San Marino Consulate Expands Education Efforts Through Partnerships for Filipino Youth

As education continues to evolve in a rapidly changing world, meaningful partnerships have become increasingly important in expanding learning opportunities for students beyond the classroom. Through collaborations with local organizations, schools, and community groups, the Consulate General of the Republic of San Marino in the Philippines continues to strengthen programs that help young Filipinos grow academically, culturally, and socially.

By working closely with educational institutions and community stakeholders, the Consulate has expanded initiatives that promote lifelong learning and expose students to broader cultural and global perspectives. These efforts reflect the growing understanding that education today extends beyond textbooks and traditional instruction—it also involves nurturing creativity, cultural awareness, and a deeper appreciation of the world.

According to Consul General Jean Henri Lhuillier, education must equip young people with the skills and mindset needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected future.

“Education today must prepare students not only to read and write, but also to understand the world around them, appreciate culture, and adapt to the future. Young learners need opportunities that encourage curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong desire to learn,” said Lhuillier.

This vision has guided several educational and cultural initiatives supported by the Consulate over the years. Beyond promoting literacy, these programs seek to create enriching learning experiences that help students become globally aware while remaining grounded in their communities and cultural identity.

Among the Consulate’s longstanding collaborators is Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc. (CLFI), whose partnership has further strengthened efforts to make educational and community-based programs more accessible to Filipino youth. Together, they continue to support initiatives that encourage literacy, creativity, and inclusive learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

One such initiative is the Consulate’s partnership with Bookmark, Inc. to publish Pamilyang Papel, a children’s activity and storytelling material designed to make cultural education more engaging and accessible. The publication promotes reading, creativity, and the formation of values through interactive learning experiences that introduce young readers to culture and heritage.

Building on these efforts, the Consulate, in collaboration with Cebuana Lhuillier and LINKS Philippines, has continued to strengthen the Hooked on Books Program, an initiative aimed at enhancing learning environments and fostering a stronger culture of reading among Filipino students. The latest project under the program is the development of the JHL-RSM Library, the 30th milestone Hooked on Books (HOB) library established through the initiative.

As part of the project, Leonor Petra G. ElepaƱo met with representatives of the local government and the city administration of Manila, including city administrator Atty. Eduardo Quintos, who expressed support for the initiative and its potential impact on the community.

Currently under construction at Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School, the JHL-RSM Library forms part of the Consulate’s broader commitment to creating more inclusive and supportive spaces for learning. In preparation for its opening, volunteers and partners participated in a three-day community effort that included mural painting activities, library setup, and storytelling sessions for students. These activities reflect the program’s holistic approach to literacy, combining access to books with creative learning experiences that encourage children to develop a lifelong love for reading.

The project has also received support from several private-sector partners. Boysen donated mural paints that helped transform the facility into a vibrant and engaging space for students, while TOSOT served as the project’s air-conditioning sponsor.

Meanwhile, Archispace Design Inc. contributed to the construction and design of the learning space alongside JAS Design and Build Development Corp., led by Sandy Ocampo and Alvin Lu, further highlighting the collaborative effort behind the initiative.

As the project continues to take shape, it reflects San Marino’s enduring commitment to supporting educational programs that expand access to knowledge, encourage cultural appreciation, and help prepare young Filipinos for the opportunities and challenges of the future. Through initiatives such as the JHL-RSM Library, the Consulate continues to demonstrate how partnerships can help create meaningful learning experiences that empower the next generation of Filipino learners.

Part of the award-winning Marriott International brand portfolio, AC Hotel by Marriott Manila brings its signature blend of modern European sophistication, purposeful design, and elevated experiences into the heart of the city.

Designed for the modern traveler, the hotel introduces a hospitality experience centered on what the brand calls “Perfectly Precise” — where every detail is curated to create stays that feel refined, effortless, and memorable.

“AC Hotel by Marriott Manila represents a new perspective on hospitality in the city,” shared Melvyn Angeles, General Manager of AC Hotel by Marriott Manila. “Our goal is to create a stay that elevates the essentials — bringing together purposeful design and the warmth of Filipino hospitality in a way that feels both refreshing and relevant.”

A Design-Led Hospitality Experience

At the heart of AC Hotel by Marriott Manila is a strong design philosophy inspired by the brand’s European roots. The property embraces clean architectural lines, calming palettes, ambient lighting, and carefully arranged spaces that create a seamless sense of sophistication and ease. Every area — from guestrooms to communal spaces — was designed to feel intuitive, functional, and aesthetically refined.
Leading the hotel’s design vision and experiential narrative is Clarice Anne Yu-Sy, Interior Design Director and Managing Director of the property. Her role bridges concept and experience — ensuring that every touchpoint of the hotel embodies exceptional hospitality and timeless sophistication.

“I’ve always believed that true luxury lies in thoughtfulness,” she shares. Her design philosophy reflects a quiet confidence rooted in sincerity and simplicity, where intention guides every detail. In redefining the guest experience, she envisions spaces that restore, inspire, and leave a lasting impression.

The hotel is set within GLAS, the Philippines’ first double-glazed, triple Low-E full glass tower and LEED Platinum-certified development, designed by ASYA’s founder and Executive Chairman Ar. Albert Yu. Envisioned as a contemporary landmark where innovation and sustainability converge, GLAS provides a refined and forward-thinking setting that complements the hotel’s modern hospitality experience.

Elevated Culinary Experiences

Dining at AC Hotel by Marriott Manila reflects the same philosophy that defines the brand — refined, intentional, and approachable.

At the center of the hotel’s culinary direction is Executive Chef Bonn Reyes, a longtime Marriott culinary leader known for his refined yet approachable style.

“At AC Hotel, we want guests to experience flavors that feel comforting yet unexpected,” Chef Bonn shared. “The menu blends local ingredients with European inspiration in a way that feels vibrant, social, and memorable. We want every dining experience to feel curated, whether it’s breakfast at AC Kitchen, cocktails and tapas at AC Lounge, or evenings at AC Bar overlooking the city.”

AC Kitchen offers an all-day dining experience featuring international selections alongside well-loved local dishes elevated through contemporary presentation and technique, all enhanced by thoughtfully curated tabletop accessories developed by Nouvelle. From specialty porcelain plates to refined glassware and dinnerware, each element was carefully selected to complement the brand’s culinary narrative. Together, these details create a dining experience that feels both elevated and thoughtfully immersive.

Meanwhile, AC Lounge and AC Bar bring the brand’s signature social energy to life through thoughtfully plated tapas, curated cocktails, and the signature AC Gin and Tonic experience served in specially designed glassware.

Inspired by European cocktail culture, the AC Gin and Tonic transforms the classic cocktail into a more elevated and sensory-driven experience through carefully selected garnishes, aromas, and presentation. Already, several dishes and signature cocktails have quickly emerged as guest favorites, reinforcing the hotel’s vision of dining as a sensory and social experience rather than simply a meal.

Signature AC Moments Inspired by AC Hotels Worldwide
\
Beyond its beautifully designed spaces, AC Hotel by Marriott Manila introduces guests to signature rituals inspired by AC Hotels around the world — thoughtful experiences that have become part of the brand’s distinct identity.

Among these is the Lavender Turndown Ritual, a calming evening gesture prepared for staying guests to create a sense of relaxation and balance at the end of the day.

Throughout the property, guests are also encouraged to immerse themselves in curated spaces designed for both productivity and connection — from stylish lounges to modern communal areas that embody the AC Hotel lifestyle.

Thoughtfully Designed Facilities for the Modern Traveler

The AC Lounge serves as a dynamic social hub where cocktails and tapas encourage conversation and connection, while the AC Library offers a quieter, design-forward environment for focus, creativity, and pause.

At the ground floor, the AC Store provides convenient grab-and-go selections and curated essentials tailored for guests constantly moving through the rhythm of the city.

Wellness is seamlessly integrated into the experience through the hotel’s indoor swimming pool and fully equipped 24-hour fitness center located on the 57th floor, allowing guests to recharge while overlooking the skyline.

Beyond leisure and stays, AC Hotel by Marriott Manila was also envisioned as a destination for modern gatherings and elevated celebrations.

The hotel features 11 meeting and event spaces spanning over 800 square meters, designed to accommodate intimate gatherings, executive meetings, weddings, and large-scale celebrations.

At the center is the AC Grand Ballroom, a contemporary venue distinguished by expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and flexible configurations that allow events to feel both grand and naturally connected to the city beyond. Complementing the ballroom are executive meeting rooms, a dedicated bridal suite, media salon, and expansive pre-function spaces designed with the same clean architectural lines and understated sophistication found throughout the property.

“AC Hotel by Marriott Manila was created as a perfectly precise destination for both corporate and social gatherings,” shared Ellie Alarcon, Director of Sales. “Whether for business meetings, weddings, or intimate celebrations, every space was designed to feel elevated, flexible, and seamlessly connected to the overall guest experience.”

A Grand Opening Inspired by Precision and Thoughtful Hospitality

To celebrate its Philippine debut, AC Hotel by Marriott Manila welcomed distinguished guests, industry leaders, media personalities, and partners to an exclusive opening celebration that reflected the brand’s “Perfectly Precise” philosophy.

The evening highlighted the hotel’s signature experiences through immersive moments including the AC Gin and Tonic ritual, bespoke engraving experiences, and interactive activations inspired by precision and intentional design.

Summer, Unscripted: Sprite Brings a Refreshing Take on the Filipino Summer

Ice-cold Sprites are the perfect summer drink for a Gen Z Filipino summer

Summer in the Philippines has always carried a distinct rhythm, longer days, relentless heat, and daily moments shaped as much by the streets as by the destination. This season, Sprite is showing up where those moments happen most, bringing refreshment to everyday summer experiences as Filipino youth redefine how they live the season.

While summer was once synonymous with beach trips and long vacations, today’s generation is meaning in moments in between: everyday experiences that feel real, familiar and worth sharing. In these settings, Sprite has remained a natural presence, offering an ice-cold break from the heat during moments that unfold unscripted.

Sprite has long shown up where young Filipinos actually are—from the convenience store across the dorm to the cooler at the local fiesta to a quick stop along a hot commute. It is a steady refreshing companion in the middle of summer’s unpredictability, cutting through the heat and the noise with every sip.

This summer, the brand brought that presence closer to where people already are through on-ground and live experiences across Metro Manila and key destinations nationwide.

At selected transport hubs including One Ayala, LRT Legarda, PITX, and LRT Marikina-Pasig, Sprite set up vending machines that offered commuters a refreshing pause during peak summer heat. The brand also brought its cooling presence to open community spaces such as Marikina Riverbanks and Luneta Park, adding moments of refreshment to everyday routines.

Building on this, Sprite marked the season with large-scale community moments, including a summer event at the SM Mall of Asia By the Bay that brought together music lovers and the youth. The event featured a lineup of local artists like P-POP group BGYO, Fitterkarma, Shanti Dope, Illest Morena and Drag Race Philippines Season 3 winner Maxie Andreison and highlighted how music, shared spaces, and refreshments come together during the Filipino summer. Beyond the city, Sprite extended its summer presence to beach destinations such as La Union, Bolinao, and Boracay, creating spaces for friends to gather, cool down, and enjoy the season by the shore.

These local experiences reflect a broader shift in how summer is being experienced, not just as a destination, but as a series of everyday moments shaped by spontaneity, connection, and choice. And when plans don’t always go as expected, when budgets are tighter or trips don’t push through, Sprite continues to be a familiar constant, offering a refreshment in the moments that matter most, whether during a barkada hangout, a shared meal, or a quick stop to cool down from the heat.

Globally, Sprite’s It’s That Fresh platform celebrates cutting through summer’s noise. In the Philippines, introduced locally as “Yan ang Refreshing,” that idea comes to life through moments that are real, accessible, and rooted in everyday life.

As Filipino youth continue to shape what summer means to them, Sprite remains present, bringing a fresh take to the moments that make the season feel real.

Stay chill, stay cool, and redefine your own idea of summer with Sprite— ‘yan ang refreshing!

Rising Power Costs Reignite Energy Security Debate

What will it take for the Philippines to achieve an economically secure and energy-secure future?

The 1973 and 1979 global oil crises, triggered by supply disruptions in the Middle East at the time, exposed the Philippines’ heavy dependence on imported fuel and caused widespread economic strain across the country. Decades later, the country finds itself facing a familiar challenge once again.

Like dƩjƠ vu, the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which continues to disrupt the global oil market, alongside rising commodity prices and worsening inflation, has once again brought concerns over energy security to center stage. The question remains the same: how can the Philippines secure a stable, affordable, and reliable source of energy?

The volatile Philippine energy landscape
The Philippines remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels for electricity generation, with coal accounting for more than 60% of the country’s energy mix. Natural gas follows, while renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal make up a smaller mix. Because of this, global supply disruptions immediately impact the local energy market, affecting households and businesses alike.

As a result, data shows the Philippines continues to record some of the highest electricity rates in Asia, with households paying an average of $0.207 per kWh—higher than neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Meanwhile, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) raised residential electricity rates to PHP14 pesos per kWh in early 2026, adding further strain on Filipinos already burdened by inflation.

Energy cost and economic impact

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippines is among the countries heavily affected by global oil price shocks because of its strong dependence on imported fuel. Without sufficient domestic energy sources, the country remains vulnerable to sudden international supply disruptions and market volatility.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) has repeatedly emphasized that affordable and reliable energy is one of the key drivers of economic growth. Lower electricity costs could make the Philippines more attractive to foreign investors, particularly in industries that require large-scale manufacturing, technology infrastructure, and data operations.

That is why in a recent media briefing, Pangasinan 2nd District Representative Mark Cojuangco underscored the urgent need for the Philippines to adopt a long-term solution that can provide clean, cheap, and reliable energy amid the ongoing crisis.

Nuclear energy as the key long-term solution

As discussions surrounding the worsening energy crisis continue, advocates argue that nuclear power offers a unique advantage: it can provide stable baseload electricity while significantly reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

According to insights shared by former Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) Director Dr. Carlo Arcilla, nuclear energy could play a critical role in strengthening the Philippines’ long-term energy security because nuclear plants can generate massive amounts of electricity continuously while producing minimal carbon emissions. This positions nuclear energy not only as a potential economic solution, but also as an important strategy for achieving the country’s long-term climate and sustainability goals.

Amid these discussions, Pangasinan 2nd District Representative Mark Cojuangco has renewed calls for a decisive shift in the country’s energy strategy through House Bill No. 8567, a proposed measure that seeks to establish incentives and financing mechanisms to accelerate the development of nuclear power projects in the country.

The bill aims to position nuclear energy as a cornerstone of a more secure, stable, and economically resilient Philippine energy system, while also building on the country’s recent efforts to establish a stronger nuclear regulatory framework following the enactment of the PhilAtom Act.

“The reality is we cannot continue relying on imported fuel if we want long-term energy security and affordable electricity for Filipinos. Nuclear energy gives us the opportunity to build a stable baseload power supply that can support economic growth for decades,” said Cojuangco.

In reports discussing the renewed push for nuclear energy, Alpas Pinas Lead Convenor Gayle Certeza echoed Cojuangco’s stance on the importance of diversifying the country’s energy sources.

“Solar and wind are good energy sources, but they are only available during certain periods of the day. If we rely on solar and wind, we will still need gas or coal as backup sources. That is why we must secure a cheap, clean, and reliable energy future for the next generation. Who wouldn’t want that for our future?” Certeza reiterated.

Indeed, as the country continues to face the same energy challenges, the renewed discussion on nuclear energy signals that the Philippines’ search for a more resilient, stable, and sustainable energy future is far from over.
