What you should know if you choose to be vaccinated for COVID-19: What to do before, on the day, and after getting the COVID-19 vaccine

The maximum efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine can only be achieved after you receive the two doses; and even after receiving both doses, make sure to still take preventive measures, especially when you’re in common public places.

As vaccination programs against COVID-19 are underway in most local government units, many are still in doubt and are not yet fully prepared to get inoculated. When deciding on whether or not to get a jab, it’s important to consider that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 adds a layer of protection from the virus. Full vaccination will not only help reduce the risk of infection and suffering from severe symptoms. Doing so will also protect your loved ones and the community as we strive to achieve herd immunity.

For those who may still have questions about the vaccination process and what to expect when their turn to get vaccinated comes, AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance providers, has enlisted the help of Dr. Nina Gloriani, head of the vaccine development expert panel of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), to share expert advice on what to do before, during, and after getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

Before your appointment. Individuals with comorbidities or those classified under the Department of Health’s A3 eligibility category should first discuss vaccine-specific risks and benefits with their attending physicians and obtain medical clearance. These include people with immune deficiencies and senior citizens with special conditions (bedridden, in vegetative states, or with limited life expectancies). Meanwhile, individuals without health issues may have their health profiling, provision of informed consent, and screening on the day of vaccination. Everyone who’s going to get a vaccine is advised to eat healthy balanced meals, drink plenty of fluids, and get enough rest and sleep before the appointment.

Vaccination day. On the day of your appointment, always wear a face mask and face shield and bring hand sanitizer or alcohol with you. If you belong to the A3 prioritization group, bring any proof of comorbidity. These may include a medical certificate, prescription for medicine, hospital records or surgical records and pathology reports. Don’t forget to bring any valid government or company ID, and your own ballpen for filling out forms. Be sure to take your maintenance medications before getting vaccinated unless your doctor says otherwise.

At the vaccination center. Upon arrival at the vaccination site, be ready to present required IDs and documents. Depending on your municipality, expect to wait for some time. Most LGUs have online registration in place and this significantly cuts the waiting time as you can already supply personal information and send consent online. If you did not go through online registration, you will be asked to sign an informed consent form stating that you agree to be vaccinated. After that, you will undergo a health screening to check if your vitals are stable and if you’re fit and qualified to get the vaccine at that time. If everything checks out, the medical staff will vaccinate you and observe you for 15-30 minutes, in case of an allergic or adverse reaction. They will also provide contact details or references so you can report any adverse effects after getting vaccinated.

After getting vaccinated. Like all medicine, vaccines may have side effects, most of which are mild and short-term, and not everyone experiences them. Common adverse effects, such as numbness or pain at injection site usually last for one to three days. If you experience fever, or flu-like symptoms, pain, or muscle aches, you may take paracetamol every four to six hours as needed. Make sure to report any adverse effects through the local vaccination site hotline, especially if symptoms or side effects persists after one to three days or if the symptoms become worse. Go to the nearest hospital if you experience severe or unusual symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face, or tightening of the throat.

Remember, the maximum efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine can only be achieved after you receive the two doses so mark your calendar for both appointments. Even after receiving both doses, make sure to still take preventive measures, especially when you’re in common public places.

Aside from getting the vaccine, there is more you can you do to protect your health and that of your family, especially with hospitalizations, lab tests, medicines, and the negative impact that this pandemic can have on your health and finances. As such, AXA Philippines offers its Global Health Access insurance product which provides comprehensive coverage worldwide of up to P175 million including coverage for epidemic and pandemic diseases such as COVID-19. Apart from this, it also covers reimbursement for COVID-19 vaccination which policyholders can avail until December 31, 2021. Furthermore, it also covers the treatment cost for complications or allergic reactions arising from approved COVID-19 vaccines.

Beyond comprehensive coverage worldwide and the inclusion of COVID-19 vaccination, Global Health Access policyholders can enjoy cashless payments in over 1,400 hospitals and clinics in the Philippines and over 9,000 hospitals globally. Be TaALERTo and help out stranded families and animals in Batangas

(Batangas, Philippines)Following Taal Volcano’s phreatomagmatic eruption last July 1 and the continuous unrest in the succeeding days, local government units in Batangas have ordered evacuation for families and individuals residing near the volcano.

As the makers of the TaALERT app, the first mobile application for real-time updates on Taal with safety and evacuation monitoring features, Teralogix has led the assistance to the evacuees by setting up a community pantry and providing free access to the TaALERT app. Teralogix has also provided the evacuation centers with thermometers and contact tracing portals to ensure the safety of the evacuees amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

PHIVOLCS has reported several phreatomagmatic bursts in the Taal Volcano over the past few weeks, and as of July 22, the grey plume reached up to 900 meters high. The evacuees will remain in the evacuation centers until the volcano settles, and while the efforts of Teralogix have been helpful to these communities, there is still a lot that we can do to help.

Promoting the bayanihan spirit and the TaALERTo attitude, Teralogix calls for everyone to help these communities through in-kind and cash donations. Among the necessities needed in the centers are: N95 masks, food and water for the families, and rescue vehicles for emergency relocations.

Ms. Drizzella Sicat, CEO of Teralogix, emphasizes the need for urgent help for these evacuees, “There has been continuous activity in the volcano this past week and the evacuees are in dire need of necessary supplies. Their lives have been uprooted and disrupted, and we need to be TaALERTo for them, by reaching out and helping them through this tough time.”

A lot of animals are currently stranded in unsafe locations, while some are currently living in the evacuation centers. Animal rescues are also being organized and any pet food and necessities are welcome. “We need to include these animals in our rescue efforts. They need to be taken care of as well, and we’re trying our best to make sure that we have enough for these pets,” added Ms. Sicat.

Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino 2021 goes digital with diverse and inclusive programming

Linggo Ng Musikang Pilipino (LMP) marks its second digital edition this year with a commitment to promoting awareness and appreciation of OPM artists from all over the world through multiple social media platforms.

The weeklong celebration promises a wide variety of music programs that not only cater to a specific format, but also encompass concerts and gigs, open mic challenges, exclusive premieres, workshops, and a lecture series.

The series of virtual events will run from July 23 to August 1, and will be streamed live via Facebook and KUMU.

Aside from a diverse set of homegrown talents performing online, LMP also partners with key and emerging stakeholders in the music industry such as AmiananPop, MinPop, Kadasig & Artist Ko, Soupstar Music, and Warner Music Philippines to ensure that artists with different backgrounds, and from different regions, are given equal opportunities to perform and engage with the community.

As Christian Bautista puts it, “We wanted there to be a balance between independent artists and mainstream/signed artists from all over the country and to try to cover as many styles and genres as possible. OPM already has a large roster of artists and we wanted to be able to feature as many as we can from the organization. We took into consideration their music and styles as well as the platforms that they are active in for the artists performing the LMP DigiGigs.”

Aside from the music shows and online concerts featuring the roster of PhilPop’s past champions and finalists, LMP is partnering with PETA for a special online showcase featuring the songs from Rak Of Aegis, as well as songwriting and learning opportunities that are spearheaded by the institution’s other partners, FILSCAP and PhilPop.

Even as the music industry is struggling to get back to its former glory and a lot of plans are derailed by the pandemic, LMP refuses to back down in its efforts to persevere and push through with mounting an online celebration that champions Filipino musicians not just from Metro Manila, but also from other parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, and the rest of the globe.

Hence, the tagline ‘Ituloy Ang Awitan’ was formed. In the words of LMP Project Manager Gab Cabangon, it was developed as part of a “desire to just challenge the situation that we are in.” He explains, “We wanted to highlight how Filipino Music is here to stay and will continue to be a part of our lives and a sense of hope despite the challenges in these trying times. The creation and support of Filipino music should never stop because our songs are able to reflect the story and the culture of the Filipino people.”

OPM Icon and OPM Board Member Noel Cabangon maintains that nothing can stop this important milestone in the history of Philippine music from happening. He reaffirms, “In an ideal situation, we would have wanted to have live shows and concerts so that fans of Filipino Music will get to have that real-life concert experience once again. But of course, there are a lot of considerations that we have to make. Our priority is to mount this festival safely and responsibly for everyone. For the time being, the social media platforms are a suitable alternative to allow artists to perform without the health risks brought about by the pandemic.”

Organized and produced by Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), LMP has been around since 2014, and has established itself as the premiere annual music festival of Filipino music.

This year’s edition will be headlined by some of the biggest and most promising artists in local music such as Noel Cabangon, Christian Bautista, Sandwich, 6cyclemind, Gracenote, Bayang Barrios, Cookie Chua, PhilPop Grand Champions reon and Chud Festejo, Miss Ramonne, artists from Warner Music Philippines like Ferdinand Aragon and Y ARA, and many many more!

This event is also supported by private companies such as Max’s Restaurant, KUMU and KUMUSIKA, The Medical City and Shopee among others.
