Project Bass (Bandwidth and Signal Statistics): BASS PH app officially launched

BASS PH or Project Bass (Bandwidth and Signal Statistics) - A revolutionary application that will help users measure the speed of internet connection of smartphones was launched last Thursday, November 9 at the Newports City, Resorts World Manila.

BASS PH, Bandwidth and Signal Strength is a mobile app designed by volunteers for volunteers to crowdsource location-based bandwidth and signal strength measurements of their carrier of choice to compile actionable data that will used to improve the state of local internet quality in the Philippines.

BASS PH or Project Bass (Bandwidth and Signal Statistics) is an accurate and credible independent internet measurement provider. Its mobile app will provide Internet users the ability to measure internet bandwidth and other statistics.

The launch of BASS PH is deemed vital amid the clamor to further improve the status of internet connection in the country.

Wilson Chua

At this time where the Philippines lags behind other countries even in Southeast Asia in terms of quality of internet speed, the app offers far-reaching benefits for a variety of users. For subscribers and customers, they can use a virtual map to help them see which telecommunications provider has the fastest internet connection where they live or work.

Telecommunications companies benefit from the collected data since they can now make data driven decisions as to expansion areas to target. They can also reallocate resources such as bandwidth and frequency to areas that need it most.

For phone manufacturers, they can also access information as regards the performance of their phone units during actual usage and compare these with competitors. This can result to the manufacture of more efficient and better-performing phones in the future.

As for companies with businesses in the digital world, the BASS PH map can help them identify specific target areas with high internet activity and concentrate their digital product offerings there. Finally, BASS PH can help the government guard and protect the public against any possible fraud using BASS PH’s free, supplemental, third-party data.

More importantly, BASS PH is absolutely free to download, and the generated data will likewise be free to the public and other interested users. This makes the data even more valuable since it was generated by an app developed by an independent, third-party organization. Heavy users of data like the telco companies will benefit tremendously from this since they do not have to pay for the data, unlike those that come from companies like Akamai, Open Signal and Ookla, where access to data and other internet measurements and statistics are paid via subscription.

And no worries because BASS PH is easy to use. Just go to Google Play or App Store and download. You can begin the test by opening the app and press “Begin Test” to measure your connection speed. Then by viewing the map, users will be able to see the test results of BASS users in a particular area. BASS PH is available for both Android and iOS users and is easy to store in any smartphone. All it needs is around 30MB of storage landscape and will consume minimal time and data for every test.

“With BASS PH, we help empower smartphone users in the Philippines by giving them the tool to measure and log internet speeds. We hope this, in turn, will ensure that network providers in the country will efficiently and consistently deliver their advertised internet speeds and thus will pave the way to better internet service nationwide,” explains Wilson Chua of Bass PH.

Bass PH also called for a stronger cooperation and collaboration between the government and the telco companies, where they can join hands to achieve the ultimate goal: improve the state of internet in the Philippines. He/she also advised the public to share or contribute their measurements in order to help improve speed and overall internet experience in the Philippines. He/She also expressed the willingness of BASS PH to help support other government-initiated efforts and investments that will help achieve the goal of providing Filipinos with better internet.

Vision Petron opens Fuel Creativity Exhibit at Bencab Museum

On its 17th year, Vision Petron, the multi-awarded national student art competition of oil industry leader Petron Corporation, opened its Fuel Creativity Exhibit at the Bencab Museum in Baguio, last October 14, 2017.

The month-long exhibit is a retrospective painting exhibition featuring selected works of Vision Petron National Student Art Competition grand prize winners over the years.

Originally conceptualized as an art competition to inspire young artists from all over the country, Vision Petron has evolved to become a venue for expression, even on social issues such as the environment, and now includes photography, T-shirt design, video-making, and most recently, music.

Vision Petron’s Fuel Creativity Exhibit showcases the best works of budding Filipino artists from the turn of the millennium, when the competition was first introduced, and reflects the changing themes that embody the best of Filipino values, culture, and heritage.

Benedicto Cabrera, or Bencab as he is more popularly known, is a National Artist for the Visual Arts, and a staunch presence as a member of the Vision Petron board of judges. Himself a multi-awarded winner of many art competitions as a struggling young artist, Bencab serves as a role model for the thousands of talented Filipino youth who submit their entries in the various Vision Petron competition categories.

At the opening of the Vision Petron Fuel Creativity Exhibit, Bencab remarked, “The collection highlights the artists’ emerging styles, individual methods of self-expression, and search for identity.”

For the 2017 Vision Petron competition, the theme was Tuklas Kagalingan: Rediscovering Filipino Ingenuity. Entries focused on one of our unique strengths as a people, the ingenuity of the Filipino that captures the spirit of innovation and creativity, rooted in our natural resources. Judging was recently completed, and winners will be announced soon.

Every year, Vision Petron wins recognitions, and now has over 150 awards. The Vision Petron Folio, a magazine for youth on Philippine art and culture, has been inducted into the Anvil Hall of Fame for consistently earning the Gold Anvil year after year. Vision Petron also recently bagged four International Association of Business Communications (IABC) awards, including two Awards of Excellence, at the 15th Philippine Quill Awards.

The Vision Petron Fuel Creativity exhibit will run from October 14 to November 26, 2017, at the Indigo Gallery of the Bencab Museum on Km. 6 Asin Road, Tuba, Metro Baguio.

Globe LIVE & 9Works Theatricals bring back Menken & Ahrenn’s ‘A Christmas Carol’

HERO Foundation to benefit from Christmas show

The “spirits” of the season are brought to life once again as Globe LIVE and 9Works Theatricals brings Menken & Ahrenn’s A Christmas Carol back on stage for this holiday season. After its successful 2016 run, the whole family can once again create new traditions by reliving the Charles Dickens classic through impeccable production and classic music.

A Christmas Carol tells the story of a miserly man who finds happiness in sharing the joys of the season after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future.

Starting December 1, 2017, A Christmas Carol will premiere with some new cast members and a new production set that shouldn’t be missed! It will premiere on December 1, 2017 at the Globe Iconic Stage, BGC Amphitheater, Taguig, this time with Franco Laurel as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Reprising his role as the curmudgeon Scrooge is the seasoned Miguel Faustman.

Globe LIVE’s strengthened partnership with 9Works Theatrical in staging award winning Filipino productions helps Filipino talent shine even brighter on the family-friendly venue. Efforts such as these allows quality theater productions to reach a wider audience.

According to Joe Caliro, Globe Head for Creative Marketing and Multi-Media Services, and the musical’s executive producer, “A Christmas Carol’s second run is part of our effort to encourage our customers in creating new traditions with the whole family. We chose to stage A Christmas Carol again because it resonates with the colorful holiday celebrations here in the Philippines. It also teaches us the valuable lesson of giving, which is what the season is all about. With the successful it had last year, we wanted to offer it once again to eventually make it a Filipino Christmas tradition that everyone can enjoy.”

Making this year’s production extra special is Globe LIVE’s support for the HERO Foundation through the “Wall of Miracles”. To be able to support more military orphans and send them to school, all of A Christmas Carol’s show will have the “Wall of Miracles” display that guests will be invited to decorate with Christmas ornaments that will be sold at the venue. All the proceeds from the sale of the ornaments alongside an additional donation from Globe LIVE will be turned over to the HERO Foundation.

A non-stock, non-profit organization, HERO stands for Help, Educate and Rear Orphans. It has been providing educational stipends to military orphans. The financial support helps keep orphans in school as it covers much needed requirements such as school supplies, transportation, meals and even a portion of their tuition fee.

Globe LIVE is the original live productions arm of the telco company that aims to offer customers more entertainment experiences that are out-of-the-box, online and offline. Globe LIVE continues to be a purveyor of world-class entertainment, and with its partnership with 9Works Theatrical, is once again providing a venue for local theater to be appreciated by Filipinos.
