Sen. Robin Padilla with global experts push the legalization of medical cannabis for cancer pain management

Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla, championing the legalization of global cannabis in the Philippines with international medical cannabis expert Dr. Shiksha Gallow lead the press conference held on December 19 at the Solaire Resort in ParaƱaque City, on the latest clinical updates on the use of medical cannabis, citing various benefits from it.

Leading global cannabis expert Dr. Shiksha Gallow joined Senator Padilla in pushing for the legalization of medical cannabis in the Philippines to help alleviate severe pain experienced by cancer patients and other Filipinos suffering from chronic illnesses.

Senator Padilla said enacting a law on medical cannabis will help patients, particularly children and their family, who have a difficult time acquiring it. “Ito na ang pinakamura at pinaka-epektibo na puwede pong i-subsidize ng gobyerno,” Sen. Padilla said during the conference.

Senator Padilla has filed Senate Bill 2573 or the Cannabis Medicalization Act of the Philippines which is pending in the Senate plenary. He said this is the first time that a bill on medical cannabis has reached the Senate floor. This legislation seeks to establish a regulated system for cultivating, distributing, and prescribing medical cannabis to provide relief to Filipinos suffering from cancer and chronic illnesses.

During the press conference, global cannabis experts highlighted the benefits of medical cannabis and shared latest findings in clinical studies for medical cannabis and cited that the Philippines could very well position itself as the medical cannabis hub in Asia.

“The issue of medical cannabis is not just about legislation, it is about humanity. I urge you to vote in favor of this bill, not just as lawmakers, but as human beings who stand for the dignity and welfare of every Filipino,” Dr. Gallow said.

She cautioned that delays could mean losing the chance to make a real difference. Backed by science and patient needs, she called on lawmakers to respond urgently, adding that the Philippines could take the lead in advancing medical cannabis in Asia.

“Thailand has opened up cannabis but now it’s time for the Philippines to give it a try. I believe Philippines can lead medical cannabis in Asia,” Gallow said.

Global and local experts also ensure that cannabis a safer and more accepted option for medical treatment.

“It’s time because patients need it, the science supports it,” Gallow said.

According to Gallow who administers medical cannabis to her patients, it can be used for various conditions such as chronic pain, auto-immune inflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, insomnia, epilepsy, cancer, ADHD and autism.

Advancing care for Filipinos

The discussion also touched on Senate Bill (SB) No. 2573, known as the Cannabis Medicalization Act of the Philippines, authored by Senator Robinhood Padilla which outlines a regulated system for the cultivation, distribution, and prescription of medical cannabis for qualified patients, aiming to improve pain management options and address debilitating medical conditions across the country.

Senator Padilla is hopeful about the passing of the bill, stating that it is already on track for its third Senate reading after a series of interpolations. He also shared insights on global best practices in the use of medical cannabis, describing it as a revolution.

"I have spoken with fellow senators about the evidence-based use of cannabis. I saw for myself the difference between recreational and medical cannabis. Nakita natin yung malaking pagkakaiba na recreational cannabis makes you high samantalang and medicinal cannabis ay may therapeutic benefits," Senator Padilla said.

Sen. Padilla also shared updates from his Israel visit, where he gained insights into the safety and quality standards of pharmaceutical cannabis, describing it as both clean and organic.

He said that medical cannabis remains safe even if misused. "Kapag ang medical cannabis ay inabuso, wala pong negatibong epekto. Napakadali nitong kontrolin dahil may mga umiiral nang batas ang Dangerous Drugs Board. Ang binabago lang natin sa batas ay gawing legal ang paggamit nito bilang gamot."

Medical cannabis has been shown to address a range of conditions supported by evidence-based studies, including cancer, chronic pain, autoimmune inflammatory diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis), epilepsy, insomnia, wasting syndrome (linked to HIV/AIDS), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism, among others.

Expert insights from global and local leaders

The event highlighted globally recognized Cannabis Clinician Dr. Shiksha Gallow, known for her pioneering work in South Africa, including leading clinical trials on replacing opioids with cannabis for pain management.

Her husband, Wayne Gallow, who was paralyzed after a motorcycle accident, shared how medical cannabis aided his recovery specifically in pain management and patient support. “"You guys have an unbelievable opportunity to do things better than the other countries that are surrounding you," he said.

Filipino experts also weighed in on the importance of local implementation. Dr. Gem Marq Mutia, founder of the Philippine Society of Cannabinoid Medicine, stressed the need for educating healthcare providers on cannabinoid treatments; Dr. Peter Quilala, a board member of the same organization, underscored the value of locally conducted research to shape policies; and Dr. Angel Gomez, past president of the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists, highlighted cannabis' role in pain management for palliative care.

Growing calls for cannabis legalization in the Ph

Cannabis remains classified as an illegal substance under Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

Last February, the Department of Health (DOH) has reminded the public that “the use of marijuana remains punishable by law unless granted a compassionate special permit issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)”. Such permits allow limited use and importation of medical cannabis for specific patients.

However, growing evidence of its therapeutic potential has prompted increasing scrutiny of its prohibition. Medical professionals and patient advocacy groups have consistently called attention to the benefits of cannabis in treating debilitating conditions, urging lawmakers to reconsider its legal status.

The DOH has acknowledged ongoing efforts to legalize medical cannabis but stressed the importance of grounding any initiatives in robust scientific evidence, while carefully evaluating their cost-effectiveness and public health impact.

Paving the way for compassionate healthcare

For Senator Padilla, advocating for medical cannabis addresses deep-rooted deficiencies in the healthcare system, saying: “Nahuhuli na po tayo. Sa isyu ng cannabis, ang dami na nating dapat ginawa. Ang Australia at iba pang bansa, nagtatanim na ng hemp. Pero dito sa atin, bawal pa rin. Bakit ba hindi natin matanggap ang cannabis bilang gamot? Matagal na itong ginagamit bilang lunas."

Senate Bill No. 2573 is gaining momentum as advocates continue to push for its passage. The proposed legislation lays the groundwork for a highly regulated medical cannabis program that promotes safety, access, and accountability.

Senator Padilla envisions the Philippines becoming a center for cancer treatment in Asia and expressed confidence that the President will support the bill if presented properly.

With developments underway, proponents remain optimistic that the Philippines will soon join a growing list of nations leveraging medical cannabis to bridge gaps in healthcare.

The initiative seeks to provide relief to patients while upholding stringent safeguards to prevent misuse, ultimately positioning the country as a leader in affordable, safe, and accessible healthcare solutions.

Speaking before the graduates, Vice Admiral Adaci emphasized on the crucial role of reservists to ensure national security.

Celebrity reservist Major Jose Sixto G Dantes III PN, better known as Dingdong Dantes recalled his experience when he enlisted as reservist in 2006: “Isa lang po ang katanungan ko: how else can i serve the country and the people? And I learned that the best way to serve the country is by serving the organization well.” Dantes expressed his hope that the new graduates will embody intergrity honor and excellence in all their endeavors.

Senator Francis Tolentino acknowledged the sacrifices made by the reservists for the love of country.

Senator Padilla who has been known to push for citizen military training highlighted on the visible reservists’transformation after their training.

Kitang kita nyo na buong-buo kayo bilang isang Pilipino,” Padilla said.

Sen. Padilla urged the new reservists to use the ranks they achieved as a symbol and motivation to influence the youth in being part of the reservist program.

Rallying the public to support and be part of the reservist program, Padilla said that the success of the civilian military training would only be successful if people would truly understand how important the role of the reservist is for the country and the people.
Inspired by Sen. Padilla's patriotism, advocacy and hope for stronger reservist movement, actress Nadia Montengro, real name Nadine M. Pla, was among the 48 new reservists who completed the basic training of the force. Nadia works at Padilla's office as a political affairs officer.

The senator expressed hope that people from Palawan, Western Mindanao and (plug here other places with low applicants) would soon enlist in the movement and eventually become reservists, noting that
the appetite for the movement in these areas could still be improved.

Padilla expressed hope that the new 48 reservists would serve as an inspiration to other people in promoting a deeper love for the country and its people.

Robin Padilla well known film director, screenwriter, producer, actor and MINDANAO Peace Advocate launched, Tindig Marawi, yesterday, October 26, 2017 held at Ilustrado, Intramuros, Manila.

Tindig Marawi, Padilla's  personal advocacy to help rebuild the war-torn city and provide support for its people in terms of shelter and livelihood opportunities.

Marawi City, officially known as the Islamic City of Marawi, is the capital and the only city in the province of Lanao del Sur on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The people of Marawi are called the Maranaos and speak the Maranao language. They are named after Lake Lanao, which is called Meranauin the language, upon whose shores Marawi lies. The city is also called the "Summer Capital of the South" because of its higher elevation and cooler climate.

All hopes and effort for the full-blown rehabilitation, reconstruction and rebuilding to get back into normalcy of the city after the five-month battle against Islamic State-inspired terrorists.

“Ang Mindanao at kapayapaan ay dalawang bagay na malapit sa aking puso,” Padilla shares, explaining why the Marawi Siege that lasted for five months has impacted him in a big way.

Unknown to many, Padilla has already started helping the people of Marawi since the war started last May by reaching out to friends, relatives, and private companies to gather relief goods for those displaced by the war. Padilla also recently donated Php5 million for the psycho-social intervention of the kids of Marawi and personally distributed Php5 million worth of relief goods to affected families.

Despite these efforts, Padilla admits that the people of Marawi need so much more help.

An advocate and dedicated Filipino, Padilla created the “Tindig, Marawi” movement to create heightened awareness on the critical needs of the people of Marawi despite the recent government’s declaration on the end of the Marawi siege.

Padilla said that the worst thing that could happen is for the public to forget that the people of Marawi still needs everyone’s help, especially at this time of rebuilding.

“Ang Tindig Marawi po ay isang kilusan, hindi poi to pansariling pagkilos ko lamang. Inaanyayahan ko po ang lahat na tumulong para sa pagbangon at pagtindig na muli ng Marawi. Natapos man po ang digmaan, napakalaki pa rin po ng kanilangang pangangailangan. Bahay, hanapbuhay, pagkain, ospital, paaralan—napakarami pong nawasak sa Marawi at malawakang pagtulong po ang kailangan para makatindig silang muli,” Padilla said during in a press conference yesterday.

Lito Villanueva, managing director of the financial technology company FINTQ, is also collaborating with Tindig Marawi through the “Pabuhay” component where they commit to assist the Marawi victims regain their livelihood and facilitate organic farming and micro business training through their program, KasamaKa.

They will also kickstart the Tindig Marawi Livelihood Fund, hoping to raise a minimum of P10 million which will be used to provide seed money to the people of Marawi so they could start and rebuild their businesses.

Dr. Potre Diampuan

Also present during the press conference was Interfaith peace advocate Dr. Potre Diampuan who shared with the media the three things that the Maranaos need at this time – Shelter, Subsistence and Sustainability.

Padilla appealed for media, government and non-government, and all to support this cause - Tinding Marawi.
“Umaasa ako na sana’y itong proyekto nating Tindig Marawi ay maka-antig sa puso ng ating mga kababayan na tumulong sa mga kapatid nating naapektuhan sa katatapos lang na labanan sa Marawi,” Padilla said.
Padilla mentioned some of his colleagues in the industry, such as actor Piolo Pascual and director Joyce Bernal, have already donated to the Tindig Marawi fund and Padilla hopes that more people will follow suit.

Mini chat with glowing mom-to-be Mariel Rodriguez

All are super excited to see that the television host Mariel Rodriguez will be giving birth to a girl. It will be her and husband Robin Padilla’s first child.

Mariel first suffered a miscarriage in March last year. She then lost a triplets pregnancy six months later. For her third pregnancy, she has undergoing heparin treatment to boost her chances of giving birth.

Since months ago, she has gone on a leave from work for her baby. She is grateful that ABS-CBN understands her delicate situation.

Mariel leaves for the US to give birth to her 1st baby girl sometime in November.  Last September 18, with a small group of bloggers had a joyful exclusive chat with a beautiful and glowing mom-to-be Mariel for a send-off party as she will leave for US this month.

Here are some from the mini chat with Mariel:

Mariel on her 7th month pregnancy :

In preparation for the coming baby girl, Mariel took several workshops which include newborn care, feeding class and the birthing class.

“A lot of people are saying you won’t need it because when the baby is there you know what to do, mother instinct will kick in.” Mariel said.

"But I feel it’s good to be prepared, it’s good to have yung may knowledge ka pa din na sarili mo, to learn and be prepared pagdating nya,” she added.

She gave up desserts as part of her diet which includes cakes and ice cream during her pregnancy.

Mariel on baby :

“The baby is malikot, lalu na sa gabi. And I have to tell her it’s time to sleep kapag matutulog na kami.” But she was so excited. That is when the baby start to move she become more excited, alam mo na malapit na,” Mariel intimately shared with us.

Pinaglihi sa first sa steak, then chicken siopao and last is buko pie.

Why name Maria Isabela De Padilla :

"It comes from two different women from Spain of the original Padilla descendants. Maria from Robin’s super, beautiful lola. And Isabella, is one of the conqueror of Spain. The name given was intended to mean greatness. And Mariel stressed that the baby would be called Isabella. No Bela, no Isa, it must be Isabella."

The baby doesn’t have a yaya, the baby’s yaya is me but I have a yaya,” she noted laughing. As she added she is prepared to breastfeed her baby.

Gladly to see Mariel is relax now and enjoying her pregnancy and always praying for a healthy baby.

On question why she is giving birth in the US:

“Alam mo yung nandito tayo madaming distractions (work, etc.). Robin and I feel that the baby deserves 100% percent attention, kanya lang. We waited so long, and the baby deserved that. Sya lang lang ang bida. Hindi si Robin hindi ako, sya lang. That’s how we want to motivate the baby,” Mariel stressed."

When to come back?

"It depends if the baby, and if Robin can come early, then there’s no need to fly back the baby early. Kawawa naman si baby kung one month old pa lang paliliparin mo na sya, mae-stressed sya. Kaya kung okay na si baby then that’s the time."

Congratulations Mariel and Robin! We will include you in our prayers. God will always bless you, protect you and your baby Maria Isabella.

At the same time they continuously strive to work hard to be able to provide a better life for their families back in the Philippines. This is already a legitimate reason to salute and celebrate them.

“For more than 75 years, MoneyGram has been helping people around the world and their families to stay connected across borders and boundaries, oceans and countries. It is our honor to be able to assist and support our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in sending money to their loved ones and becoming their bridge to a better life” says Yogesh Sangle, senior regional director of MoneyGram for Asia & Pacific.

MoneyGram offers global network of approximately 350,000 locations in 200 countries and territories worldwide and more than 12,000 locations across the Philippines. This allows Filipinos to send and receive cash from anywhere in the world.

Receivers can conveniently claim their remittances in the Philippines through trusted partner locations. Additionally, OFW family members can now send their remittances directly to their loved ones’ bank accounts at any bank in the Philippines through MoneyGram’s cash-to-account service.

Each family member plays an active and vital role in pulling the family closer together in the absence of one or both OFW’s parents. The amount of emotional devotion that is required from them is something that both MoneyGram and Robin Padilla admire.

“I am delighted to be a part of MoneyGram once more because I believe in what they stand for. OFWs are there for their family and friends to financially assist them with life challenging situations” shares Padilla.

“MoneyGram’s priority is to connect our consumers with their loved ones by providing convenient and reliable financial connection for life’s essentials and daily needs. We allow them to be as close as possible by providing financial support for their children” adds Sangle.

With reliable, 10-minute money transfers, subject to agent’s operating hours and compliance with regulatory requirements, MoneyGram positively impacts millions of people every day by providing industry leading customer experience at every interaction and access to financial services for consumers and businesses around the world.

MoneyGram, whether online, or through a mobile device, at a kiosk or in a local store, connect consumers any way that is convenient for them. We also provide bill payment services, issue money orders and process official checks in select markets.

Robin’s golden touch

There is this famous figure in Greek mythology, King Midas, who turned everything he touched into gold.

And then there is action star Robin Padilla who seems to be like King Midas. Recently, it looks like everything or every person that Robin supports or endorses turns “golden.”

Take the case of new Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte whom Robin supported in the last elections. Robin was very vocal about his support for Duterte. He even campaigned for Duterte to OFWs in Hong Kong.

Even before the former Davao City Mayor confirmed that he was running, and even before he was leading in the surveys, Robin had already stated that he wanted Mayor Duterte to be the highest leader of the land. On his birthday last November, Robin said that his wish was for Mayor Duterte to file his candidacy and become president. Robin got his wish!

Robin firmly believes that Duterte is what the Philippines needs.

Robin’s touch worked again at “Pilipinas Got Talent” (“PGT”) Season 5 wherein the Power Duo composed of acrobatic dancers Anjanette and Gavin emerged as winners (the first set of dancers to win in “PGT” history). Robin served as judge on “PGT,” and it was he who first spotted the star potential of the Anjanette and Gavin when he hit the golden buzzer that sent them to the semi-finals.

Robin also wields magic in the advertising world where he remains as top celebrity endorser. Moneygram renewed their contract with the action star whom the remittance company believes has a strong appeal to the OFWs and OFW families which are their market.

Other advertisers, namely, Kawasaki, Liveraide and Talk N’ Text have also renewed their contracts with Robin, affirming that the star continues to draw in sales for their products.

Northern Cement also recognized Robin’s influence and so it recently got him as endorser. Same with Hotel Sogo that enlisted Robin and wife Mariel Rodriguez to be its ambassadors now that the hotel chain is repositioning itself as a family-friendly destination.

Speaking of Mariel, the “Showtime” host is now three months pregnant and Robin couldn’t be happier. “Ang tagal naming hinintay magkaanak,” says Robin. “Pagkatapos ng ilang pagsubok, eto nga at tatlong buwang buntis na si Mariel. Pareho naming ipinagdarasal na maging safe at smooth ang kanyang pagbubuntis. Malaking blessing ito para sa amin. Alam kong malaking sakripisyo ang pinagdadaanan ni Mariel, hindi madali ang kanyang pagbubuntis. Kailangan ng pag-iingat.”

Everything seems to be going well in Robin’s professional and personal lives, we couldn’t help but ask the star what he has been doing to be gifted with this seemingly golden touch. “Eh, wala naman,” he declares humbly. “Matagal na akong going straight,” he says referring to his checkered past. “Ang akin ngayon, gusto ko lang patuloy na gumawa ng mabuti para sa pamilya, para sa kapwa, at lalong-lalo na, para sa bayan.”

Bringing joy to everyone around him—his family, friends, his kababayans— is what Robin with the golden touch wants to continue doing. Fans of Binoe in London and Canada will be thrilled to know that he will visit them in July for a series of shows for The Filipino Channel (TFC).

Continue touching our lives, Robin!

Love, glory and sacrifice : Heroes across the sea

Loving from the distance... People live away from their loved ones back home, delude themselves into thinking that they can live everyday life elsewhere around the world, and hope, pray and expect that the people they left behind will always be there safe and live comfortably.

People always ask themselves "what are you willing to do for the people you love?"

For Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), this question is something they live with every day. Every day, they answer it by spending time away from their families, working in a different world. Every day they choose to help, often at the cost of their own comfort.

Working abroad requires big changes. It means going out of comfort zones and taking chances far from the convenience of the place they call home. Bringing their talents abroad for the sake of uplifting loved ones back in the country involves dedication, a strong will, and unarguably, a big heart.

For actor and TV personality Robin Padilla, calling these people “modern day heroes” is not enough for the amount of glory and sacrifice they give to the country. The actor, who is an avid advocate of OFWs, can very much relate to the stories these people tell.
“Hindi ako bago sa kanila. Baliktad lang siguro ang sitwasyon ko dahil ako kumikita ako dito at pinapadala ko sa Australia. Pero alam ko ang pakiramdam ng malayo sa mga anak ko. (I’m not new to their situation. Maybe it’s the opposite because in my case I earn money here and send it to Australia. But I know the feeling of being away from my children.),” Robin added.

The drive of these modern heroes and their dedication towards their loved ones are aspects that have always resonated with him. He shares the facets that make him admire these people succinctly and emphatically.

“Kung sakripisyo lang, lahat naman tayo nagsasakripisyo eh. Yung tibay talaga. Kapag andun ka sa ibang bansa at solo ka, iba yun. (If it’s just about sacrifice, we all make them. It is really the strength of these people. It is different when you are in a different country alone.).”

Touching the hearts of OFWs

The actor’s innate compassion for these individuals is the reason why he was chosen by a leading global money remittance service to serve as its face--and heart. Alex Chan Lim, Country Manager of MoneyGram International, Inc., Philippines praises the man for his sincere stand towards OFWs.

“There was a meeting of the minds. When we first talked to him, we saw how he keeps true to his word. All the things that he says, they come from the heart.”

He elaborates, “He isn’t the type of person who would just go out there for the sake of his job as an endorser. He has genuine care that touches the hearts of these people. And once you touch the softness of their heart, the rest will follow.”

The actor, who has represented MoneyGram since 2012, has been an effective conduit that connects Filipinos abroad to the culture they have temporarily left behind in the country. With the help of the brand, the TV personality has actively reached out to OFWs through a series of performances to bring joy to these modern heroes.

MoneyGram has been participating and at some cases, mounting its own shows for free as part of their efforts for the OFWs. Padilla religiously participates in them to gamely entertain the OFW communities across the sea.

Lim shares one particular experience they had abroad. “There was a time when we went to Saudi Arabia and we met an OFW who works at the hotel we checked in. When he saw us, he naturally got awestruck with Robin. He returned three times just to talk to us. We talked for hours and not once did I see Robin show signs that he was tired.”

“What really surprised me is that he gave something that is really personal to him. That is out of his responsibilities as a brand endorser but he did it,” he continues.

Robin gave one of the shirts he uses for his prayer sessions. “Sabi ko sa kanya, etong pangdasal ko na to, ang daming humihingi. Hindi ko to binigay pero ibibigay ko ito sayo. (I told him, there are so many people who asked me for this. I didn’t give it to them but I am giving this to you.)”

A progressive approach

Lim and Padilla pride their approach towards OFWs as progressive.

“Nagsimula kami sa malasakit. Pero progressive kami sa approach. Sa mga performances, yung mga nagawa na namin, hindi na namin inuulit. (We started with compassion. But we are progressive with our approach. When it comes to performances, we do not repeat what we have done already.),” Robin explains.

This kind of approach is what MoneyGram also applies to their business. “It’s a very transparent service. MoneyGram doesn’t have hidden charges. Whatever amount the OFW sends, it is the exact same amount that their family in the Philippines receives*,” says Lim. “Of course we are improving on other services. It is progressive.”

These are just some of the ways that MoneyGram brings families closer. The brand has been to Japan, Singapore, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon to name a few out of over 200 countries and territories. For this year, the company has laid out more plans to touch the lives of more Filipinos with Robin actively pitching in for ideas.

Lim enthuses, “Getting someone to represent your brand is easy. But how to effectively use him, you use him to grow the business and touch the hearts of the people. For us, there is equal importance to these two. Robin touches the heart of each and every Filipino outside this country. This is how business should be about.”

“Yung samin, gusto na lang naming iparamdam sa mga OFWs na andito ako para paligayahin kayo. Kahit isa, dalawang oras. Hindi mo na mabibili yun. (For us, we just want to make OFWs feel that I am here to make you happy even if it’s just for an hour or two. There is no price to that happiness.),” says the actor.

“Ang pagsabi ng bayani, hindi sa salita yan kundi sa gawa. Ang mapangiti mo ang mga taong ito, ito na yung pinakasimpleng pwede nating gawin para pasalamatan sila. (You shouldn’t only call them heroes, you should act on it. Making these people smile is the least we can do to thank them.),” he closes.

Endorsements from top caliber celebrities are indeed, one of the great tools that companies nowadays employ to find that "hook" among its consumers. MoneyGram, with its dealings with Robin Padilla, was able to strike that goldmine of connecting with its market. However, what simply sets them apart is the genuine love and compassion of their endorser, to the strong mass of OFWs across the globe that the company serves. A truly unique, and a heartwarming relationship between MoneyGram and its endorser. Aptly put, quoting Alex Lim and Robin on what sets them apart, "being with MoneyGram, you look beyond business. For us, it's all about service, na "Galing Sa Puso" (service from the heart).
