OPPO, in partnership with international children’s organization Save the Children Philippines, has recently completed the turnover of 100 brand new sets of OPPO A12e smartphones, Rock Space Torch Bluetooth Earphones, and special online learning kits to select students from public schools in Navotas City, namely Tanza Elementary School, Tanza National High School, Bagumbayan Elementary School, and Navotas National High School.

 Filipinos on Online Distance Learning

Securing better access to online distance learning is challenging, especially for those who have lesser means to provide for themselves. This is a common concern among the parents and students of Teacher Claudine of Tanza Elementary School, a Special Education (SpEd) teacher with six years of experience.

“Nagka-virtual orientation kami ngayon kung paano mangyayari ang modular learning…You really have to do everything and explore all means. Hindi ito normal na may problema lang, may pandemya kasi,” Teacher Claudine shared. “Sa SpEd [students] kasi they need immediate feedback. Kailangan din nila ng individualized na approach. Pero ang parents hindi sila trained to do that. Kung hindi ganoon ka-strong ang foundation and follow-up sa bahay, magiging malaki ang regression.” she added.

Teacher Claudine’s students were some of the selected recipients of the OPPO A12e smartphones and Rock Space Torch Bluetooth Earphones for online distance learning which are useful tools in helping the SpEd students to get the attention and support needed while doing online classes.

Another true experience was shared by Nanay Rosalinda and her daughter Filchriz, who has been diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay. Filchriz is one of the recipients of the OPPO A12e and online learning kit including pencils, pens, crayons for her art classes. “Hindi man niya masabi na miss niya ang school, minsan kapag pinalabas siya dumidiretso [sa daan] papunta sa school,” said Nanay Rosalinda. At home, she mentioned that they do not have a table for Filchriz to study while doing the online classes but the family is doing their best to provide what they could for her to continue classes despite the pandemic situation.

Aside from the smartphone and Bluetooth earphone donations, OPPO and Save the Children also set up a fundraising initiative through the Back-To-School campaign, which started last August. The effort resulted in funds to purchase more online learning kits for other students in need. Each learning kit includes art materials and basic safety and sanitation kits, like alcohol and face masks, for the kids.

“With the joint efforts of OPPO, Save the Children Philippines, and the kind-hearted Filipinos who have participated in this fundraising initiative, we were able to extend help to students most in need of support. We are optimistic that together we can do more for everyone if we continue to band together and lend a helping hand to each other as we overcome these trying times,” OPPO Philippines Marketing Director Raymond Xia.

Globe spearheads the digital transformation of Manila

Globe signs MOA with Mayor Isko Moreno to deploy  GoWIFI and to empower scholars with GCash.

Globe  spearheads the digital transformation of the country’s capital by providing fast and reliable internet connectivity in key areas with GoWiFi and delivering financial technology services to the city’s scholars with GCash.

The use of GCash as the official financial services platform to send allowances and other monetary benefits to about 15,000 scholars under the Office of the Manila City Mayor. Students will receive a corresponding GCash Mastercard to withdraw their cash allowance, and will also serve as their official identification card as a bonafide scholarship beneficiary of the city.

Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno today signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to make GoWiFi available at Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat. Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Tondo National High School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.

“Providing free WiFi services via GoWiFi and bringing financial inclusivity via GCash are just the initial undertakings from our end to contribute to the digitalization efforts of the city. Our goal is to provide the entire digital ecosystem of Globe for ManileƱos to enjoy their digital lifestyle,” he revealed as he stressed that the collaboration with the City of Manila is a first step in contributing to the city’s digital transformation initiatives.

Cu also signified intention to improve the Globe network in the city to enable its digitalization. ”We need to build additional 100 wireless sites to improve the signal in Manila,” Cu said.

Globe also has several ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives as part of its sustainability program directly benefited ManileƱos, such as the Globe Plastic Xchange program held in Brgy. 455 last September 14 where single use plastics were collected in exchange for rewards points, turnover of information and communication technologies equipment and a computer lab to Manila Science High School, roll-out of Globe‘s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) to Manila Science High School students in 2016 to teach them responsible use of the internet and which will be adopted in the curriculum of the Department of Education for all public schools including those in Manila City, and Globe’s participation in the Manila Bay coastal clean-up with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources this September 21.

GoWiFi continues its expansion plans nationwide, particularly in high-traffic areas like malls, hospitals, and schools to make high-quality internet connection accessible and affordable to more Filipinos. As of the first half of the year, GoWiFi is accessible in 2,500 sites nationwide, up by 500 sites from the previous year.

To date, GCash has made financial transactions easier for its 20 million registered users. And with over 70,000 partner merchants in the country, it truly has helped revolutionize the way Filipinos transact.

Public elementary schools in Mega Manila to receive over 5,000 digital pianos

For years, Placido del Mundo Elementary School (PDMES) in Barangay Talipapa has been joining various competitions to uphold the institution’s honor—one of which are school choir competitions held by both public meets and the private sector.

Assistant Principal Adela B. Lacaba recalls that the school’s glee club has been practicing without the aid of a piano. “Matagal nang walang matinong piano and PDMES at dahil sumasali kami sa mga competitions gaya ng National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) at Voices in Harmony, mahirap mag-rehearse ng walang piano,” said Lacaba.

As music teacher and choir director Shermaine Bulante pointed out the need for a piano is imperative not only to teach basic music to young learners but also to support the choir group’s rehearsal after school hours. With nothing but the willing hearts of 40 students, she had to manage.

“Para maging familiar ang mga batasa lessons na tinuturo ko, dinadala ko nalang ang sarili kong keyboard para at the same time, makapag-practice din kami ng choir. Dahil dito sa keyboard na ito, marami na din akong nabigyan ng lessons sa mga batang gustong matutong mag-piano,” Bulante shared.

PDMES is one of the many schools in the metro that had been entering nationwide primary-level choir competitions without proper musical instruments to facilitate their rehearsal. To address this, the Department of Education (DepEd) and Booyoung Company Korea turned over 5,000 digital pianos and 50,000 metallic boards to elementary schools across the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, and Southern Tagalog regions.

Despite the shipping costs, Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Lusitro FSC was keen on distributing the digital pianos and metallic boards to improve music education among primary school students.

“As we continue to distribute the digital pianos to many other schools, at least 5,000 elementary schools and at least 50,000 metallic boards to our learners, we are certain that the music of both Filipinos and Koreans will resound so much better in the world allowing us to create a whole new global community where we are all brothers and sisters. Hopefully, the first note and the music that we will start will be one through the kindness and generosity of the Booyoungcompany and most specially, Dr. Lee.” Luistro said.

Booyoung Company Chairman Dr. Lee Joong-Keun emphasized his belief in education and has been exerting efforts to providing children all over the globe the learning environment that they deserve.

“We hope that this donation could contribute to the development of the educational infrastructure of the Philippines to help the children grow to be the leader of national economic development. We will do our best to contribute to expand cultural interchange with all of the world, and pay more attention to improvement of educational environment and support to help the future generation to grow up as a global leader.” said Joong-Keun.

The project also aims to reaffirm the friendship of the Philippines and the Republic of Korea, that was established during the end of the Korean war in the 1950s. Discussion on the donation began in 2014 between the two parties and was assisted by the Korean Embassy of the Philippines.

“Napakalaking tulong po ang magkaroon ng sariling piano ang school. Hindi lang ito magiging ginahawa para sa aming mga music teachers, kundi para na rin sa aming mga studyante na hinangad maging parte ang musika sa kanilang buhay hanggang sa paglaki nila,” Bulante said.
