A bold innovation of an iconic drink: PepsiCo launches HARD MOUNTAIN DEW in the Philippines

PepsiCo is launching its first alcoholic beverage, HARD MOUNTAIN DEW, in the Philippines today.

HARD MOUNTAIN DEW is the company’s first ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage in the country

Launched in the United States in 2022, HARD MOUNTAIN DEW is a ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage that contains zero caffeine, no added sugar, 5% alcohol by volume (ABV), and 100 calories per serving.

“We’re excited to bring in HARD MOUNTAIN DEW to give our Filipino consumers a new take on Mountain Dew, our number one soda brand in the Philippines*. As our first ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage, HARD MOUNTAIN DEW’s bold flavors bring fun back into the lives of busy adults who want a responsible way to go from work to play,” said Nitin Bhandari, Sr. Director and General Manager, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore.

According to Bhandari, by offering an innovative take on Mountain Dew, PepsiCo is taking a step toward the company's larger vision for ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages.

“PepsiCo has a rich history of pushing boundaries and delivering innovative new products that responsibly meet the evolving needs of drinkers, both globally and nationwide. We see the ready-to-drink category as a great area of opportunity, as it has grown by 10% and is expected to accelerate over the next few years,” he added.

As the company expands into the RTD alcoholic beverage space, Bhandari affirmed the company’s commitment to adhering to responsible marketing on all its alcoholic products.

“Our alcoholic beverages are thoughtfully crafted for adults of legal drinking age who enjoy responsible consumption. In compliance with local regulations, our packaging prominently displays the word "HARD" with an enhanced visual design and a clear 5% ABV identified on the can. This effectively differentiates our alcoholic products while meeting consumer expectations and regulatory requirements,” he said.

Available starting August 15, 2024, in 330ml single-serve cans and 4-pack bundles, HARD MOUNTAIN DEW is available at major supermarkets, convenience stores, pubs, and bars in key select cities in two bold flavors Original and Beach Blast.

Monde Nissin and Hapinoy partnership to empower sari-sari stores and Agricultural groups with training and financial grants

Monde Nissin Corporation has announced a year-long partnership with social enterprise Hapinoy to uplift sari-sari stores through education opportunities and capital grants as part of their Tulong Sulong livelihood program.

The Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Atty. Olive Misa, Monde Nissin Corporate and Government Affairs Head, Monde Nissin Public Affairs Head Marc Alejo, and Hapinoy president Mark Ruiz during a ceremony held last Tuesday, June 11 at the Monde Nissin office in Pasig City.

Called “45@45 Sari-sari Store Enablement Program” in line with Monde Nissin’s 45th anniversary celebration, it aims to uplift sari-sari stores nationwide and expand livelihood opportunities. The two part pilot program will upskill 40 existing sari-sari stores through hands-on training, and also set up sari-sari stores as a sustainable source of income. The ground up stores will be provided to five agricultural cooperatives and community organizations in key areas in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Negros Region, and Davao Region identified by Monde Nissin.

“Sari-sari stores bridge gaps, ensuring that our products are readily available at the neighborhood level. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector plays a crucial role in producing the raw materials that make our products what they are today,” said Misa.

She added that the enablement program falls in line with the company’s long-term advocacy of extending entrepreneurial opportunities and financial support to sari-sari store owners with Hapinoy as their partner organization.

“What is very exciting and unique about [the program] is the integration on the other side, which is helping out five community-based organizations or suppliers as part of [Monde Nissin’s] inclusive chain. This project is something end-to-end,” shared Ruiz.

Hapinoy will roll out learning modules on business and financial management called “Hapiswkela” and offer packages that include inventory grants, store merchandise, and marketing materials to beneficiary sari-sari stores. As part of the 45@45 program, Hapinoy will also open the five Ground-Up stores as avenues for new business ventures for selected multi-purpose agricultural cooperatives.

Under the Tulong Sulong campaign, Monde Nissin’s sari-sari store enablement program is a step towards the company’s North Star advocacy of inclusive growth. Monde Nissin plans to launch more programs aimed at its ambition of improving the well-being of people and the planet through sustainable solutions for food security.

Red Bull Dance Your Style: The Road to National Finals

With the recent conclusions of both Red Bull Dance Your Style’s Manila and Cebu Qualifiers, the competition is only starting to heat up! The two qualifiers showcased the incredible talent and diversity of dancers in the country. With the next performances being more electrifying than the last, the participants from various backgrounds brought their A-game and battled it out to earn a coveted spot to the National Finals.

Red Bull Dance Your Style in Cebu Qualifiers

The Cebu Qualifiers took place last July 15. Having taken place at Trademark Cebu, Red Bull Dance Your Style found its first four finalists to compete in the highly-anticipated National Finals. Along with Baby Titan, the eventual winner of the Regional Qualifiers, the other three spots were given to Nemesis, Taw, and JPY.

The following week, the Manila Qualifiers at URBN QC proved to be an epic battle of dance talent, and JXYB – Dhztine Bernardino emerged as the victor, rising above the fierce competition to secure his spot in the National Finals of Red Bull Dance Your Style. The final three remaining slots for National Finals were given to contestants Darktruth, Luigi and Keycee.

With the Top 8 from the two regional qualifiers complete, only the remaining half is left for the National Finals, set to take place on September 2 2023 at 5th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The other half of the Top 16 will be Wildcard picks.

To be able to represent the country is something all finalists consider a big honor, since it showcases not just Filipino talent but also the Philippines as a place filled with unique culture, traditions, styles, and technique. According to dance consultant Lema Diaz: “Filipinos are very expressive, and that translates very well into our dancing culture. Whoever gets the chance to be the country’s representative to the World Finals, they have a very big torch to carry. They carry not just their personal aspirations but also the collective dreams and aspirations of their fellow Filipinos. Our dancing culture is deeply rooted in our history, culture, and values, and it serves as a powerful means of storytelling and connection.”

As Red Bull Dance Your Style's National Finals is fast approaching, the stakes are higher than ever for the finalists to give it their all and earn the coveted title of being the Philippines' representative on the global stage. From Spectator to Finalist: A Dancer’s Journey to the Red Bull Dance Your Style National Finals

The  Red Bull Dance Your Style Cebu Qualifiers has been nothing short of spectacular! The energy in the venue was electrifying as dancers from all over Cebu showcased their incredible talent and passion for dance. The Red Bull Dance Your Style competition truly lived up to its name, with each dancer bringing their unique style and flair to the stage.

Red Bull Dance Your Style Philippines brings talent, skill, and unique moves to the stage for all to witness. Having experienced pure talent dominate the stage leaves an encouraging and inspiring note to the dancers and enthusiasts in the audience that it could be them dancing on the stage one day. It was certainly that way for a finalist of the Cebu Qualifiers, Taw.

As someone who’s been an audience member in the first Red Bull Dance Your Style tournament, Taw had always admired the dancers' performances from afar. His admiration eventually led him to travel from Bacolod to Manila just to show support for the first Red Bull Dance Your Style winner, Mickey. A year later, Taw decided to take a leap of faith and participate in the next Red Bull Dance Your Style Cebu Qualifiers.

When asked what his practice regimen was like, Taw answered, “Lagi ko pong minamaster yung mga basic foundation ng style ko. Yung hinihigitan ko po yung mga vocabs ko then nag aaral ng mga panibagong sets/blowups. Laking tulong po talaga yung pag training araw-araw.”

Despite having to balance his work and his solo dance training, as well as not allowing himself to slack off, Taw’s hard work, dedication, and confidence in himself and his skills paid off, even landing him a spot as a regional finalist.

“Di ko inexpect na na-appreciate ng mga tao yung pinakita kong rounds during the Cebu Qualifier. Kaya sobrang saya ko na isa ako sa mga nakapasok sa National Finals. Hanggang ngayon hindi parin ako makapaniwala.” Taw shared after being asked what it felt like to get into the National Finals.

While Taw’s story is nothing short of inspirational, it’s not without its challenges, particularly when it comes to financial constraints. According to him, his life so far meant there are needs within his family that needed to be prioritized, leaving little for himself and his creative endeavors. With a lot of support from his friends and family, however, Taw was able to seek financial assistance and aid, receiving sponsorships and donations from his friends and students.

Knowing that the Red Bull Dance Your Style National Finals would be a fierce competition, Taw is determined to triple his efforts in preparing for the competition. He recognizes that, to stand out among the best dancers in the world, he needs to push himself beyond his limits and elevate his skills to a whole new level.

Even with the tough competition ahead, Taw is optimistic and leaves an encouraging message to anyone looking for a sign to participate in future Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifiers. “Sa mga gustong mag try battle and matutong sumayaw wag po kayong kabahan. Lahat naman po ay may tamang proseso. Invest your craft and learn your style kasi better na alam mo yung ginagawa mo at yung sayaw mo. Lagi niyong isipin na lahat tayo ay nagsimula sa hindi marunong. Kasi kung kinaya po namin, kaya nito rin ‘yan. Huwag matakot sumubok, wala namang mawawala.”

Taw is set to be one of 16 finalists competing at the National Finals this September 2. The champion of the National Finals will then advance to the World Finals, representing the Philippines against the top dancers from around the globe —the World Finals of Red Bull Dance Your Style in Germany in November this year.

Branded as its first-ever street culture-themed outdoor event, Alfie Alley invited tropang Alfie to feel at home while enjoying the company of their friends and good music as they sip on Alfonso Brandy, whether on the rocks, with cola or with ginger ale and lemon. Art formed a huge part of Alfie Alley as well, as they unveiled a larger-than-life street-art-inspired Alfonso Brandy Bottle installation and a huge Alfie Alley mural created by artist Dennis Bato. Then, capping off the fun-filled event was Alfie Awitan, a string of musical performances by some of today’s biggest acts. The line-up included SSUT, Hulu, John Roa, I Belong To The Zoo, and Urbandub.

Following Alfie Alley’s launch in Quezon City, the street culture-themed event is set to delight tropang Alfie again next month. Alfonso Brandy’s Alfie Alley will be making a stop at Papa Doms Bar and Restaurant in Tagaytay on May 20, to be followed by a run at Daluyon Beach Resort in La Union on May 27.

Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. Incentivizes Recycling through Tapon to Ipon: Basta Klaro, Panalo Collection Hubs across PH


Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI)—the bottling arm of Coca-Cola in the country—is accelerating its plastic bottle collection program “Tapon to Ipon: Basta Klaro, Panalo” to benefit more communities nationwide. Through Tapon to Ipon, clear beverage plastic bottles made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET)—material that is 100% recyclable—are collected to be given new life through PETValue Philippines, the country’s first bottle-to-bottle recycling facility.

Through Tapon to Ipon, CCBPI hopes to change the mindset about packaging recyclability—because clear used PET plastic bottles usually get thrown away after use (tapon), their potential wasted. In sari-sari store collection hubs first launched in Batangas City and the City of Manila, used PET plastic bottles are being collected and exchanged by community members for incentives (ipon).

All Tapon to Ipon collection hubs are accepting all types of clear post-consumer PET plastic beverage bottles– regardless of brand —thus the tagline Basta Klaro, Panalo! Underscoring that clear plastic bottles chart higher in recyclability compared to colored ones.

“Through Tapon to Ipon, we want to raise awareness about recycling and we want to do our part in ensuring that plastic packaging materials that are 100% recyclable are collected and used again,” says Gareth McGeown, CEO and President of CCBPI. “At the same time, we’re starting a movement within local communities— World Without Waste is a collective movement and the contribution of every single individual is valuable.”

World Without Waste is Coca-Cola’s global goal to collect and recycle 100% of the bottles and cans it sells by 2030—a campaign now finding a pillar in Tapon to Ipon and its ability to enjoin every stakeholder within and beyond the Coca-Cola ecosystem in taking part.

Sari-sari stores as plastic bottle collection hubs

Tapon to Ipon leverages Coca-Cola's extensive network to collect post-consumer plastic bottles: trade outlets such as sari-sari stores and wholesalers are being tapped to stand as collection hubs. These outlets—which often double as community landmarks, and who help bring Coca-Cola products closer to Filipino homes—are now also hubs through which plastic packaging gets collected for recycling.

To encourage store owners to participate, Coca-Cola developed an incentive-based strategy that would provide SMEs additional income on top of their sari-sari store business. Consumers also benefit from the program as they receive Coca-Cola products in exchange for the used plastic bottles that they will turn over at the Tapon to Ipon sari-sari store hubs.

"Nagustuhan po namin ang Tapon to Ipon dahil sa incentives na nakukuha namin. Nakakatuwa dahil nakakatulong din po kami sa kalinisan ng kapaligiran. Ang mga plastik na bote na nasa estero at kalsada, ngayon po dinadala dito sa tindahan para ipalit ng Coke Mismo (We appreciate Tapon to Ipon because of the incentives that we get. We enjoy how we are also able to help the environment. The plastic bottles that used to be in drainage canals and streets are now being brought to our store to be exchanged for Coke Mismo)," says Ace of Saunder’s, a Tapon to Ipon Collection Hub in Batangas.

"Ipagpapatuloy namin ang Tapon to Ipon dahil natutunan ng mga tao ipunin at ihiwalay ang plastik bottles para ipalit sa libreng Coke. Nagkaroon ng halaga ang basura na dating nasa isang tabi lang (We will continue to take part in Tapon to Ipon because people are learning how to collect and segregate plastic bottles in exchange for free Coke. Wastes that used to be scattered are now given value)," shares Leonor from Bigasan sa Hilltop, also a hub in Batangas.

CCBPI has also been organizing awareness activities in different barangays, to familiarize more communities about its collection program and about the inherent recyclability of clear PET packaging. Such initiatives include one-day barangay events, setting up in barangay halls or basketball courts to enjoin participation in Tapon to Ipon.

The program was first launched in October 2021 in Batangas City, where Coca-Cola’s partner store hubs have been collecting a total of around 300kgs of clear plastic bottles a week on average. The success of this pilot rollout has shown immense potential as a sustainable reverse route to a market model for post-consumer plastic bottle collection.

Following its successful pilot in Batangas City, Tapon to Ipon was launched in the City of Manila City in February 2022—and is set to be expanded across the country in the coming months.

“We are grateful for the support of all our partners—LGUs and barangay officials who have welcomed us into their communities—in making the pilot launch of Tapon to Ipon a success,” says McGeown. “We are very excited about expanding the reach of the program, further spreading its positive impact on communities, and accelerating the benefits of sustainability.”

Tapon to Ipon via Happiness On-Demand delivery

In addition to collecting plastic bottles through sari-sari stores and wholesalers, Tapon to Ipon: Basta Klaro, Panalo was also launched via CCBPI’s Happiness on Demand (HOD) home delivery service. HOD customers in Las Pinas, Parañaque, Alabang, and Bonifacio Global City can turn over clear plastic bottles to the Coca-Cola HOD team upon delivery of their orders.

McGeown adds “We know we have the responsibility to manage our environmental footprint and to ensure a sustainable circular economy for all—and this is why at Coca-Cola, we always take action.”

In the Philippines, as part of its pursuit of a World Without Waste, Coca-Cola’s business and packaging footprint is 50% returnable glass, and all its packaging materials are 100% recyclable. Through programs like Tapon to Ipon and partnerships with various groups, Coca-Cola enjoins everyone to join the collective movement to make World Without Waste a reality.
