SM cultivates livelihood opportunities for smallholder farmers

SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farming Program equips farmers with practical backyard and small-scale farming techniques.

The SM Group continues to enable inclusive development by equipping smallholder farmers with practical, sustainable farming skills, empowering them to uplift their livelihoods and strengthen food security in their communities.

At the center of this initiative is SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) Farming Program which has trained 32,359 farmers. On a groupwide level, SM Foundation and Philippine Geothermal Production Company, among others, have trained over 49,000 farmers nationwide to date.

In 2025, the KSK program will expand to more rural communities, including underserved areas in Northern Mindanao, Bicol, and parts of Visayas, bringing opportunities closer to where they are most needed.

“We believe inclusive growth starts at the community level,” said Cristie Angeles, SM Foundation’s Assistant Vice President for Livelihood and Outreach Programs. “By investing in smallholder farmers, we are not only helping secure local food supply chains but also creating pathways to improved quality of life in the rural sector.”

Through hands-on learning, KSK equips participants with practical backyard and small-scale farming techniques aimed at improving crop quality and productivity. More importantly, the program helps connect them to local markets and SM’s broader supplier network—fostering cooperative formation and enabling more stable, long-term income for farming families.

These efforts align with findings from the Asian Development Bank, which identify smallholder farmers as the backbone of food systems in developing nations, representing 84% of all farms and producing nearly a third of the world’s food. In the Philippines, where many are farming less than a hectare of land, access to knowledge, technology, and markets is critical.

To deepen market linkages, SM launched the SM Weekend Market, a platform that enables local farmers and agripreneurs to directly offer their produce in high traffic mall locations. The weekend market helps local farmers reach new customers, from everyday shoppers to mall employees and tenants.

SM’s commitment to community extends across its businesses. Through Philippine Geothermal Production Company (PGPC), SM supports urban agriculture initiatives in partnership with the Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems, promoting sustainable gardening and identifying farm sites for long-term use.

Together, these initiatives reflect the SM Group’s broader mission to serve as a partner for inclusive progress by creating meaningful, inclusive opportunities that support rural development, enable livelihood, and strengthen local economies.

SM harnesses business ecosystem to support an evolving job market

An applicant takes the first step in joining the country’s workforce at an SM job fair.

SM Investments Corporation (SM Investments), the parent company of the SM group, is harnessing the strength of its diverse business ecosystem to help bridge the country’s skills gap and prepare the workforce for the demands of a rapidly evolving, tech-driven economy.

With interests across retail, property, banking, and investments, SM is aligned with the implementation of the Enterprise-Based Education and Training (EBET) Framework—a newly enacted law aimed at strengthening public-private collaboration, especially in the industry and education sectors. The EBET Framework promotes industry-driven apprenticeships and training programs that equip Filipino workers with job-ready skills aligned to actual market needs.

“SM is able to function at its optimum because of the skills of our people. As our businesses continue to grow, so too is our need for more skilled and resilient professionals to add to our workforce. We shall continue to do our share to upskill and professionalize the Filipino workforce to make them competitive in the ever-evolving job market,” said Mr. Frederic C. DyBuncio, President and CEO of SM Investments.

He added that SM’s responsibility to contribute to a skilled, resilient workforce goes beyond employing them within the SM ecosystem.

“Whether they work for us or even in other companies, we are committed to equipping them with the right tools, as we have been doing so with our investments in education through institutions like the National University and Asia-Pacific College, both non-profits and of course the SM Foundation, which has been graduating scholars for more than 40 years,” Mr. DyBuncio said.

Right people, right jobs

As of 2024, SM has over 142,000 employees across its ecosystem of businesses operating in key areas nationwide, making it one of the country’s top job creators. A majority of job functions in SM are in sales, engineering, IT and other STEM-related positions.

SM Investments’ vice chairperson Teresita Sy-Coson is a member of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Education and Jobs group, a public-private partnership formed in 2022 to help address employment gaps.

A key initiative resulting from this partnership are job fairs mounted in SM malls across the country as part of the group’s J.O.B.S. (Job Opportunities Building Skills) program.

Since 2024 until May 2025, SM has hosted 244 job fairs in its malls, with 8,095 employers and 149,626 job seekers participating and 20,616 hired on the spot.

Just recently, BDO Unibank launched an accelerated hiring process for IT and cybersecurity professionals. Among the positions offered were for project management, cloud technologies and operations, security analyst and security engineer, customer relationship management delivery, among other IT-related jobs.

Better education, better opportunities

In 2024, The SM Foundation welcomed more than 1,100 new college scholars, its largest batch to date. The program has nurtured over 4,600 graduates since its founding. In a recent alumni homecoming, 925 graduates across 27 batches shared their career journeys, with a majority now gainfully employed across various fields.

Additionally, 71% of the alumni have pursued further studies, including master’s degrees, PhDs, secondary degrees and other professional programs.

The SM Foundation Scholarship Program provides full tuition coverage, comprehensive enrichment activities, part-time jobs, internship placements and potential career opportunities within the SM Group.

National University, one of the oldest educational institutions in the country founded in 1900, was acquired by SM in 2008 and has since embarked on a long-term campus expansion strategy to make education within reach. With the expansion, NU is aiming to reach 100,000 students in 2027.

While some programs in NU, particularly in Allied Health and Engineering, are long-established, of note are the courses offered in their College of Computing and Information Technologies that lean towards the future of digitalization, among them: BS Computer Science with specialization in Digital Forensics and Machine Learning; BS Information Technology with specialization in Mobile and Web Applications and Multimedia Arts and Animation.

Asia Pacific College, founded in 1991 as a partnership between SM Foundation and IBM Philippines, has been championing an industry-based curriculum that combines traditional classroom learning and hands-on experience calibrated to produce competitive IT professionals.

APC’s Multimedia Arts program is notable for combining technology and creativity, merging current disciplines in the creative field and the relevant knowledge of the digital creative tools currently used in the industry.

APC recently announced that 97.28% of its graduates as of 2024 have successfully secured employment after graduation.

A Culture of Doing Good: SM invests in quality education through Asia Pacific College

Asia Pacific College (APC), a part of the SM group, continues to invest back in its students and the school through degree programs certified by international and local standards institutions. With a grand vision of university status on the horizon and strategic partnerships with esteemed institutions such as the University of Adelaide to bolster the quality of education it provides, APC is proving that it is in the business of social good.

A group of freshman students pose for the camera during their student orientation at the APC Auditorium as the school year 2024-2025 starts.

The SM group’s advocacy in championing education was realized when SM founder Henry Sy, Sr. through SM Foundation, Inc. partnered with IBM Philippines to establish APC in 1991 as a non-stock, non-profit institution.

“APC envisions becoming a leading institution in the region,” said APC President Dr. Ma. Teresita ‘Tata’ Medado. “Aiming to become a university is our mission in the next 4 to 5 years. APC has proven excellence in innovative teaching and learning. It is our goal to expand programs and reach out to more students especially those from underserved communities.”

At the start of the year, APC received certification from the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) for the following programs: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Multimedia Arts. APC holds the distinction of being a Center of Excellence in IT Education since 2007 and a Center of Development in Computer Engineering since 2009.
APC’s computer engineering, computer science, information technology and multimedia arts programs are now certified by the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Standard.

The AUN-QA certification indicates that the programs recognized have met the high standards of quality in terms of teaching, research, and overall academic delivery.

“This recognition is a testament to our commitment to excellence in education and our dedication to providing top-tier academic programs,” added Dr. Medado.

APC’s international accolade is further complemented by its consistent delivery of quality education retaining its Autonomous Status from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for seven consecutive years. The status was granted by CHED citing APC’s steady high performance in areas such as curriculum development, faculty qualifications, research output, and community service.

Meaningful partnerships

The institution first established a landmark partnership with Carnegie Mellon University- Australia (CMU-A) in 2022 and continues to expand its collaboration with the University of Adelaide (UofA) in 2024. This led to the delivery of capacity-building programs for faculty, staff, and government professionals, with the support and funding from Australia Awards Scholarships, a program offering candidates from a wide range of countries to undertake postgraduate studies in Australia.

Student welfare is also a part of APC’s initiatives with the recently launched Digital Defender Program in the last quarter of 2024 together with Gogolook, a key player in the TrustTech industry. The Taiwan-based developer introduced the Whoscall application, a global anti-scam software that provides users with top tools and free features to help them avoid online scams.

APC students join the launch of GogoLook’s Digital Defender program, a new partnership of the college to equip the community with cybersecurity measures for an empowered and safer digital space.

“We seek to empower students with greater awareness of online safety and cybersecurity through this app,” said Dr. Medado.

“The value of GogoLook extends to professional ethics and character formation. We are preparing our students to become responsible global citizens,” she added.

As part of APC’s vision to become a university, Dr. Medado said the school aims to be more responsive to industry needs in order to bring access to quality education for all.

For the coming year, APC aims to uphold the standards of quality education that it has set in its QS 5-star ratings across four categories namely: inclusivity through a wide array of scholarships; online learning via Hyflex (Hybrid-Flexible), which emphasizes empathy, equity, and engagement; flexible teaching methods; and, employability with 92.8% of graduates securing key positions in the industry.

APC is now focusing on improving the category of internationalization emphasizing transnational collaborations, exchange programs, international students, and other related initiatives.

This is aligned with its mission of giving educational opportunities through differentiated and enhanced pathways to help develop productive citizens of the global economy.

Watsons end 2024 with 1,166 stores, continues to expand its community pharmacy format

Further expanding into community pharmacy, Watsons Philippines opened more than 50 stores outside of Metro Manila.

Watsons Philippines, a leading health and beauty retail brand under the SM Group, concluded 2024 with 1,166 stores, as part of its strategic expansion. The company opened 80 new stores last year, with more than 50 of these outside Metro Manila.

The Watsons brand also opened its 8,000th store in Asia at the Mall of Asia last year, led by Dr. Malina Ngai, Group CEO of AS Watson Group. She shared how the opening of the 8,000th store marks a significant milestone in their global expansion, “The Philippines has been selected for this momentous occasion because it’s one of the fastest-rising economies in Asia and a strategic market for AS Watson. This vibrant and highly potential market has a young demographic that increasingly focuses on health and beauty, aligning perfectly with Watsons’ expertise.”

Expanding into community pharmacy

Since its first store opened in 2002, Watsons Philippines has grown significantly through a joint venture between the SM Group and Hong Kong-based A.S. Watson & Co. Ltd. The brand continues to enhance its presence nationwide, making healthcare and beauty products more accessible to Filipino consumers.

Last year’s new store openings include key cities and municipalities in Visayas and Mindanao, reflecting Watsons’ commitment to reaching communities in need.

A recent study by Bain and Company, titled “Asia-Pacific Front Line of Healthcare 2024,” reveals that about 85% of consumers in the region prioritize healthcare maintenance, with 51% willing to increase out-of-pocket spending for improved health outcomes and experiences.

Jared de Guzman, Customer Director at Watsons, emphasized the brand's focus on community pharmacies. “Watsons is not only expanding in malls but is also committed to establishing a strong presence in local neighborhoods,” De Guzman said. “By the end of 2024, we have 400 community stores throughout the Philippines, ensuring accessibility and convenience for our customers.”

Watsons began its community pharmacy journey in 2015 with its first store in Pateros. Today, the brand operates in three formats: Watsons Pharmacy, with more than 1,000 locations in various settings; SM Beauty in 76 SM Stores; and LOOK, a multi-brand outlet at SM Aura and SM Mall of Asia.

De Guzman highlighted the significance of these community pharmacies as a growth driver. “Our community stores bring essential healthcare products closer to home, catering to the convenience sought by our busy shoppers. They have become vital destinations for health, beauty, and wellness needs.”

Watsons continues to serve a diverse consumer base, from health-conscious individuals to trendsetting beauty enthusiasts, reinforcing its position as a trusted provider in the health and beauty sector.
