Viral elderly gets livelihood support through Jollibee’s Grand Thank You project

Lola Maria and her family enjoying their langhap-sarap meals in Jollibee SM Lucena City last September 11, Grandparents’ Day
Jollibee, the Philippines’ leading fast-food chain, is known for its unparalleled support for Filipino family values. Following the viral advertisement #KwentongJollibee “Kahera”, the brand released yet another heartwarming online video, “Handog Kay Lola Maria”, that featured the exemplary proof of the selflessness, support, and love of grandparents.

Jollibee, in partnership with Coca-Cola Philippines, made Lola Maria’s dream come true by granting her a sari-sari store.

The video featured a 74-year-old Badjao grandmother named Lola Maria Tequillo who, despite her old age, dove for coins thrown by tourists at a nearby pier in Lucena, Quezon Province to support her family, most especially her four grandchildren. Lola Maria was discovered through a viral feature of broadcasting network GMA’s documentary program, Front Row.

Lola Maria and her husband and grandchildren celebrate Grandparent’s Day with a toast.

“Ang hanap-buhay ko ay maninisid araw-araw, mga bente-anyos na ako maninisid dito, (I dive for spare coins for a living and I’ve been doing it every day for 20 years now),” said Lola Maria in the video. “Pupunta ako sapier, mag-aabang talaga ako ng barko at manghihingi talaga ako ng barya. Minsan parang ako’y aabutan ng mahinang katawan, kaya lang, konting tiis para naman meron kaming makain. (I head to the pier, wait for a ship to pass by, and ask its passengers to throw in some coins for me. Sometimes, my body would be too weak but I have to continue doing this so my family will have something to eat).”
Jollibee celebrated this year’s Grandparent’s Day by heading to Quezon Province to treat Lola Maria and her loved ones to a hearty Jollibee feast. Soon after, Jollibee, in partnership with Coca-Cola Philippines, granted Lola Maria her dream sari-sari store so that she never has to dive for coins again. Through the Coca-Cola partnership, Lola Maria and her daughter was also provided important sari-sari management tips and basic information on how to effectively run and maintain their new source of income.

The special Grandparents’ Day activity for Lola Maria also became the launchpad for Jollibee’s Grand Thank You project which aims to help ease the plight of elderly people. The Grand Thank You project encourages everyone to take part in providing support and possibly more sustainable livelihood to elderly Filipinos in need.

Jollibee, in partnership with Coca-Cola Philippines, officially turns over the sari-sari store to Lola Maria and her daughter. “Jollibee recognizes the hard work and tireless effort that lolos and lolas go through to support and show their love for their families,” said Francis Flores, Jollibee Global Brand CMO. “Apart from Jollibee’s well-loved,langhap-sarap products, an endeavor such as the Grand Thank You project furthers our thrust of providing joy to countless Filipino families.”

LEGO Opens the FIRST Certified Store in the North and Partners with UNICEF Philippines

Myrnz Roman

The LEGO Northern Invasion happened as LEGO opens the first Certified Store in the North - here in TRINOMA!

Fun, intuitive and simple – these are the hallmarks of toy design that made the LEGO bricks and minifigures the most beloved toys worldwide. A brainchild of carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen who introduced it in Denmark stores in 1932, the brand soon went global and it did not take long when it became a hit in the Philippines, earning a steadily growing following from children and those young at heart who use each LEGO piece to build toys and realities straight from their imagination.

Encapsulating the dream of its founder to “inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow,” the global toymaker continues to expand its presence in the Philippine market by opening LEGO’s Third Certified Store in Trinoma Mall, Quezon City on November 12, 2016.

A LEGO Certified Store offers the following unique features that inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow through creative free play and developing the imagination:

  • Pick-a-Brick wall (PAB) – a custom-built fixture filled with LEGO bricks and elements where shoppers can hand-pick and select what they need to build something based on their own design and imagination.
  • Fully assembled LEGO sets around the circumference of the store to inspire LEGO fans.
  • An interactive play area that’s prominently positioned in the centre of the store to give children a “hands-on, minds-on” experience with LEGO bricks.
  • Exclusive LEGO sets are available

The store is the third in a series of stores that will open from Manila to Davao in the country under LEGO’s “Better With Every Brick” campaign.

LEGO together with UNICEF Philippines, UN’s agency that supports children’s welfare, will work together to help build the first National Centre for Children with Disabilities in Philippine General Hospital. To support UNICEF’s program, a portion of the sales at LEGO Certified Stores in the country will be donated for the Centre’s construction. LEGO will also issue a cheque worth Php 500,000 as part of the fundraising drive to raise a total of Php 10 Million for the construction of the Centre.

“The LEGO brand goes beyond being one of the top global toymakers, we are a beloved builder of childhood fantasies. We aim to inspire and engage the world’s builder by injecting fun into play. This partnership with UNICEF Philippines resonates well with this dream to extend the opportunity to help more children by bringing the National Centre for Children with Disabilities to reality,” said LEGO executive.
“And LEGO fans can pitch in this initiative of making the world ‘Better With Every Brick,’” said LEGO executive.
Jan Mitchel Mina, laj Philippines Marketing Manager
The LEGO Northern Invasion would not be complete without exciting deals for the whole month of November:

For a minimum single receipt purchase of P5999.75 on any LEGO item/s from the LEGO Certified Store TriNoma from Nov 12 to 30, 2016, P1000 of the sale proceeds will go to UNICEF to help build the Centre. As an exclusive treat, LEGO fans can get a FREE engraving service on one, white 1x6 LEGO brick to personalize their LEGO Store Sets

Also, LEGO fans and lovers can purchase LEGO poly bags in support of the fundraising campaign for the National Centre for Children with Disabilities where 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each poly bag will be donated to this UNICEF project.

Each collectible poly bag featuring four different designs sells for P100 each and comes from the LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Juniors, LEGO Friends and LEGO NEXO Knights lines.

Last but definitely not the least, the long awaited LEGO Disney Castle Set will have an exclusive first release at the LEGO Certified Store TriNoma! What’s more, for customers who purchase the set, P1000 will be donated on their behalf to UNICEF for the construction of the Centre!

Pioneer Insurance accepting entries for #MoveOnLang Songwriting Competition

Pioneer, one of the top life and non-life insurance companies in the country, is inviting aspiring songwriters and musicians to join the #MoveOnLang Songwriting Competition.

Participants can submit their entries at www.moveonlang.ph until November 15, 2016 for a chance to win a cash prize of up to PHP 100,000 plus PHP 100,000 worth of insurance coverage from Pioneer, as well as the opportunity to have their songs recorded and performed by musicians of their choice.

Applicants must be aged 15 to 24 years old and currently enrolled as students in the Philippines to join. Each applicant can submit up to five song entries, with a maximum song length of 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Applicants can also register as a group with up to five members, with one member designated as the official representative.

In line with the theme of moving on, song entries must be inspirational and about bouncing back from life’s challenges.

“We wanted a theme that would exemplify what being a Filipino is all about. We are known all over the world for our resilience, with new stories appearing everyday about Filipinos getting back on their feet after life has dealt them a hard blow. We want this competition to produce songs that can inspire the nation to keep on moving forward despite setbacks and difficulties,” shared Pioneer’s Marketing Head Len Pozon.

A panel of professionals and practitioners from the music industry will screen the entries and select ten finalists, all of whom will receive PHP 100,000 worth of insurance coverage from Pioneer. The finalists will be announced on December 5, 2016, and their songs posted at the event’s official site www.moveonlang.ph as well as on Pioneer’s social media pages (Facebook page www.facebook.com/PioneerIsYourInsurance).

Online voting period will begin on December 5 upon announcement of the finalists and will end on December 16. The finalist with the most votes will be crowned Online Favorite and awarded a cash prize of PHP 10,000.

A PHP 100,000 cash prize awaits the grand winner, while the second and third placer will get PHP 50,000 and PHP 30,000 respectively. A consolation prize of PHP 10,000 will be given to each of the remaining seven finalists.

Over the past few years, Pioneer has made it their priority to support the arts by encouraging the youth towards artistic pursuits through competitions in various creative fields like video production, playwriting and this year, songwriting.
“Filipinos have always loved music, and songs are a powerfully simple way to express oneself and inspire others,” shares Ms. Pozon. “We want to share Pioneer’s message of hope through this competition and through the next generation of homegrown musicians. This competition is also a wonderful chance for us to support and promote our local music industry among the youth, through our partnership with FILSCAP” says Ms. Pozon.

Since September, the FILSCAP Campus Caravan toured several universities around Metro Manila. Students from the University of The Philippines Diliman, University of Santo Tomas, San Beda College Alabang, University of Makati and De La Salle University Manila had the chance to learn about songwriting from prominent songwriters and icons from the music industry like Rico Blanco, Yael Yuzon, Gloc 9, Champ Lui Pio, and Raimund Marasigan. The Campus Caravan is set to visit University of the Philippines Los Baños and University of Mindanao this November.
