American rock band Train is set to perform at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on December 7, 2011. They are the band behind the hits “Meet Virginia,” “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)”, “Hey, Soul Sister,” “If It’s Love” and “Marry Me.”
Train was formed in San Fransisco, California in 1994 and the current members are Patrick Monahan (vocals), Jimmy Stafford (guitar) and Scott Underwood (drums). Touring with the band since 2009 are Jerry Becker (keyboards, guitar) and Hector Maldonado (bass, vocals, percussion).
The band first shot to fame in 1998 with the release of their first album which had the hit single “Meet Virginia”. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). Since then the band has had numerous hit singles on Billboard charts and their other albums were also certified platinum. The “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)” from their second album was on the Hot 100 chart for a year and won two Grammy awards in 2002 for Best Rock Song and Best Arrangement.
Train scored another Top 20 hit with “Calling All Angels” from their third album and it was even used in the hit TV series One Tree Hill. The band’s other songs were also used in movie trailers and even advertising campaigns. “When I Look to the Sky” was used in the trailer for the 2004 movie Jersey Girl; “Ordinary” was first featured in Spider-Man 2 then in the 2007 TV series Heroes.
The band took a three-year hiatus after the release of their fourth studio album, “For Me, It’s You.” They returned with their highly-successful fifth studio album “Save Me, San Francisco” in October 2009. Upon its release, the lead single “Hey, Soul Sister” reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the most downloaded song on iTunes in 2010, the best-selling single in Columbia Records history and certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA. This 2011, Train was awarded Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 53rd Grammy Awards and Top Rock Song at the Billboard Music Awards 2011. The album’s follow-up singles “If It’s Love” and “Marry Me” have also been certified gold and have been getting consistent radio airplay not just in the USA, but also in the Philippines. “Marry Me” was again used in the TV series One Tree Hill.
Train has toured extensively since 2009. Early this year, they were invited to perform at the Dubai Jazz Festival, and the Pop Festival in Bogot. Just a month ago, they concluded a co-headlining, full-scale summer tour with Maroon 5 which took them to over 40 venues across the USA.
The band is reportedly working on their sixth studio album, tentatively scheduled for release in early 2012. While Train is keeping busy in the studio, fans can listen to their brand-new songs “To Be Loved,” which is featured on the soundtrack album of the movie Abduction starring Taylor Lautner and “Brand New Book,” the theme song of The Biggest Loser in the USA.
