World Vision launches its “Back-to-School” campaign to support Filipino children for the opening of the school year 2021-2022.

World Vision
calls to support a meaningful future for Filipino children in the “Back-to-School” campaign

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the consequences of COVID-19 continue to affect many, especially those living in the most vulnerable conditions. Among those most heavily affected are children as the pandemic continues to disrupt their learning and development and makes education inaccessible to millions of students nationwide.

Research conducted by World Vision revealed that since 2019, almost three million students have dropped out of school and that five in ten families lacked access to basic education. These problems have only worsened during the pandemic because of the limited avenues to learn. In the absence of face-to-face learning, online or remote methods have become the temporary norm, however, more than 38% of children in far-flung areas are unable to take advantage of this medium as they cannot afford the technological materials required.

In the face of these challenges, World Vision continues to believe that every child has the right to have access to quality education in these trying times through the “Back-to-School” campaign. The campaign hopes to not only raise enough money to sponsor learning materials for students but also highlight the need to create a more meaningful future for them.

“Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, it is inspiring to see a number of most vulnerable children continue to have access to quality education. With your support to World Vision’s Back To School campaign, we can sustain their learning and help them reach their full potential. Together, we can look forward to a bright future,” said Mr. Rommel Fuerte, World Vision National Director.

 Celebrity Ambassador Jasmine Curtis Smith

Last year, World Vision’s “Back-to-School” campaign has helped 64,000 children by raising funds to provide school kits and printed modules for students in remote areas. This year, World Vision strives to help even more as they carry the same mission with the campaign’s Celebrity Ambassador Jasmine Curtis Smith and World Vision Advocate Scarlet Snow Belo.

“The pandemic has severely hindered many children’s opportunities to have a good education, but we’re hoping that World Vision’s ‘Back-to-School’ campaign could help them in any way and that everyone can find their reasons to support a child. This is a cause I really believe in, and I stand with World Vision in ensuring that these children reach their full potential through education,” said Jasmine Curtis Smith.

In line with the advocacy of the Back to School campaign, Jasmine Curtis-Smith recently donated to World Vision 1,500 children’s books that aim to educate kids on proper and secure use of the internet. The donated books will go to at least a thousand children in Malabon.

"Bigas Mula Sa Puso"

Local charity initiative sparks joy in community despite challenges for the tourism sector, a travel and tour business owner sought the time and resources to distribute sacks of rice to her community and colleagues in the industry.

Llemiche Artwork President and Klik N’ Fly Travel and Tours General Manager Michelle Taylan started giving sack of rice to her friends last year as a gift during the lockdown period and later in July named it as "Bigas Mula Sa Puso" to offer a small help to her fellow travel and tourism workers who have been greatly affected by the pandemic.

Taylan and her team were able to distribute 300 sacks of rice to 300 beneficiaries for the first batch. “Lahat naman tayo hirap sa panahong ‘to, pero if you can extend help, then by all means why wouldn’t you?” Taylan said. “The travel sector was badly hit and is still in the process of trying to stay afloat so any help from anyone is welcome.”

Taylan, who also serves as President of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), the biggest group of travel agents and tourism stakeholders in the country, has been pushing for additional aid for industry workers.

This includes postponing payments for lease and waiving permits and other operational fees and premiums for travel and tour businesses that have yet to resume operations or are running under limited capacity.

“We want to imbibe the Bayanihan spirit, especially now with the sector still unable to fully get back on its feet. We took inspiration from the community pantries that sprouted last April,” Taylan said. Taylan said their goal is to continue providing more batches of rice donations and reach more beneficiaries. She is also hoping to expand donation items to be distributed if funds and donors allow it.

“No help is too small. We never know what someone may be going through so it’s always better to lend a helping hand whenever possible,” Taylan said.

Mental Health Matters: Kylie Versoza and KonsultaMD partner for mental wellness

Mental health matters. This is why KonsultaMD named Kylie Versoza, Mental Health Matters (MHM) founder and 2016 Miss International winner, as its champion for mental health. The partnership aims to provide mental health support and awareness to more Filipinos.

The feeling of being alone is normal, especially when faced with extreme challenges such as a pandemic. However, with the help of friends, colleagues and partners like MHM and KonsultaMD, Filipinos need not fight this battle alone.

MHM, which was established last 2017, started as an online and support group and is now a non-government organization. This organization aims to raise awareness and remove the stigma surrounding Mental Health and Mental Illness. The organization continues to educate parents, schools, universities, and corporate institutions. Stemming from the culture of belongingness and acceptance from the pillars of MHM, the organization has extended their community throughout the Philippines.

Those in need of support may receive FREE consultations for one month by simply downloading the KonsultaMD app and inputting KMDKylie as the voucher code, then pressing “2” for mental health assistance when calling the KonsultaMD hotline.

“Depression is a real sickness that needs to be treated for you to get better. I know it takes supreme effort on your end. It takes willpower. It is going to be difficult, but you have to drag yourself out of bed; just take it one day at a time. Brushing your teeth and taking a shower when you’re depressed may be the smallest thing, but that is already a triumph,” said Kylie Versoza, MHM Founder.

“Having access to telehealth for one’s mental health is now essential. Telehealth bridges the gap across remote areas where no doctors are physically present. Through KonsultaMD, you can consult a doctor anytime, anywhere through voice or video,” said Cholo Tagaysay, KonsultaMD Chief Executive Officer.

KonsultaMD is a 24/7 telemedicine service under 917Ventures, the country’s largest corporate venture builder and wholly-owned subsidiary of Globe. Manned by skilled and licensed Filipino doctors, it provides not only primary health care but also mental health support and psychiatric and psychological services through voice or video calls anytime, anywhere. The app also offers e-prescriptions, e-laboratory requests, and e-medical certificates.
