Pru Life UK wins Four Golden Arrow award for corporate governance excellence

Strengthening leadership in the insurance sector by upholding regulatory standards

Demonstrating its steadfast commitment to transparency, accountability, and regulatory compliance, Pru Life UK received the coveted Four Golden Arrow award from the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) at the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS) Golden Arrow Awards recognition ceremony held on 19 September in Pasay City. The leading life insurer earned 119 points in the 2023 ACGS assessment, a marked improvement from the company’s scores in previous years.

In photo: Atty. Paul Mandal, Pru Life UK Senior Vice President & Chief Legal, Government Relations, and Sustainability Officer (1st from right), together with independent board member Ida Tiongson (3rd from left), received the four Golden Arrows recognition from the Institute of Corporate Directors during the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard Golden Arrow Awards.

To encourage companies to exceed local regulatory requirements and adopt higher standards of corporate governance, the ACGS evaluates companies on key governance aspects, including shareholder rights, fair treatment, stakeholder engagement, transparency, accountability, and the effectiveness of the board, while benchmarking against international best practices.

Accepting the award for the company is Chief Legal, Government Relations, and Sustainability Officer, Atty. Paul Mandal, who called the recognition “a proud moment” for Pru Life UK.

“[This recognition] reflects our unwavering commitment to corporate governance,” Atty. Mandal explained. “As we continue to align with regulatory standards, we are excited to lead the way in promoting transparency and inclusivity in the Philippine insurance sector, ensuring we deliver the best possible service to our customers,” he added.

Additionally, Pru Life UK strives to make insurance more inclusive by constantly innovating and developing new products to serve the financial protection needs of all Filipinos. A new area that the company is currently exploring is Takaful or Islamic insurance, which is aligned with the priorities of the Insurance Commission (IC) and the national government. Pru Life UK targets to become the first insurer to launch Takaful in the country, reinforcing its commitment to address the diverse needs of Muslim and non-Muslim Filipinos alike.

Pru Life UK has been a consistent Golden Arrow awardee for eight consecutive years. This achievement underscores the company’s proactive response to evolving regulatory standards set by the IC.

As Pru Life UK celebrates this recognition, the company reaffirms its pledge to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance and regulatory compliance, ensuring it remains a trusted and responsible partner for its policyholders, shareholders, and the communities it serves.

Building Filipino resilience through health and financial security

In a country often impacted by natural disasters, resilience has become a way of life. These days, however, having a resilient mindset is not enough as having the right mitigation and adaptation tools can spell a difference in one’s ability to bounce back from adversity.

Health protection ensures access to essential medical treatments without financial stress, which is crucial after natural disasters when health risks, like infectious diseases, often arise.

Financial security provides the necessary support to manage unexpected expenses, allowing families to focus on recovery.

“Building resilience involves more than having a resilient mindset; it’s about being prepared and equipped with sufficient instruments to overcome life’s difficulties, including health and financial challenges. Having a proactive mindset can help families cope better with setbacks,” shares Maricel Maricel Estavillo, Pru Life UK’s Vice President for Government Relations & Sustainability.

In support of this advocacy to adopt a proactive approach, Pru Life UK has been growing its pool of affordable and accessible life insurance products designed to reduce financial burden and enhance health protection during times of crisis and more so during natural disasters or disease outbreaks:

PRUDengue MedCare and PRUDengue MedCare Pro provide financial assistance upon dengue diagnosis.

PRUMedCare – Select Infectious Diseases offers broader coverage, including protection against a range of infectious diseases namely Dengue, Typhoid, Measles, and Malaria.

PRUWellness and PRUShield both provide hospitalisation coverage. PRUWellness covers dread diseases, surgical expenses, and death of the life insured. On the other hand, PRUShield covers injuries, illnesses, and death.

PRUPersonal Accident, a yearly renewable insurance, provides financial support in the event of injury or death due to unforeseen events.

“Shaping a fully prepared society that embraces a new approach to resilience requires collective effort. Pru Life UK contributes through simple and accessible insurance solutions to provide financial protection for many Filipino families,” shared Garen Dee, Pru Life UK’s Chief Product Officer.

Championing community-based financial education

Beyond making affordable health and life insurance products available, Pru Life UK educates communities on the importance of financial preparedness and security.

In 2023, Pru Life UK and Prudence Foundation partnered with the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation for Project Padayon Bantayan Island, Cebu. The project aimed to help uplift lives through training and development programmes focused on health, employment, and disaster preparedness.

Pru Life UK employees and agent volunteers helped conduct community education sessions on financial management, empowerment of micro, small, and medium enterprises, employment, family health and nutrition, women's health, disaster risk preparedness and management, and climate change resilience.

Community-based climate and financial education sessions were also conducted in Lian, Batangas for women farmers during the Wais sa Pera si Juana financial literacy session; Taytay, Palawan for mothers; and Mandaluyong city for the beneficiaries of its Solo Parent programme.

"These learning sessions are part of our commitment to being the most trusted partner and protector of Filipino families. We especially want to help families from disadvantaged backgrounds better manage their finances to build long-term resilience,” Estavillo further shares.

As communities across the Philippines continue to face and recover from various challenges, resilience is not just about having the mindset to endure hardships but also about being able to recover fast and move forward. This strength is built through preparation, education, health protection, and financial security that can empower Filipinos to better navigate adversity and emerge stronger.

Prudence Foundation inks partnership with PH Red Cross to strengthen first-aid awareness

In conjunction with the celebration of World First Aid Day 2018, Prudence Foundation, the community investment arm of Prudential in Asia, has established a partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) to strengthen SAFE STEPS First Aid awareness in the country.

From left: SAFE STEPS First Aid Ambassador Dr. Maria Guevarra, Prudence Foundation Director Justin Chang, Pru Life UK Chief Financial Officer Lee Longa, PRC OIC Secretary General Elizabeth Zavalla, PRC Assistant Secretary General Dr. Zenaida Beltejar, PRC Safety Services Unit Manager Von Ong

Hosted by PRC, this year’s World First Aid Day celebration in the Philippines focuses on the enhancement of public awareness of the importance of first aid skills in relation to road accidents. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), injuries claimed 4.9 million lives in 2016, 29% of which were due to road traffic injuries.

A regionally implemented program, SAFE STEPS First Aid aims to contribute to lowering these statistics by providing people with fundamental first aid information and knowledge, enabling them to be less vulnerable in an emergency situation and help others in need. The program consists of videos, safety cards, posters, and other educational materials covering basic first aid topics, including burns, broken bones, choking, CPR, severe bleeding, and stroke. The SAFE STEPS program also includes SAFE STEPS Road Safety which provides similar materials covering key road safety topics to help the public be safer on the roads.

In the Philippines, the partnership with PRC will boost SAFE STEPS First Aid’s education materials reach among Filipinos as the educational materials will be distributed locally in PRC’s offices, blood centers, website, social media pages, and its soon-to-be-relaunched first aid mobile app.

Prudence Foundation Executive Director Marc Fancy said, “It is with great pleasure we are able to announce on World First Aid Day our partnership with the Philippine Red Cross to provide SAFE STEPS First Aid’s life-saving information to as many Filipinos as possible. Prudence Foundation aims to secure the future of Asian communities and having the Philippine Red Cross as a partner – together with the strong support from Pru Life UK – helps ensure that together we can achieve this.”

Filipino-American humanitarian Dr. Maria Guevarra, one of the ambassadors for SAFE STEPS First Aid, graced the event and shared her experience doing humanitarian work and advocating first aid awareness.

“In my line of work, I’ve witnessed how first aid can be the difference between life and death. First aid is a vital life-saving tool – we will never know when we will be able to put the knowledge into action, but when we do, we can save lives,” she shared. “This is why I am very excited for the partnership to touch more lives and make a difference in the Philippines through SAFE STEPS First Aid.”

Launched in 2017, SAFE STEPS First Aid was developed in partnership with IFRC and National Geographic.

The program builds upon the successful SAFE STEPS Natural Disasters and SAFE STEPS Road Safety programs launched by Prudence Foundation in May 2014 and February 2016 respectively with the aim to promote awareness of life-threatening issues in the hope of saving lives and building more resilient communities.

SAFE STEPS reaches 250 million people across the region every day through partnerships with the private sector, governments and humanitarian organizations.

The collected bags were donated to the National Blood Bank, which seeks to ensure a sufficient supply of safe blood needed for Red Cross' disaster and emergency response operations.
Held twice a year annually since 2016, the participation of Pru Life UK employees in the blood donation drive takes root from the Company’s initiative to promote the spirit of volunteerism within the organization through its employee-volunteer program, PRU It Forward. Since then, Pru Life UK has expanded its reach to over 130 branches in the Philippines, with the biggest life agency force of more than 20,000 licensed agents and has emerged as one of the top five life insurers. Pru Life UK holds headquarters in Uptown Bonifacio, Taguig City.

Write your life the right way with DNA analysis - Pru Life UK promotes a scientific approach to health and wellness

Filipinos are deeply superstitious. Many still believe that a pregnant woman’s cravings (paglilihi) affect her child’s development. Some do not wash their hands after hours of rigorous work to avoid pasma. Some go as far as trusting an albularyo or even a manghuhula for seeking health remedies or advice.

In Pru Life UK’s newest television commercial which you can watch athttps://youtu.be/pkv8ZUJHXYc, a fortune teller reveals a man’s fate through palm reading, tarot cards, and a crystal ball. After finding out his future, she gets scared and runs away, leaving the poor man alone and clueless. Would you trust someone like that with your future?
“When it comes to our health, we cannot take chances with unverified sources and unscientific claims,” says Allan Tumbaga, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Pru Life UK. “Pru Life UK’s latest insuravest plan, the myDNA Pro Bundle, offers customers security and confidence due to advanced science and innovative insurance solutions. Through this product, people can set a vision and take charge of their lives.”
Science identifies your body’s unique needs
Luckily today, you can rely on science-based technologies such as myDNA Pro to understand how your body responds to lifestyle, food choices, and certain chemicals. For instance, if the results show that your body requires help to absorb calcium, you can follow a personalized diet or wellness program based on your own biology.
Through the myDNA Pro Program, you can also identify your predisposition to the “three highs” of health risks—type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol—using your DNA. However, having genes related to these illnesses does not mean that you are sick or that you cannot escape these conditions. By knowing your DNA, you can create an action plan to mitigate the development of these illnesses.
Author your future with myDNA Pro
Pru Life UK’s myDNA Pro Bundle will give you detailed knowledge about your body, so that you can make the right choices when it comes to your future. The package combines financial protection through Pru Life UK’s insuravest or investment-linked life insurance solutions with myDNA Pro Program, a health and wellness program that provides comprehensive genetic testing to assess your medical risks and opportunities. It will also guide you towards having a healthy lifestyle through scientific DNA-based fitness and wellness recommendations, as well as offer a better alternative to trendy programs or superstitious beliefs.

Liza Soberano, the new face of Pru Life UK : Decoding the secrets of your identity - A lowdown on commercial DNA analysis

Liza Soberano, the new face of Pru Life UK, also took the scientific and personalized approach to becoming her best self, using myDNA Pro to guide her diet and workout plans.

DNA—or Deoxyribonucleic acid, the long molecule that contains our genetic code

Pru Life UK brought the myDNA Pro Program to the Philippines to give their clients total life, wealth and health protection in one product that goes beyond regular exercise and diet. A component of Pru Life UK’s myDNA Pro Bundle, the program is bundled with the company’s eligible insuravest or investment-linked life insurance products: PRUlink assurance account plus, PRUlink exact protector, and PRUlink elite protector. The package also provides coverages for disability, accident, hospitalization, and critical illness.

Humans are innately curious and it’s part of our nature to want to know more about ourselves. As we become more introspective, we explore wider sources of self-discovery. Today, horoscopes and personality quizzes are not enough to give us a bigger picture of our identity.

If you’re itching to know more about yourself, go beyond finding out if you’re a Metal or Fire Dragon, or how Mercury in Retrograde affects your star sign. More than learning about your personality, why not look into your biology to understand the essence of your identity? The answer to your questions is found in three letters: DNA.

Unraveling the strands of your identity

We all know about DNA—or Deoxyribonucleic acid, the long molecule that contains our genetic code—from school. Similar to an instruction manual, it dictates how we are built, how we grow, and how we develop.

Since last year, consumer DNA tests have become more popular than ever. The number of people who have had their DNA analyzed with at-home consumer kits exceeds more than 12 million, according to global industry estimates. Popular genealogy tests such as AncestryDNA and 23andMe Review give an individual’s genealogy profile, detailing a person’s ethnicity and origins. These services have become a big hit by revealing who we are at our very core.

Commercial DNA analysis is the next big thing in personal assessment. But more than telling your ancestry and details of your past, this innovation gives information that will help with your present life and give you cues on how you can optimize your future. Some DNA analysis services can tell you which nutrients or what diet work best for your genetic makeup, for example. This study of genetics and how it affects nutrition is called nutrigenomics.

DNA discovery starts at home

Services like the myDNA Pro Program use nutrigenomics to help you discover how you respond to food based on your genetic profile. This gives you an idea of why a popular diet works for your friend but not for you, or why your sibling, who barely does any exercise, can be skinny while you have to consistently workout just to keep flabs at bay.

The myDNA Pro Program analyzes genetic variations that affect individual nutritional needs, sensitivity to certain nutrients, and fitness traits. Specifically, it can detect factors such sensitivity to alcohol, gluten, or caffeine; appetite control; and injury risk. It also provides your ideal method of preventing diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The myDNA Pro Program gives you a picture of your general well-being and provides tailored advice that leads you to a healthier life.

DNA analysis starts with a simple saliva swab using the sampling kit. The sample is sent to Prenetics, the leading genetic and digital health testing company in Southeast Asia, where a team of scientists and registered dieticians decode your genetic makeup. After the analysis, the user receives the following within 10 business days -- (1) a detailed and personalized health risk and nutrigenomics reports; and (2) an exclusive 12-month access to the myDNA Pro mobile app where the user can set health goals, find recommendations based on his DNA, record his food and calorie-intake through a photo-food diary, chat-on-demand with a health coach, and follow a 16-week lifestyle intervention program.

Achieving your best self with total health and protection

The myDNA Pro Program was introduced locally on April 19 by British life insurer Pru Life UK.

Health and fitness personalities like The Sexy Chef co-founder Rachel Alejandro, and fitness coach Bok Santos attended the launch to talk about the practical applications of the myDNA Pro Program.

British life insurer Pru Life UK, a subsidiary of international finance services group Prudential plc, was conferred the Patron of Literature Award by the Philippines Graphic for being an advocate of Philippine literature through the Nick Joaquin Literary Awards (NJLA).

Pru Life UK co-presented the NJLA for six consecutive years in line with the Company’s advocacy to promote literacy and education in the country, helping lay strong foundations for Filipinos to realize their full potential.

The 2017 NJLA paid homage to the 100th birth anniversary of National Artist Nick Joaquin, the Philippines Graphic’s first editor-in-chief after it was relaunched in 1990. The awards night also featured the presentation of the Guardian of the National Memory Award to four living National Artists for Literature: F. Sionil Jose, Virgilio Almario, Bienvenido Lumbera, and Cirilo Bautista, for their role in promoting Filipino values and culture through the written word.

Organized by the Philippines Graphic, the longest running newsweekly and literary magazine in the country, the NJLA is held annually to recognize the best stories published in the magazine during the year.

Pru Life UK’s support to NJLA is in line with its community initiatives which are focused on three key pillars: children, education, and disaster preparedness and recovery. The Company is committed to giving back to the community, which it has been doing for more than 20 years in the Philippines.

In 1996, the Insurance Commission granted the British subsidiary the license to operate and sell life insurance products in the country. Since then, Pru Life UK has expanded its reach to over 130 branches in the Philippines, with the biggest life agency force at more than 18,000 licensed agents, and has emerged as one of the top five life insurers. Pru Life UK holds headquarters in Uptown Bonifacio, Taguig City.
