PTT plants 10k trees in 3 months and expects to breach 3-year target

“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second-best time is now.” -  (Proverb)

“Gas Up for a Tree”, PTT’s corporate social responsibility project that aims to reforest 50 hectares of denuded forest, the ancestral lands of the Magbukun tribe within the Bataan National Park (BNP), had planted 10,000 trees and expects more trees to grow.

Barely three months after its first tree-planting activity, PTT Philippines Corp.'s environmental campaign has achieved its goal to plant 10,000 trees for this year with the third leg of its “Gas Up for a Tree” planting activity Friday at the denuded portion of the Bataan Natural Park (BNP) in Morong town.

PTT president and chief executive officer Wisarn Chawalitanon led volunteers and various sectoral leaders in the tree-planting activity, reaching the targeted 10,000 trees for this year.

“We didn’t expect to achieve our target as this early. And we owe it to all volunteers, partners and supporters,” Chawalitanon said. “With the turnout, we expect that we could breach our 30,000 trees target by year 2015.”

“Gas Up for a Tree” is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project of PTT through PTT Philippines Foundation, Inc. (PTTPFI) under its president Paul Patricio Senador. The Foundation’s thrust is focused on the environment protection and preservation, community development, educational and sports development, and outreach program.

The Foundation launched the tree planting project in May this year and conducted the first tree-planting activity in late June and was immediately followed by the second leg of the activity in August.

“We are fortunate enough to get an active support from government and non-governmental organizations as well as those coming from the academe, the church, and other partners from the private sector,” Chawalitanon said.

“We cannot claim credit for this success. It is the cause or our call to stand for the environment per se that led these people to support this project. It shows as well the level of public awareness on how each one of us should get our acts together to protect Mother Earth,” he averred.

Environment Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio, former BCDA chairman Felicito Payumo and Col. Jeff Tamayo of Philippine Olympic Committee were among those who participated in the third leg of tree-planting activity.

The tree-planting activity also coincided with the tribal games organized by the POC.

Aetas from Magbukun Tribe serve as PTT’s partner in taking care of the trees planted in the area. More than 100 Aeta families from Magbukun tribe were given livelihood as managers of a nursery of seedlings and caretaker of the trees that have been planted.

Sec. Neric Acosta, from the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Environmental Protection (OPAEP), earlier  lauded this environmental activity of PTT “for taking action on the reforestation of the BNP.”

Acosta  took part in the first two treeplanting activities. “The OPAEP was very honored to have taken part in this very inspiring initiative to heighten not only awareness of ecosystems’ protection but in the greater convergence of private and public engagement for conservation and sustainable development,” he said during the tree planting event.

According to Chawalitanon, PTT is set to embark on another environmental campaign next year, the details of which he said would be announced soon.

PTT Philippines is the local subsidiary of Thailand’s biggest oil company, the PTT Public Company Limited that was ranked 81st in Top 500 Corporations in Fortune’s Global 500 for 2013.

Jardine Home Pest Solutions expands product distribution nationwide

MORE homeowners now have access to effective, quality, and safe products that defend their home against disease-carrying pests, thanks to the nationwide distribution expansion of Jardine Home Pest Solutions.

Jardine Distribution, Inc. (JDI), markets and distributes products that are proven to be effective against rats and mice; roaches, mosquitoes, and other flying insect pests. Best of all, these products are safe to use at home and do not compromise health and the environment.

“Pests in the home represent a threat to the health of the entire family. Some pests are carriers of serious diseases that can even be fatal, as in the case of dengue fever that is spread by the bite of the dengue virus-carrying mosquito. Mice and rats also cause illness while roaches spread bacteria.

“Unfortunately, these pests easily make their nests in our homes. When we see just one rat or one cockroach, it means there could be dozens of them in our house, hidden from sight. Parents are understandably concerned for the entire family’s health and so they are looking for solutions that will help them get rid of these dangerous pests,” said Peachy C. Tiu, Marketing Manager of Jardine Distribution, Inc.

While there are several pest-control solutions in the market, an important consideration is safety. Homeowners need to carefully choose the best pest control products that offer reliable pest control and health safety as well.

According to Edwin Hernandez, President and General Manager of Jardine Distribution, Inc., Jardine Home Pest Solutions products are designed to minimize the danger to family members while still being effective against pests.

“Safety is a top priority in our home pest products. When used regularly and properly according to the directions on their labels, Jardine Home Pest Solutions will eliminate home’s pest problems while also protecting the health of family members. With the expansion on the distribution of our Home Pest Solutions, we are happy that more households will enjoy the protection and safety it provides,” said Hernandez.

The quality and safety of Jardine Home Pest Solutions are assured by the partnership between JDI and leading manufacturers such as Sumitomo Chemicals, the leading Japanese chemical company, and Syngenta.

Jardine Home Pest Solutions by JDI include Klerat Single Feed Rodenticide; Optigard Roach and Ant Bait; and ZAP aerosol insecticide which comes in multi-insect, cockroach, and mosquito killer variants.

Jardine Home Pest Solutions are now available in Rustan's Supermarkets, Wellcome Supermarket, and Shopwise SuperCenters. These products are also available in Ace, Citi and Wilcon Hardwares and selected supermarkets, pharmacies and groceries in Cebu, such as Gaisano Grand, Gaisano Country Mall, Prince Warehouse, White Gold, Rose Pharmacy, and others.

DOTC Concludes successful Philippine Transit App Challenge

Top-winning app lets commuters share traffic, weather info, events and others.

The Department of Transportation and Communication’s (DOTC) Philippine Transit App Challenge, the first in Southeast Asia, was a resounding success, drawing participants from as far as Cebu for a three-month hack-at-home competition to develop an app that will ease commuting in the megacities of Cebu and Metro Manila.

At the culminating event held last 14 October at the GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center Auditorium in UP-Diliman, competition finalists got to demonstrate how their apps worked and the various benefits each offered.

Transport Secretary Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya thanked the developers for sharing their talent in helping provide tools to the commuting public for navigating the two giant metros.

“I commend all of the participants to our App Challenge, especially the finalists who are here tonight, for spending the last three months being a part of the solution to one of our country’s toughest problems,” he said.

Trip Barker, a community-based trip planner for mass transit systems through which users can share real-time weather, traffic, and events with their community, won the Best App Award and P100,000.00 plus a nomination to the 2014 Mobile Premier Awards at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain next February.

There were also three special award winners, each with a P50,000.00 prize.

Sakay.ph, a web- and SMS-based app that gives commuters printable transit directions for jeepneys, buses, and trains in Metro Manila, took the Open Community Award.

The Transport Award went to Transit.com.ph for its app that provides Cebu City commuters with route-planning tools as well as a route editor for city planners and contributors.

Manila Train Guide, a trip-planning app for Metro Manila’s railways, which highlights nearby places of interest, won the Inclusive Technology Award.

Meanwhile, Rklamo, an app that provides a tipping mechanism via SMS for PUV drivers with good behavior was the Voter’s Choice and received P 30,000.00.

The Philippine Transit App Challenge, which was launched by the DOTC alongside the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Cebu City Government in early July, netted 17 entries from which 10 finalists were chosen

FOX premieres three highly anticipated US Blockbuster series on October 19!

October is a huge month for FOX, as a monumental event in television will be exploding on screens all over the Philippines and Asia on the 19th. On October 19, 2013, FOX will be broadcasting the Philippine and Asian premiere of Season 4 ofThe Walking Dead at 8:55 PM, followed by the premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.and Sleepy Hollow at 9:50 PM and 10:45 PM, respectively.

The three shows are among the most highly anticipated series in the US, each owning a distinct fan base as TV adaptations of successful comic book and movie franchises.

The Walking Dead which FOX International Channels identified at script level and owns the global rights for, is based on a comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, and has had a strong viewership over its last three seasons, garnering 12.4 million viewers for its Season 3 finale and reigns the most watched series in PayTV history.

Meanwhile, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is created by Joss Whedon, director of Marvel’sThe Avengers, along with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and the TV series is a spin-off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which includes the Iron Man movies, Thor andCaptain America. The series chronicles the experiences of Agent Phil Coulson, from The Avengers (the highest-grossing film of 2012), as he puts together a team under the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D.) that encounters and profiles superhumans in the world. It expands the Marvel universe with new characters and adventures, portraying ordinary people put in extraordinary circumstances and placed smack dab in the middle of the epic battle between good and evil.

Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson, a character loved by hardcore Marvel fans as well as fans of The Avengers. Gregg is joined by Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge, who play Coulson’s fellow agents in S.H.I.E.L.D. Together, the agents discover new superheroes and realize that not all of them are good. Produced by Disney and Marvel, the series promises the high-level action and storytelling for which the films have been highly acclaimed and loved by viewers around the world over the years.

Sleepy Hollow is a modern-day retelling of the American short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, which has been depicted and referenced many times in pop culture, such as in Disney’s cartoon version in 1949 and Tim Burton’s 1999 crime film Sleepy Hollow in 1999. The 2013 TV series tells of how Ichabod Crane dies in 1781 after he kills the Headless Horseman, but mysteriously awakens again in 2013 to find that the Horseman is again wreaking havoc in the town of Sleepy Hollow. He partners with Lt. Abbie Mills to stop the evil being from murdering more people and sparking the return of dark, supernatural forces to the earth. Sleepy Hollow premiered on September 16, 2013 in the US and scored a massive 10 million viewers, which bodes well for the Philippine and Asian premiere on October 19.

Leading up to the Season 4 premiere of the hit show The Walking Dead, FOX will also be treating die-hard fans to a four-day channel takeover, Countdown To The Zombie Apocalypse. Starting on October 15 at 11:40 PM until October 19 at 8:55 PM, FOX is going to show all three seasons of The Walking Dead non-stop right up until the Season 4 premiere, giving the ultimate chance for FOX viewers to catch up with the latest developments in the series.

October 19 is the night to stay glued to FOX as it shows not one but three long-awaited series premieres, starting at 8:55 PM with The Walking Dead Season 4, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at 9:50 PM, and Sleepy Hollow at 10:45 PM.
