliances. Promo runs until March 31, 2021. Globe paves way for Our Lady of Manaoag devotees to continue pilgrimage, business online

The Our Lady of Manaoag church in Pangasinan has welcomed hundreds of thousands of devotees. As the pandemic restricted movement decreasing the number of visitors on-site, Globe has paved the way for devotees and vendors in the area to continue their devotions and attend masses online, thanks to improved internet connectivity.

The telco continues to upgrade its sites and improve its network infrastructure to fulfill its commitment to have a 4G LTE, 5G-ready network.

“Nakakatulong -- malakas ang naitutulong ng cell site kasi kahit nasaan ka, pwede kang mag manood, mag-misa kahit saan). (It helps -- a cell site strongly helps because wherever you are, you may watch online masses anywhere),” said Dolores Villanueva, a Manaoag devotee and vendor, who is able to attend online masses even while watching over her shop.

Globe’s aggressive network expansion, which included the upgrading of 10,876 sites to 4G/LTE, has significantly improved the Philippines’ 4G experience even during peak hours. This was evident in a report of international mobile analytics firm Opensignal covering August to October 2020*, which showed the Globe network’s significant improvements in 4G Download Speeds, 4G Latency Experience and 4G Video Experience.

In terms of 4G Download Speeds, Opensignal found that Globe peaks at over 19 mbps with average 4G Download Speeds observed by users over the course of the day being more than sufficient for web browsing and apps usage. For Latency Experience, Globe is likewise inching closer to competition with its best score peaking at a low of 36ms (lower score is better) within the day. According to the report, Latency “is a measure of the time it takes for data packets to travel across the network between a user’s mobile phone and the servers that host mobile apps and websites.”

Globe’s 4G Video Experience is likewise pulling up consistently with a maximum score of 50. 4G Video Experience measures network quality for streaming HD or SD videos on platforms like Youtube and other video on demand apps.

“Diretso ‘yung panonood ko. Umpisa hanggang sa matapos ang misa. (I can watch straight, from the start until the end of the mass),” added Villanueva.

Globe strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9 which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development. Globe is committed to upholding the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.

Globe builds teacher skills on early language literacy

Globe has launched another professional development training for teachers now focusing on early language literacy. Recognized by the Department of Education National Educators Academy of the Philippines, (DepED - NEAP)  this series of webinars coaches educators to effectively help very young students develop their communication skills through blended learning. This is in line with the DepEd campaign to improve teacher productivity and student performance.

The training is led by Teach for the Philippines (TFP) under the banner of Globe’s Global Filipino Teachers (GFT) program featuring webinars that promote 21st century learning and digital resources for teachers. TFP is an award-winning non-stock, non-profit organization that works to provide Filipino children with inclusive, relevant, and excellent education.

Early language literacy was identified as a key topic needed by Grades 1 to 3 teachers in the new normal, for students ages 5 to 8 years old.  The GFT sessions are recognized by DepEd’s National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP),  ensuring that all attendees are able to obtain the knowledge and skills that are vital in the current situation.

“Globe supports DepEd’s thrust to provide learning continuity among public school students. We continue to roll-out programs through various alternative delivery modes and provide teachers and school leaders with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to overcome the challenges posed by an unprecedented school year mired by a global pandemic,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

“Reading is a foundational skill that opens up possibilities for our children. When our students are able to read, they can continue to learn, grow, and eventually, take the necessary steps to improve their lives, as well as those around them. This is our end goal for the Early Language Literacy webinar series with Globe and the National Educators’ Academy of the Philippines (NEAP),” shared Angel Ramos, Teach for the Philippines’ Marketing & Events Director.

The GFT Early Language Literacy Series includes lessons on teaching pre-reading skills, introducing sound and print, decoding and sight reading, and planning a reading program.  These sessions aim to help children build a base for reading through songs, story-telling, conversations, and play.

COVID-19  has forced the entire country to adapt to new ways of reaching and teaching students at home. In response to this challenge, DepEd revised its learning standards for students to focus on the most essential learning competencies (MELCs). DepEd also shifted to flexible learning delivery options including primarily printed modules to be distributed to students’ homes and supplemented with TV, radio, and/or online distance learning.

Globe helps the education sector through training, connectivity, learning tools, and materials.  The company is committed to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including UN SDG No. 4 on Quality Education and UN SDG No. 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
