Taguig schools to receive eco-friendly handwashing stations in support of Global Handwashing Day

In celebration of Global Handwashing Day, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, the multinational company behind the number 1 anti-bacterial soap in the Philippines Safeguard, is donating eco-friendly handwashing stations to 19 schools in Taguig City as part of its commitment to bringing health and hygiene to Filipinos across the country.

Global Handwashing Day is celebrated every year, on October 15, which aims to promote the importance of proper handwashing with soap as an easy and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep communities safe from diseases.

This initiative is part of P&G's #SafeWASH program in collaboration with Manila Water Foundation, which aims to strengthen efforts to promote the importance of proper handwashing with soap and water in schools. The project underscores the significance of WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) in schools, a commitment at the core of the joint project between the two organizations. The eco-friendly handwashing stations will be constructed in partnership with Green Antz Builders using eco-bricks, which are made by turning plastic waste into durable building blocks.

“These eco-friendly handwashing stations will promote proper WASH habits that will help protect students and teachers from disease-causing bacteria and viruses while also championing sustainability, says King Martin Agoncillo, Corporate Communications Manager at P&G Philippines.

P&G has been a consistent partner of MWF since 2020 in providing students with quality handwashing facilities; promoting health and hygiene through good handwashing practices. The partnership has since constructed 285 handwashing stations, reaching over 1 million students, teachers, and other school staff in over 285 schools in Metro Manila.

The story behind the shelves: How P&G’s sustainable in-store display came to be

Around 80% of P&G’s in-store display shelves have been replaced by collapsible, reusable, and paper-based displays called Flexi-POSMs.

The increasing consumer awareness about sustainability and corporations' role in protecting our planet have compelled the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry to shift towards sustainable product packaging.

For trusted consumer goods company Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, they are also doing sustainable solutions in other parts of their business operations.

Project LESS is a P&G initiative that aims to create better and more sustainable alternatives to other significant but often overlooked materials. Since its launch in 2021, P&G’s Project LESS has customized its product bundling packaging by converting single-use laminate-based bellybands and stickers to 100% FSC-certified papers, introduced flexible and reusable point-of-sale materials (POSMs) and recycled P&G cartons into honeycomb-like wrappers for last mile packaging in e-commerce deliveries.

Among these, replacing old, single-use in-store displays with a more sustainable alternative called flexi-POSMs, is one of the biggest projects P&G has taken on through Project LESS.

“At P&G, sustainability is an integral part of our operation. Our flexi-POSM initiative is part of our continuing commitment to do what’s good for our consumers, and what’s good for business,” says Anna Legarda, Communications Director of P&G Philippines.

What are flexi-POSMs?

Product in-store displays commonly seen in grocery stores and supermarkets. They are branded, usually made of plastic, and often single-use.

P&G began shifting to flexi-POSMs, which are collapsible, reusable, and paper-based to operate more sustainably with partners and consumers.

The easy-to-revisual structure also allows P&G brands to reuse the flexi-POSMs, prolonging their life cycle. This reusability has also allowed the company to successfully reduce approximately 20,000 kg of virgin material use. The flexi-POSMs are also collapsible and lightweight, making it possible to transport twice as much in one trip, enabling lessening of P&G’s carbon footprint from transportation, as well.

Since its launch in 2021, the company has converted more than 80% of its traditional floor displays into flexible POSMs in various retail stores in the Philippines.

These efforts, along with the rest of P&G’s sustainability endeavors in its operations earned the company the Sustainability Company of The Year’s Circle of Excellence Award at the recent 2022 CEO Asia Awards.

P&G continues hand hygiene promotion efforts with the Philippine Red Cross

Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, whose portfolio has been trusted over the years for its premium health care, home care, beauty, and grooming products, continues stepping up as a Force for Good in helping defend the health of the country with its latest partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).

With the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, P&G and PRC distributed COVID-19 Care Kits containing Safeguard Body Wash, Safeguard Foaming Liquid Hand Soap, and P&G medical-grade face masks to 5,000 beneficiaries from different hospitals, medical centers, isolation facilities, and most at-risk populations in priority areas across the country. Together, they aim to continue advocating proper hygiene, and giving access to sanitation products and wash-enabling environments.

“We are thankful to the Philippine Red Cross for their steadfast commitment to ensure safe and healthy communities. We hope that our extended support can help protect the most vulnerable and help the country fully recover from COVID-19,” says Anna Legarda-Locsin, Communications Director for P&G Philippines.

A force for good

P&G’s partnership with PRC is part of its mission to continue serving and improving the lives of consumers who rely and trust on their products to protect their homes and everyday lives. Since the start of the pandemic, P&G has helped provide the comforts of home, health, and hygiene through its donation of locally-produced medical grade face masks, hygiene products, personal protective equipment (PPEs), and handwashing facilities to medical institutions and organizations.

Earlier this year, P&G also helped PRC vaccinate over 52,000 vulnerable individuals in Region IV-A through PRC’s Bakuna Bus project. P&G also partnered with Robinsons Supermarket and PRC for the “Victory Over Virus” donation program which will vaccinate over 2,000 senior citizens in rural areas in Region IV-A this August.

P&G was also the Department of Health's largest private partner in the "BIDA Solusyon sa COVID-19" nationwide education campaign launched with the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for better health habits.

For its workforce, the company launched the Alagang P&G program where employees were given Alaga and Health Defense Kits containing hygiene and healthcare essentials to help protect against COVID-19 on top of other programs for employee health and wellness

P&G’s "people-first" approach to flexible work set up

Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines, whose portfolio has been trusted over the years for its premium health care, home care, beauty, and grooming products, continues to be a great place to work as it prioritizes employees’ wellbeing for a smooth transition to return to the office safely

As our country recovers from the ongoing pandemic, government alert levels have been reduced to lessen remaining economic restrictions and allow recovery in economic growth. This prompted some companies to return to their offices.

Working in a physical office has benefits for both employees and companies: it allows for better coaching or mentoring, especially for the new hires, and more focused productivity and optimized collaboration in creating innovative ideas. However, there are also benefits from giving employees more flexibility to manage their time between work and personal lives which is something that P&G recognizes. P&G pioneered flexible working arrangements and working from home since the early 2000s and now since the pandemic, has established stricter safety protocols and procedures in their offices to safeguard everyone’s wellbeing towards a better normal..

“Returning to work at our offices is a positive step to ensuring we maintain our collaborative workplace culture. It gives our employees a chance to interact in person again and re-establish connections with teams and colleagues through face-to-face meetings and conversations,” Vince Dizon, P&G’s Country Human Resources Leader shared.

People-first approach

Recognizing that employees may have varying needs, P&G first conducted an employee survey and carefully assessed each employee’s personal situations. For example, some employees are currently living with family members who are more vulnerable to the virus, others may have already relocated away from the city to their hometowns or have children enrolled in distance schooling who require their assistance.

"While we are excited to open our doors, we also planned this carefully with employees as our top priority. In addition to ensuring that everyone is safe from the virus with all required measures in place, we also ensured that our employees will continue to have the flexibility and assistance through our programs, policies and benefits to help them navigate the ever-changing new normal,” Vince added.

The company allowed employees to coordinate their chosen days to work in the office independently, or as a team to maximize efficiency and allow a more intentional and productive outcome.

Transitions were phased to assure the safety of each employee, providing office safety training, establishing guidance on contact tracing and standard disinfection protocols in the event of an identified COVID case, and guaranteeing everyone’s physical safety in the office, including regular disinfection of workstation and available sanitizers, and adequate ventilation. Teleconsultation continues to be available for all P&G employees who are in need of medical attention, as well as medical advice and proper protocols in the event of infection.

P&G also partnered with Mindscapes, SafeSpace, and In Touch Philippines for online, and over-the-phone mental and emotional support, on top of their Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which is a 24-hour free and confidential access to advice on financial, emotional, legal and other matters that may affect the employees personally. Moreover, the company provided all of its employees with return to office kits that included P&G manufactured medical grade face masks, insulated reusable cups, personal utensils, and P&G hygiene products that employees could use while working in the office.

“As the world recovers from the pandemic, we will continue to remain vigilant to ensure everyone’s health and safety including mental and emotional health,” said Vince.
