Globe Telecom’s Ernest Cu is “CEO of the Year” finalist in World Communications Awards 2017

Ernest Cu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Globe Telecom, has been named a finalist in the "CEO of the Year" category at the World Communications Awards 2017 (WCA), the largest awards ceremony in global telecoms organized by Total Telecom.

Established in 1999, the WCA recognize excellence among global telecom leaders -- being synonymous with innovation, merit and outstanding performance in the telecoms field.

Cu was shortlisted in the “CEO of the Year” category in recognition of his efforts to make Globe competitive both globally and locally. His leadership redefined the telco landscape in the Philippines and helped set the trends in the industry.

Ernest Cu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Globe Telecom

“I am grateful to WCA for this nomination. It brings honor to my country and company to be recognized among the top players in this vastly competitive industry. In Globe, we constantly challenge ourselves to bring out the best for our customers and to become relevant to the Filipino digital consumer by introducing game-changing and leading edge products and services,” he said.

Cu has been named best CEO several times by various industry award giving bodies since he assumed the position in 2008. He is credited for understanding the consumer and adapting a challenger mindset, which makes it easy for the team to come up with products and services that are first-to-market game-changing offers. Beyond that, he engineered the network modernization that propelled the telecom firm to be the Philippine leader in mobile today.

His vision and anticipation of what the market would look like allowed the company to grow beyond telecom services and venture into diverse entertainment services through partnerships with international brands such as Disney, Spotify, Sports Illustrated, Hooq, among others.

More recently, Cu spearheaded faster and more accessible home broadband services when Globe fast-tracked the deployment of its 700-MHz spectrum. The company's goal is to connect 2 million households nationwide by 2020.

“The bar has been raised for CEO of the Year this year, as we have moved assessment of the finalists by our main panel of judges. Ernest Cu has done exceptionally well to make the final 5 from the many nominations we received,” said Rob Chambers, CEO of Total Telecom.

With 21 categories, entries to WCA were reviewed by an expert panel of judges. The finalists highlight operators, partners and solution providers who have excelled over the last year. Cu is up against Ahmad Hanandeh of Zain Jordan, Alan Masarek of Vonage, and Rick Calder of GTT Communications.

The winner will be decided by a vote open to telecom industry professionals from across the globe. Winners of the 2017 WCA will be announced at the gala dinner to be held on November 28 at Supernova, London.

DJI Launches Privacy Mode For Drone Operators To Fly Without Internet Data Transfer

New Local Data Mode Provides Enhanced Data Privacy Assurances

DJI, the world’s leader in civilian drones and aerial imaging technology, today launched a new Local Data Mode that stops internet traffic to and from its DJI Pilot app, in order to provide enhanced data privacy assurances for sensitive government and enterprise customers.

Local Data Mode will be available in the next update on the DJI Pilot app on CrystalSky and for select Android tablets. When an operator activates Local Data Mode, the app will stop sending or receiving any data over the internet. This adds an additional layer of security for operators of flights involving critical infrastructure, governmental projects or other sensitive missions.

“We are creating Local Data Mode to address the needs of our enterprise customers, including public and private organizations that are using DJI technology to perform sensitive operations around the world,” said Brendan Schulman, DJI’s Vice President of Policy and Legal Affairs. “DJI is committed to protecting the privacy of its customers’ photos, videos and flight logs. Local Data Mode will provide added assurances for customers with heightened data security needs.”

Since Local Data Mode blocks all internet data, the DJI Pilot app will not be able to detect the location of the user, show the map and geofencing information such as No Fly Zones and temporary flight restrictions. In addition, it will not notify drone operators of firmware updates. Telemetry data on flight logs such as altitude, distance or speed will remain stored on the aircraft even if the user deactivates Local Data Mode.

Whether Local Data Mode is activated or not, photos and videos captured by the user are always stored on the drone's SD card and are only shared if the user chooses to upload them online to the SkyPixel community, social media or other websites.

When using Local Data Mode, drone operators are reminded that they are solely responsible for the safety of their flight operation and that they understand that features that may enhance and support the safety of their operations, but that rely on internet connectivity, are no longer available.

Drone operators can enable Local Data Mode by opening the DJI Pilot app, clicking on “Activate LDM Mode” and entering a password which will be required to deactivate Local Data Mode when they decide to go online again.

New drones will still have to be activated first by logging into the user’s DJI account with an email and a password. To ensure the drone has the latest firmware, users can download and update it while they have internet connectivity before re-activating Local Data Mode.

“DJI has moved to address customer needs by developing Local Data Mode to provide enhanced data management options,” said Walter Stockwell, DJI's Director of Technical Standards. “We are pleased to be able to develop Local Data Mode as part of our drive to advocate for our customers’ interests.”

The Local Data Mode feature may not be available in locations where an internet connection is required or highly advisable due to local regulations. To download the DJI Pilot app, please visit http://www.dji.com/matrice-200-series/info#downloads.
