Three OPM acts to watch out for in 2013

There are three Original Pilipino Music (OPM) acts that you must watch out for this year 2013! 

Young, talented, and oozing with mass appeal, they are a glimpse of the future of the Philippine music industry.

We’re talking about rock band Letter Day Story, balladeer-songwriter Myrus, and boy band 1:43 (pronounced as “one forty-three”). These three, who are all managed by public relations and social media expert Chris Cahilig, have been making waves across all media platforms.

LETTER DAY STORY, composed of rockers Aldrick “Dex” Yu, John Oliver “Oli” Agustin,  Chrisanthony “Not” Vinzons, and Emil Joseph “EJ” Arabit, won the Best Rock/Alternative Recording trophy at the 2012 Awit Awards for their song “Save Me.” They won over the other nominees, who are all more established and highly-respected bands and solo artists.

Their latest digital single, “Maiwang Mag-isa” written by Agustin is currently receiving a lot of airplay over radio stations nationwide.

Earlier, Letter Day Story also won at the 2010 Awit Awards for their song “Martilyo,” which they recorded with Gloc-9, also for Best Rock/Alternative Recording. 

They’ve recorded 11 singles that all made it to the Pinoy MYX Countdown. They released three albums namely “Sulat Aral Kuwento,” “Sama-Sama,” and “Breakaway” all from Sony Music. Likewise, they endorsed brands including Revicon Forte, Mossimo, Vans and AXN.

They’ve also appeared in many TV shows including “Umagang Kay Ganda”, “Unang Hirit”, “Music Uplate @ ABS-CBN” and have performed in major shows organized by MTV, MYX, and Alliance Francais (Fete dela Musique).

MYRUS, who delighted listeners with his remake of the 1970s love song “Sayang” (originally by Claire dela Fuente) has reinvented himself from being one of our most favorite romantic balladeers into one of the country’s most sought-after singer-songwriters.

In 2012, Myrus has released a critically acclaimed album titled “Wanted: Just Alive” featuring his original compositions “Pusong Lito” and “Sige Na Nga.” An intriguing song about being torn between two beloved, “Pusong Lito” became a monster hit and was named as the No 5 most popular OPM song in 2012 by the Philippine Music Charts. It was also used as a soundtrack of Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teen Edition in ABS-CBN and its official music video and lyric videos has garnered over 10 million views in Youtube so far.

In a few weeks, the public will hear three of Myrus’ compositions as soundtracks of the most anticipated primetime soaps in ABS-CBN. His original composition for his co-talents 1:43, “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” will be one of the soundtracks of Coco Martin’s new fantaserye “Juan dela Cruz” while “Pusong Lito” and his new hit single “Hiling” will be included in Angeline Quinto’s romantic comedy soap, “Kahit Konting Pagtingin.”

Myrus has proven himself not only as a singer, songwriter, vocal arranger, producer and creative artist but also as an effective and dedicated advocate for the local music industry. He earned everyone’s respect as an OPM activist during his stint as the Project Head of “Tunog Natin.” In December, Myrus was declared as a UH Morning Star by the GMA-7 morning show, “Unang Hirit.”

Myrus is acclaimed as “The Sentimental Prince of OPM” because of his romantic flair and smooth vocals. He has won prestigious awards including a Gold Record for his debut album “Love Cycle” under Sony Music, an ASAP 24K Artist Award, the Top Entertainment Award for Best RnB Artist and nominations in the 2010 Awit Awards and the First Philippine Radio Music Awards.

1:43 (ONE FORTY-THREE) is currently the hottest and most popular boy band in the Philippines, and they have steadily and impressively expanded their fan base in just two years.

The 1:43 hit, “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” has topped numerous year-end music charts of 2012 and the song’s music video was hailed as one of the Most Viral Videos of 2012 according to YouTube Philippines. To date, its official music video, reposts and lyric videos have received over 30 million views on Youtube. It is also one of the most downloaded songs in MyMusicStore, Videokeman, iTunes Philippines, and Sun Cellular and ranked No 2 in the Philippine Music Charts tally for 2012, next to Gloc-9’s “Sirena.”

The best thing about 1:43 is that they are living proof that Filipino talents can successfully hold their own against the K-Pop fever. Their powerful mass appeal led to their guestings in “ASAP,” “KrisTV,” and in “Sarah G” to name a few. 1:43 have been declared as one of the UH Morning Stars of the GMA-7 morning show, “Unang Hirit”.

Composed of Anjo Resurreccion; Goldmon Aquino; Kent Malunda; and Yuki Sakamoto have recorded two albums-- “Time for Love” and “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” under MCA Music and were included in OPM compilation albums “Tunog Natin: Songs from Home” and “40 Most Requested Love Songs.” They have been nominated twice in the Awit Awards for Best Christmas Song and Best New Group.

The boys of 1:43 are expected to duplicate their success in 2012 with the chart-topping single “Halika Na” and numerous product endorsements line-up.

A study by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) shows that 70 percent of Filipinos are lacking in important nutrients. This unhealthy diet creates a vicious cycle: when we feel sick or weak or tired, we lose our drive to engage in healthy physical activities such as sports or exercise. Lack of nutrients

For example, the FNRI’s Recommended Nutrient Intake (RENI ) on a daily basis for Vitamin A is 550 micrograms for male adults (ages 19 years to 65 years and above) while 500 micrograms are recommended for female adults (ages 19 years to 65 years and above).  However, the 2008 survey shows that actual average Vitamin A intake among Filipino adults is just 499.6 micrograms, while the elderly only take in 379.9 micrograms daily.

In the case of Vitamin C, the RENI for male adults (19 years to 65+ years old) is 75 milligrams while the RENI for female adults (19 years to 65+ years old) is 70 milligrams. The 2008 survey however shows that on the average, Filipino adults only consume 44.7 milligrams of Vitamin C daily, while the elderly consume 44.5 milligrams daily.

As for calcium, the RENI for  male adults are 750 milligrams for those aged 19 to 64 years old and 800 milligrams for those aged 65 years old and above. The RENI for female adults are 750 grams for those aged 19 years to 49 years old and 800 grams for those aged 50 years old and above.

According to the 2008 FNRI survey, the actual average daily calcium consumption among adults is only 370 milligrams, while the elderly only consume 330 milligrams of calcium every day.

Iron consumption among Filipino adults is also below the RENI. The RENI for iron among  male adults aged 19 years to 65 years old and above is 12 milligrams. The RENI for iron among non-pregnant female adults for those aged 19 years to 64 years old is 27 milligrams, while the RENI for those aged 65 years and above is 10 milligrams of iron.

Actual average iron consumption among Filipino adults however, was found to be only at 9.4 milligrams daily, while the average consumption among the elderly was even lower at 7.5 milligrams a day.

The 2008 FNRI survey also found that 65 percent of Filipinos across population groups are not taking enough calories to meet their daily energy requirement. 

The RENI pegs the energy requirements for Filipino male adults as follows: 19 to 29 years old, 2490 kilocalories (kcal); 30 to 49 years old, 2420 kcal; 50 to 64 years old, 2170 kcal; and 65 years old and above at 1890 kcal.

For female adults the energy requirements are: 19 to 29 years old, 1860 kcal; 30 to 49 years old, 1810 kcal; 50 to 64 years old, 1820 kcal; and 65 years old and above at 1410 kcal.

On the average however, Filipino adults only consume 1915 kcal daily while the elderly consume even less, with only 1436 kcal daily.  According to FNRI’s computation, these figures mean that 65 percent of Filipinos are not getting enough energy for their everyday activities.

Supplement for peak performance

So how do we change to a healthy lifestyle and be at our best? Obviously, we need to commit ourselves first to a healthy diet. The FNRI website (www.fnri.dost.gov.ph)  provides an illustrated, dietary guide called the Filipino Food Pyramid to help us make the right food choices for optimum health and nutrition.

Besides switching to a healthy diet, Filipinos also need to take health supplements to fill in the nutrition gaps on days when, for one reason or another, one’s food choices are less than ideal.

There are encouraging signs that more and more Filipinos are becoming educated about the value of nutritional supplements and they are taking more of these. FNRI surveys show in 2003, only 22.9% of Filipinos said they took health supplements.  In 2008, that figure had risen to 46.8%

The top two reasons these people gave for taking supplements were (1) health and (2) extra energy . Other reasons were “doctor-recommended,” “perform better in school/work,” and “not getting enough vitamins from the diet.”

Daragang Magayon: An Istorya ni Mayon, An Epic Love Tale at the CCP this Feb 8

The legend of Mayon’s origins has been told and re-told through  generations and remains very much a part of the Bicolano culture and imagination. Fabled for its beautiful symmetry, Mayon Volcano has always inspired poets, painters and musicians. And, there are many works of art that depict and pay tribute to its beauty.

When clouds sheath the peak of the perfect cone of the Mayon Volcano in Albay, Bicol, locals say that the lovers Magayon, the lovely maiden after whom the volcano is named, and her handsome Ulap, must be kissing.

The myth of Daragang Mayon is a timeless tale of love that almost every Bicolano knows.   It is the story of Magayon (beautiful maiden), the only daughter of chieftain Makusog, and Ulap (Cloud), the brave son of a chieftain from another region.  They fall in love and are engaged when Pagtuga, a jealous suitor foils their plans to marry.  Pagtuga kidnaps Makusog and threatens to kill him unless Magayon consents to marry him instead of her beloved Ulap.  To her great grief, Magayon gives up Ulap to save her father’s life.  Magayon and Pagtuga are about to be wed when Ulap disrupts the wedding and slays Pagtuga.  Magayon rushes into the arms of Ulap but  is struck by an arrow.  As she lay dying in his arms, Magayon is fatally stabbed in the back by one of Pagtuga’s men. The ill-starred lovers are laid to rest, together for eternity, in a mound of earth that grew bigger and bigger with the passage of time, eventually becoming the volcano that is known as Mayon.

This February, the month of hearts and lovers, Filipino audiences will have the chance to witness a unique and exciting reprise of this age-old and romantic love story, retold through music, dance, poetry and film, in DARAGANG MAGAYON:  AN ISTORYA NI MAYON slated on February 8,  2013, with    matinee performance  at 3pm and Gala performance at  8pm, at  the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Blvd, Pasay City.

Daragang Magayon is a presentation of E-Dance Theater, the Provincial Government of Albay, Bicol University in cooperation with Goodwill Bookstore and Ballet Manila.  The production is supported by the Bicol Provincial government as part of its efforts to revitalize the tourist development program, highlighting Albay’s rich cultural heritage.

Daragang Magayon:  An Istorya ni Mayon  boasts of a new twist---the use of multimedia---to tell the story of how Mayon volcano was born.

Adding luster to the production are two of the country’s foremost artists who collaborated on Daragang Magayon.  National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario (Rio Alma) penned the poetry for this new production.

Albay poet laureate Abdon Balde Jr. did the dramaturgy for the production, adapting the Mayon legend for stage. Aimee Escasa and Boni Ilagan did the storyline and script, while Leo Abaya and John Batalla did the set and lighting designs respectively.  Filmmakers Chuck Escasa, Niko Salazar and Henry Posadas worked on the filmic elements of the production that included animation, adding to the visual excitement of the production.

Gerald Mercado did the choreography and direction for Daragang Magayon.

Daragang Magayon features the dancers of E-Dance Theater led by Ea Torrado as Magayon, Victor Maguad as Ulap, Francis Cascano as Pagtuga, Pamela Josef as Usa, Marcus Tolentino as Makusog and Roduardo Ma and Earvin Guillermo alternating as Linog.  The show is highlighted by the special participation of Ronnie Lazaro as Gugurang, Pontri Bernardo as the Aswang, soprano Stephanie Quintin, tenor Jay-El Viteno, Bass Jonak Del Fierro, and performing groups  E-Dance Theater, UP Rondalla and Novo Concertante.

Star World throws AI Season 12 bash at URBN

Enjoying the wonderful world of Star World's American Idol ! I enjoyed being the part of Team Mariah! Do you know why and what about?  Here. 

To celebrate the premiere of American Idol Season 12, Star World treated 150 lucky members of the press, Twitter personalities, the hottest celebrities and some big AI fans to an exclusive viewing party at URBN Bar and Kitchen at the Fort Strip, Bonifacio Global City. 

Hosted by DJ Tracy Abad of Mellow 94.7 and DJ Suzy from Magic 89.9, the event happened on January 17 and lasted from 5 PM to 12 MN, with many surprises for special guests that stoked their American Idol excitement and made their viewing experience all the more enjoyable.

As guests entered the club, they were asked to choose between joining Team Mariah or Team Nicki, a play at the rumored rivalry between two of the new American Idol judges, legendary diva Mariah Carey and rap superstar Nicki Minaj. I am with Team Mariah! 

Fantastic giveaways were presented to each guest based on which team they joined along with other choice Star World items. The program began with welcome remarks from Jude Turcuato, VP Territory Head of Fox International Channels, Philippines before the premiere episode of American Idol Season 12 was screened at 6 PM.

At this event, even the commercial breaks were highly anticipated, with prizes from Star World being raffled off to lucky viewers during each break. A repeat screening was held at 8 PM for all the die-hard AI fans in the audience, with more prizes being raffled off at every commercial break.

Super happy to be one of the winners in the raffle, I got the Devant Blu-ray Disc Player!

The party continued after the final screening as DJ Nina lured everyone onto the dance floor with her Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj mash-ups.

IBALONG – A Dance Musical Of Bicolano Epic

“Ibalong” highlights the preservation of our environment in a magical and musical setting. Entitled after Legazpi City’s week-long festivity, “Ibalong,” the musical tells the story of Handyong and his warriors who come to Bicol – formerly known as Ibalon – and wage war against beasts and monsters pillaging the land’s natural wealth. Handyong mightily battles creatures bearing a solitary eye and three throats, several winged sharks, and wild carabaos.

In introducing civilization to the barbaric land, Handyong matches wit and might with the scheming snake, Oryol.  A master of deceit, Oryol disguises herself into a sweet, young lady in order to seduce Handyong. But not to be outwitted, Handyong eventually makes Oryol fall in love with him.

Their love story – between a warrior and a monster – defines the greatness of Bicol as it explores an individual’s capacity for good and evil, and a land’s history marked by progress and destruction.

Tanghalang Pilipino caps its 26th season with a dance-theatre musical interpretation of the Bicolano epic, “Ibalong,” adapted for the stage by prolific playwright Rody Vera and directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio with Carol Bello’s musical direction, and Alden Lugnasin’s choreography.

IBALONG opens with a gala premiere on February 8 at the Tanghalang Aurelio V. Tolentino, Cultural Center of the Philippines at 8pm. The musical will run until March 3, 2013.

SYNOPSIS

The play will focus on the middle story of the Ibalong epic fragment, since we feel this is the most substantial of the three seemingly separate stories of the short poem. We focus on Handyong when he and his warriors come to Bicol and wage war against the wild creatures of the land. Handyong uses might to wipe out the wild creatures perceived as barbaric and monstrous. There are beasts with one eye and three throats.  Winged sharks ploughing the deep, wild carabaos were all subdued.

It seems that Handyong the mighty has begun to subdue the land of Bicol in the name of civilization except for Oryol, the sagacious snake. Handyong is eluded by Oryol. she then appears as a sweet young thing, as a way of seducing him. Oryol was a champion of deceit.

This is why Handyong finds a way to lure Oryol to help him. In the end, Oryol agrees to help Handyong destroy her own kind for a great deception that our hero is able to heap on the snake. Handyong makes the snake monster fall in love with him.

The land is set free when Oryol betrays the wild creatures of the land of Bicol. Handyong's heroism is fully established. But not without a tinge of guilt.

This love story between a mighty warrior and a monster becomes the central focus of the Ibalong, the capacity for good and evil, for progress and destruction, love and deceit are equally imprinted in the descendants of Handyong. The precarious balance between these two opposites defines the greatness of the land of Bicol.
