MTRCB suspends “It’s Showtime! for 12 airing days

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) issued today, 04 September 2023, its decision to suspend the live noontime program “It’s Showtime!” for twelve (12) airing days.

Viewers have lodged multiple complaints before the MTRCB concerning the show’s 25 July 2023 episode wherein the program’s hosts allegedly acted in an indecent manner during one of its segments, “Isip Bata.” The said case was referred to the MTRCB’s Hearing and Adjudication Committee which heard the case and required the respondents to submit their position papers, following a procedural process.

In accordance with the Presidential Decree (P.D.) No. 1986 (MTRCB Charter), the respondents may file one Motion for Reconsideration (MR) within fifteen (15) days after receipt of the decision. Should the Board’s Decision be adverse to the respondent’s MR, they may appeal to the Office of the President within fifteen (15) days from the receipt of the decision on the MR.

This is not the first time that a preventive suspension order was imposed on It’s Showtime. In 2010, the MTRCB imposed a 20-day preventive suspension on ABS-CBN’s daily variety program then called “Showtime.” In 2023 alone, the MTRCB has received multiple complaints which the Board has given due course.

Most recently, the Board issued two (2) additional warnings to the noontime show concerning the following cases:

Case no. 1: Inappropriate utterance of the word “G Spot” by hosts Jhong Hilario and Vice Ganda, during the 24 January 2023 episode of “It’s Showtime!” in violation of Section 2 (B), Chapter IV of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Presidential Decree (P.D.) No. 1986.

Decision: The Board found the Respondents (ABS-CBN Corporation Broadcasting Network [ABS-CBN], ZOE Broadcasting Network, Inc. [ZBNI] and TV 5 Network, Inc.) remiss in the performance of their respective functions and duties required under the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of P.D. No. 1986, specifically Section 2 (B) Chapter IV thereof, and are admonished to refrain from making any utterances of similar nature for the same will be dealt more severely.

Case no. 2: Inappropriate utterance of the word “Tinggil” by host Vhong Navarro, during the 03 June 2023 episode of “It’s Showtime!” in violation of Section 2 (B), Chapter IV of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of P.D. No. 1986.

Decision: Derelict in the performance of their respective functions and duties under the IRR of P.D. No. 1986, Respondents (ABS-CBN and ZBNI) were sternly warned by the Board that a similar utterance will be dealt with more severely.

At present, the noontime show has duly submitted their MRs for the above-mentioned cases which are currently pending with the MTRCB’s Adjudication Committee.

*Prior Warnings*

It may also be recalled that the noontime show received prior warnings from the Board in relation to the utterance of the word “Pek Pek Shorts” in the 09 January 2023 episode of the show and the indecent attire and performance of Kim Duenas in the “Girl on Fire” segment aired on 14 February 2023, in both cases, the Respondents were admonished that similar violations shall be dealt with more severely.

*Dismissed Complaints due to lack of Merit*

Apart from these, the MTRCB has received multiple complaints regarding the noontime show, which the Board dismissed in the spirit of fairness and equity, such as (1) Complaints regarding the “Rampanalo” segment money game where hosts were paired together to catch play money using their lips; (2) Complaints regarding the allegedly suggestive “macho” dancing in one of the show’s segments; (3) Complaints regarding the wardrobe malfunctions or “nip slips” of one of the performers, to which MTRCB issued a memorandum urging stakeholders to exercise prudence in securing their talents’ clothing during performances; and (4) Complaints of alleged inappropriate wearing of the Barong Tagalog of one of the Hosts, to name a few.

The MTRCB only adjudicates cases which, to the Board’s judgment, have basis in law and its mandate, P.D. No. 1986.

Calm-A-Lung for a Healthier Life this Lung Month

OMRON promotes stress-free nebulization with its clinically validated at-home nebulizers.
Lungs do more than just help us breathe. They work hard to provide the body with oxygen and protect it from harmful substances through coughing or sneezing. By keeping the lungs strong and healthy, we keep the body strong and healthy as well, enabling us to enjoy and live our life to the fullest.

It’s alarming to see that many take their lungs for granted and forget to care for them. Unhealthy habits or wrong lifestyle choices such as smoking can have a grave impact on the health of our lungs.

Focusing on the risks of stress, when not managed properly, stress can worsen the condition of those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, two respiratory disorders that are common worldwide and in the Philippines. Stressful situations prompt the body to release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which cause rapid breathing. This can make breathing even more difficult for a person suffering from COPD or asthma and can cause them to panic. Between managing the symptoms of both conditions and dealing with daily responsibilities and commitments, stress will only exacerbate a patient’s condition.

August is National Lung Month, OMRON Healthcare, one of the most trusted brands for clinically proven medical equipment among Filipinos, hopes to emphasize the importance of taking care of our lungs properly and urge Filipinos to make this an utmost priority. OMRON offers innovative tools to help patients with respiratory diseases rise above COPD and asthma and manage their symptoms better for an improved quality of life.

Breathe with ease at home

COPD, a respiratory disease caused by smoking tobacco, remains the third leading cause of death worldwide, according to the WHO. It currently ranks as the seventh leading cause of poor health worldwide as measured by disability-adjusted life years. In the Philippines, where smoking is prevalent, COPD is among the top 10 causes of mortality.[1]

Asthma is another common health challenge for many Filipinos, affecting approximately 11 million or 1 out of 10 Filipinos, according to the Global Asthma Report. Sadly, 98 percent of Filipino asthma patients do not have access to proper treatment.[2]

Knowing how to manage the symptoms of COPD and asthma makes a positive difference in the quality of life of patients. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating healthier, staying active, and getting enough sleep will certainly make a significant improvement in one’s health.

Home health management can help a lot. Home nebulization therapy is a safe and effective treatment for patients with COPD or severe asthma. It has the same effect as oral medication but with a much lower and more manageable dosage.[3] Here, the patient inhales the mist and the medicine is then delivered directly to the organ where it is most needed for a much more immediate relief for the patient.[4]

Calm-A-Lung and nebulize at home and on the go

An advocate for accessible health management and solutions, OMRON launches its Calm-A-Lung campaign this National Lung Month to make quality health treatment more accessible to Filipinos who need it most.

Getting respiratory relief in one’s home brings unparalleled comfort and puts the patients’ minds at ease. With the OMRON Compressor Nebulizer or NE-C801, every nebulization experience will feel like a breeze. This compact and lightweight nebulizer is the smallest and most convenient tabletop nebulizer and is designed for easy setup and use. The NE-C801 is powered by CompAir, which provides highly efficient nebulization and administers medication as effectively as other models three times its size. It produces small particles the size of MMAD 3µm so that the medicine can flow smoothly and easily all the way to the user’s lower airway.

Asthma attacks can happen anytime and anywhere. This is what makes the condition so stressful, especially for children and their parents. Whether at home or on the road, unforeseen episodes of asthma attacks take away the fun and happy mood of the day.

With the OMRON NE-U100 or Mesh Nebulizer, patients can take the medication and get the respiratory relief they need anywhere and anytime. This portable nebulizer is also battery-operated so users don’t have to worry about finding a power outlet to use it. With its pocket-sized design, users can take it anywhere and use it in whatever position they are in, even when they’re lying down, without causing any spills.

Nebulizers have unique and specific features designed to address different patients’ needs. That is why it is best to choose the nebulizer that is more suited to the condition of the user and the nature of their ailment or symptoms.

This National Lung Month, let’s start making smarter choices to improve our lung health, including managing our stress and finding the right tools to ease any respiratory challenge. OMRON’s home nebulizers not only make the nebulizing process a little more stress-free and comfortable but also help in effectively managing the symptoms of respiratory diseases, giving our lungs the love and care they deserve.

Takeda Healthcare Philippines releases Access to Medicines Summit Catalogue, identifies key areas to improve access to healthcare

Biopharmaceutical leader Takeda Healthcare Philippines Inc. (“Takeda Philippines”), together with its partners, recently released a Catalogue of Partnership Opportunities as part of its commitment to support the government in strengthening the Philippine healthcare system. Developed with insights and expertise gathered from their Access to Medicines summit held last October 11-12, 2022, in Manila, Philippines, the catalogue aims to provide various stakeholders ideas on possible collaborations between public and private entities, and opportunities to improve access to medicines for Filipinos.
Takeda Philippines turns over copies of the Catalogue of Partnership Opportunities to
Department of Health Undersecretary Maria Francia M. Laxamana

The Access to Medicines Summit 2022 themed "Onward to a Transformed Healthcare System by 2030," brought together a diverse range of stakeholders guided by the vision for a sustained access to quality and affordable medicines and vaccines and reduced out-of-pocket health spending aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3.8 and the Universal Healthcare (UHC) Act.

Based on data from state-owned Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) in 2022, Filipinos still shoulder out-of-pocket expenditure ranging from 34 to 44.7 percent1. The elderly, women, rural and poor Filipinos are more likely to spend more.

"The Catalogue of Partnership Opportunities is an invaluable resource for stakeholders from different sectors, advocating for collaboration and innovation,” Loreann Villanueva, Country Manager of Takeda Healthcare Philippines shared. “At Takeda Healthcare Philippines, we believe in the power of partnerships to improve access to medicines and enhance the overall health and well-being of Filipinos. Ensuring that quality healthcare services reach every individual in the country requires collective efforts from the public and private sectors. In the area of cancer management, for example, we have made efforts to implement unique patient assistance programs that consider the patient’s capacity to pay, in collaboration with their healthcare providers. This allows us to provide Filipino patients with broader access to innovative therapies for blood cancers such as lymphoma and multiple myeloma."

The Catalogue of Partnership Opportunities encapsulates the combined aspirations, success stories and insights shared by the attendees of the summit. It serves as a comprehensive resource that captures the ideas of stakeholders who were physically present at the event, as well as those whose perspectives were represented by their organizations.

“The health of our country is not just about being free of certain illnesses alone, but it’s about total health services and wellness, and improved quality of life,” Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. of the Department of Interior and Local Government shared. Abalos highlighted the importance of working with the Local Government Units to improve access to medicines and achieve universal healthcare in the country.

“This partnership helps to identify major and critical barriers to medicine access,” Val Ulep, Senior Research Fellow of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) said. “Through this collaboration, we are also able to come up with innovative ways on how to overcome these setbacks.”

The catalogue identified eight key areas for partnership opportunities: access programs, capacity building, data management, digitalization, health information management and communication, policy and governance, supply chain management, and sustainable health financing.

“The goal is to make the catalogue accessible to all and raise awareness about the multitude of partnership opportunities available to drive the transformation of the Philippine healthcare system by 2030. We believe that the best way to ensure patients have timely access to medicines is by building trusted, effective and lasting local partnerships. By strengthening health systems together, we can better support the patient journey through health promotion and prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care,” added Villanueva.

While current health-related interventions and programs are in place, the catalogue highlights the untapped potential for collaboration that can further enhance access to medicines and other health technologies. Anchored by Takeda’s patient-first approach with their partners collectively, they aspire to combine resources, expertise, responsibilities, leadership, and coordination to address access barriers and strengthen local standards of care.

The Access to Medicines Summit 2022 participants includes representatives from the Department of Health, Department of Trade, and Industry, Department of the Interior and Local Government, healthcare professional societies, patient organizations, academia, financing institutions, NGOs and more. The summit is also in collaboration with RiseAboveNow Business Consulting as co-convenor and technical partner.

Read the Access to Medicines White Paper to learn more about the multi-stakeholder partnership and how it aims to improve medicine access in the Philippines.
