How to set up an urban farm with limited home spaces

City dwellers are often removed from the agricultural process that brings food to their tables. But thanks to technology, there's a growing trend of urban farming that is making it possible for people to grow their own food right in their own backyards or balconies.

Professor Vernie Compas signs a copy of his book

Recently, Professor Vern Compas, with support from Bank of China Manila, launched his book entitled “Crafting an Innovative Urban Garden” at the Ascott in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The book looks at how city dwellers can now realize small-scale home-based farming technology to produce vegetables right in their own home and small yards.

Known as “Mr. Organic” among his partner farmers and organic farming advocates, Compas has been advocating organic and urban farming, healthy food, food security, and the environment including population and development for already a decade.

Deng Jun, Country Head of Bank of China Manila, and Professor Vernie Compas advocate for urban farming and sustainable development in the Philippines.

As an advocate of development, Compas envisions raising the interest of Filipinos living in an urban setting to become self-sufficient and generate healthy food and income through urban farming technology.

In his book, Compas gives out the following tips for those who want to set up their own urban garden even with limited spaces:

1.     Choose an indoor or outdoor space. For the outdoor garden, choose areas where the morning sunlight can reach your plants. If not, a net can be used to provide shade to minimize heat and moisture. For an indoor garden, it is best to support it with full light spectrum grow lights. These grow lights contain colors that help indoor plants produce chlorophyll and support their germination and growth development.

2.     Choose the type of urban farming setup. There are different kinds of urban farming setups based on the available spaces and resources. A hydroponics setup using the Kratky method or Nutrient Film Technique can support planting lettuce in a vertical design. There is also container gardening using recycled bottles, containers, and jars. No matter the gardening model or the plants to be produced, it can all be done with the right technology and skills, available resources, and the commitment of the urban farmer.

3.     Proper Watering System. Now, every plant needs water to grow and produce the right yield or harvest. In the case of urban farming, whether soil-based farming or water-system farming, the amount of water should be based on the needs of the plants. In the case of lettuce production through a hydroponics system, much water is required based on the method and technique used. But in soil-based lettuce urban farming production, the drip system makes sure that the soil has enough moisture. There are also available soil-testers, moisture- testers, and water-testers in the market for use in determining the level of moisture, acidity, and alkalinity of the desired growing medium.

4.     Proper Fertilization System. Each plant needs fertilization to ensure better growth development, color, and higher yield. However, the use of synthetic fertilizers or synthetic nutrient solutions is not recommended. The author recommends that the urban farmer use an organic nutrient solution as they are also available in the market. Compas highly recommends that the urban farmer learn how to produce their own concoctions from their kitchen waste. The urban farmer can produce Fish Amino Acids (FAA) from fish intestines or bones, Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ), or Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ) right from their kitchen waste.

5.     Effective Pest Management System. As described in the fertilization section, the use of organic nutrients solution has an ingredient that protects the plants from insects, fungus, and diseases. Compas warns against the use of chemical-based pesticides or insecticides as they can contaminate the plant, soil, water, and the air. They can also be harmful to the gardener and the community as a whole.

For Bank of China, supporting Compas is part of its larger mission of embedding Environmental, Social, and Governance initiatives into its activities. According to Deng Jun, Country Head at Bank of China Manila, this is because sustainability is a core long-term strategy at Bank of China. “The Group continues to integrate sustainable development into its overall business development strategy and daily business operations, promoting sustainable development through various innovative transformation and digitalization, green operation initiatives, sustainable finance, and green financial products and services,” he said.

“This book should not be an end in itself,” shared Compas. “The hope is that more people integrate urban farming within their local communities. Together, we can build greener communities and help address the issue of food scarcity.”

“I am very thankful to Bank of China for supporting this advocacy,” said Compas. “I hope that this book inspires others to integrate urban farming within their local communities so that we can create greener communities in the cities of the Philippines.”

National Mental Health Week: Visit Globe's MakeITSafe.ph site and learn to protect children’s mental health online

As the Philippines marks National Mental Health Week, Globe is shedding light on the silent battle that the Filipino youth face as they spend more time online such as cyberbullying, which they face mostly by themselves.

To lend support to the embattled youth of today, Globe is undertaking a holistic effort to spread awareness on the negative effects of online threats on children’s mental health, equipping parents and guardians on how to protect children against these risks, and providing a platform where they may get expert help for free.

Globe and KonsultaMD have partnered to offer one free session with a mental health professional for children, their parents, and guardians who may have been affected by cyberbullying. It can be redeemed with the code MAKEITSAFEPH on the KonsultaMD app.

At the same time, Globe equips parents and guardians with the tools to protect the mental health of their children through its online safety platform https://www.makeitsafe.ph/.

The site, which features the A to Zs of cyberbullying glossary, decodes for parents and guardians current Internet emoji slang as a way of equipping them to be vigilant against signs of cyberbullying and other online threats. For instance, parents may not be aware that a combination of the smirking face and nail polish emojis means “I’m better than you.” A fairy emoji, meanwhile, means something really nasty is about to be said in an online chat.

The site is also available in chatbot form through Globe Bridging Communities. It has been visited over 30,400 times since it launched in mid-July.

Globe has also partnered with popular Facebook parenting communities Glam-o-Mamas and Usapang Nanay to bring important discussions on child online safety and responsibility, digital wellness and mental health straight to parents.

“Globe is working to make the digital space safe for Filipinos by espousing Tech4Good. We urge parents and guardians to be better digital protectors of their children by teaching online safety and responsibility,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Many are unaware of the worsening situation in select parts of the Philippines where about 60% to 80% of children aged 12 to 16 have experienced cyber violence, according to a 2015 study by Stairway Foundation. A third of these deplorable acts are in the form of verbal abuse over the internet or on mobile while the rest involves sexual messages.

According to KonsultaMD psychologist Dr. Mec Perez, cyberbullying occurs in various forms. It includes rude and hateful memes and comments, rumors that cause pain and embarrassment, threats of physical harm and exposure of private content and information, and acts that push people to commit suicide.

Since such incidents can create lasting emotional and psychological scars, Globe stressed that teaching online safety and responsibility must start at home, especially with the popularity of social media in the Philippines, where there are an estimated 92 million users as of January this year.

Parents have to prepare their children and strengthen them mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to avoid cyberbullying and learn to react positively if it happens.

At Globe and KonsultaMD’s recent “The Family as the Safety Net” webinar, KonsultaMD Counselor and Psychologist Dr. Francine Bofil said that cyberbullying can result in low self-esteem, which in turn leads to unhappiness and a more withdrawn personality. Victims may also become unmotivated and even think of self-harm.

“Nakakabahala na as parents, ginagawa natin ang lahat para maprotektahan ang ating mga anak pero hindi natin sila napoprotektahan sa mga online dangers na ito,” broadcast journalist Niña Corpuz lamented during a recent online safety webinar organized by Globe and KonsultaMD with Usapang Nanay.

To this, actor and dad Chuckie Dreyfus noted that while traditional parents may consider virtual reality as harmless, cyberbullying is real and affects how children grow up.

“Maraming magulang at caregivers ang hindi aware sa impact ng cyberbullying sa ating kabataan. Madalas binabale-wala pa natin. Patnubay po natin ang kailangan. Tayo po ang susi sa online safety ng kabataan. Listen to what our children are not saying,” he said.

Catriona, LoveYourself launches new HIV care center in Baguio City

(BAGUIO, Philippines) LoveYourself's global ambassador – Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, led the grand opening of "Balay Marvi," a community center offering holistic care to people to protect themselves against HIV.

Gray shared there's still a lot of stigma surrounding HIV, hence "What we want to do is to really empower the community." She highlighted the importance of having a safe space where people can access HIV and sexual health services in Baguio City.

On the vital role government plays, Gray also urged the local government units to continue supporting the advocacy and communities working for it because it's something the community urgently needs.
"Hopefully, our surrounding regions, who maybe don't have this type of community center can really look at Baguio City as one of the shining examples of how it can be replicated, how it can be done, and how the community can really be reached," Gray said.

Together with Gray, Baguio City District Representative Mark Go and City Councilor Levy Orcales also graced the launch ceremonies held on the 9th of October at Azalea Hotel and Residences. Both local officials expressed support.

Orcales shared, "We decided that there should be a localized version of our HIV and AIDS Law," recognizing a differentiated approach to combat the epidemic. He also said, "We are trying to convert all youth centers in the City of Baguio as safe spaces in the barangay levels," adding that there are 129 barangays in the City.

In his speech, Rep. Go offered assistance to thrust new laws at the national level that would ensure the effective implementation of HIV programs in the country. Meanwhile, the Department of Health-Cordillera Administrative Region's representative Cherrie Caluza also aired the agency's support for Balay Marvi and the community's efforts to address the HIV situation.

LoveYourself founder and executive director Ronivin Pagtakhan said, "We observed that many clients from northern provinces go down south in Metro Manila to seek care and support, and this is something we want to address — to provide northern Luzon clients access to sexual health services, and a community that is considered a safe space for them."

As one of the country's leading community organizations for differentiated sexual health services, LoveYourself offers innovations in the HIV advocacy, especially the country's first WHO pre-qualified HIV self-test kit, 'SelfCare.' The group also highlighted the availability of another layer of HIV prevention called Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily pill taken by an HIV-negative person to protect themselves against the virus.

Being a one-stop shop, Balay Marvi provides differentiated testing approaches, multiple prevention methods, and treatment, support, and care. Passers-by can also get free condoms and lube.

The Balay Marvi was named after its long-time supporter and partner, Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. (PSFI), Deputy Executive Director Marvi Trudeau. The first-ever LoveYourself Diamond Award was conferred to her for her unwavering support of the group and passion for helping the advocacy.

The community center also matches the arts and culture of Baguio with its design and a huge mural hand painted by LoveYourself volunteers.

It is also made possible thru the Global Fund PROTECTS project grant implemented by PSFI and LoveYourself, under the Champion Community Centers.

PROTECTS is the Global Fund HIV grant for 2021 to 2023 that focuses on scaling-up prevention and testing strategies employed by community-based organizations (CBOs), like LoveYourself and partner local government units to expand access points across the country and provide PrEP and HIV self-testing kit supplies. It also enhances the capacities of CBOs to ensure their effectiveness and sustainability in service provision and advocacy.

Located at Lopez Building, Room 303, Session Road, Baguio City, the center is open from Wednesday-Sunday from 12:00 NN – 7:00 PM. To avail of Balay Marvi's services, clients can set an appointment at www.loveyourself.ph.
