DepEd commends public school teachers for orderly, peaceful elections

Department of Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC
Department of Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC in a press briefing commended the public school teachers for their efficient and effective performance during the national and local elections.

“The teachers went out of their way to make this election generally peaceful and very orderly. Their transmission of the results is the fastest in my memory. They have proven that they can be trusted as they remained apolitical,” Luistro stressed.
He also expressed gratitude for their support, “Saludo ako at nagpapasalamat sa kaguruan. Sa palagay ko, ito na ang pinaka-successful, clean and very efficient election natin.”

Luistro reported that no untoward incidents had happened to any of the public school teachers nationwide who performed election duty.

“Ang napakagandang balita ay ang ating command center ay walang naitalang ulat ng any untoward incident especially with respect to our teachers. As of now, wala pa tayong natatalang death or injuries to our teachers,” Luistro said.

There are 409,392 DepEd personnel composed of Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs), Special Board of Election Inspectors (SBEIs), Boards of Canvassers (BOCs), support staff and DepEd supervisors who served during the national and local elections.

“60% of more than 685,000 DepEd employees were part of the elections, either as BEI member, support staff or supervisor,” Luistro said.

The Comelec grants the DepEd personnel with poll duties the allowance of P4,500 for the chairman and members of the BEI; P1,500 for BEI support staff; P3,000 for DepEd supervisors and P1,500 for other support staff.

Luistro said that the public school teachers with poll duties can get their honoraria after the elections.

BRITISH SCHOOL MANILA -  Middle School Model United Nations Conference

Last 15-16th of April 2016 was a time for British School Manila’s younger Model United Nations (MUN) students to shine and enter into research and debate about pressing national and international issues. MUN allows students with a passion for world affairs to not just expand their knowledge and understanding but also develop those key skills of articulating their understanding, speaking in public and applying their acquired knowledge.

Our students debated in a variety of topics such as the containment of the Zika virus, the consumption of fossil fuels, LGBT rights and the Question of Syria. There was even a sci-fi themed debate - as aliens had made contact with the Earth and a variety of proposals were put forward to deal with this new global development. These debates were issues that the students themselves voted to address during their conference.

We now have some 200 students on average participate in MUN and we host a number of major events – these are student-led events that give opportunities for students to learn leadership and let their abilities flourish throughout the conference - which is another great aspect of the programme.

MUN has now become a model we are using in the classroom and we would like to congratulate all of our MUN(ers) who have been involved over the past year.

The fact that our MUN clubs have grown exponentially for the last 4 years as we introduced the Middle Year MUN to Year 6 to 9 is something we are very proud of. The number of students who are expanding their understanding of others' thoughts, researching the values and attitudes of a particular country and presenting that country’s views in committee meetings and to a general assembly is amazing.

Globe Telecom and The Mind Museum bring the wonder of science

Science comes alive now in your mobile phone or tablet through The Mind Museum app!

Globe Telecom and The Mind Museum (TMM) have joined hands to bring the wonder of science to teachers, students, and to everyone interested in learning through a mobile app which gives users access to over 250 museum exhibits anytime and anywhere via their tablets or smartphones.

The Mind Museum is dedicated to providing an extraordinary educational experience that inspires the public understanding of science.

The TMM app deals with a wide array of topics and questions especially relevant to teachers and students who do not have the time, means, or opportunity to visit The Mind Museum. It is the first educational museum app in the country and promises a rich multimedia experience to anyone who downloads it.
“With the TMM app, we can now truly say that science is everywhere. While being in the museum completes your fun learning experience, having the app brings you closer, like no other technology can, to what animates The Mind Museum inside and out. With this app, kids of all ages, especially students and teachers, will now taste wonder at their fingertips. We can’t thank Globe enough for partnering with us on this and for having “wonder-making” as part of their mission,” said The Mind Museum curator, Maria Isabel Garcia.

“We are glad to partner with The Mind Museum on this app to give everyone a chance to access relevant and engaging educational content using their mobile device. This is in line with Globe Telecom’s commitment to provide Filipinos with 21st century learning and education through Information and Communications Technology with the end goal of creating a digital nation for a #WonderfulPH,” said Fernando Esguerra, Director for Globe Citizenship.
Globe and TMM are also teaming up on the Science Wonder workshop to further support this goal. The Science Wonder workshop is for teachers and scheduled to start next month. The roadshow will be conducted at select public schools which are also recipients of the Global Filipino Schools (GFS) program of Globe. Through the one-day workshop, the teachers will be coached on how to use the different features of the app to make classroom learning more fun, interactive, and interesting.

For instance, even while cooped up inside the classrooms, teachers can still bring their students on a virtual tour of the museum using the Exhibit Guide. This feature provides a map highlighting the exhibits in each gallery and information about them including quick access to exclusive content. The app also sparks curiosity with some mind-starting questions on various K-12 topics which educators and students can take advantage of.

The TMM app also has a collection of do-it-yourself science experiments and demonstrations similar to those being performed by its resident scientists in the museum’s Atom Gallery.

The app provides step-by-step visual guides which can be done in the school or at home using readily available materials.

On the other hand, museum-goers may also take advantage of the app by checking out the Learning Footpaths where they can have themed, self-guided tours around the museum. For quick access to exclusive content about each exhibit, they can take a picture of the QR codes.

The TMM app is available for free download at Google Play and the App Store for Android and iOS users, respectively.
