Ben&Ben and SB19 release “Kapangyarihan” performance video

The visuals take a closer look at the intentions of the people we will put in power in the next few days

Ben&Ben and SB19 make an important stand on issues concerning power abuse and public service with the release of “Kapangyarihan” performance video.

With theatrical performance as its overarching theme, the visual conveys the song’s message through a fitting medium that reflects the realities of life.

“Theatre is meant to be experienced live but we used its intrinsic quality in presenting the ‘Kapangyarihan’ music video,” says Dexter M. Santos, the MV director. “By infusing the music video with narrative, choreography, set, and costume design as well as video, we hope to deliver a sincere and emphatic performance.”

Shot in a stylized but dramatic approach, the video is interspersed with snippets of historical context and stories that question leaders and call for a meaningful change.

“The audience is reminded that this is a performance - yet a call to action is demanded from them; that there are bigger and stronger issues that we have to address after watching the performance,” Ben&Ben shares in a collective statement.

The release of the performance video comes just in time for the upcoming 2022 elections, where more than 60 million Filipinos decide on who will lead the country in the next 6 years. As Ben&Ben puts it, the visual narrative is a “constant reminder that speaks to everyone involved in an election.”

“To those in power it’s a reminder that the root of what they should be doing is service to the public, and if there is an abuse of that power then truth shall always prevail, no matter how anyone tries to hide it,” the nine-piece band adds. “To the people, it is a reminder not to put politicians on a pedestal, and that we must always hold those we elect accountable for their actions.”

“Kapangyarihan” marks the second time that Ben&Ben and SB19 have collaborated on a track. Both critically acclaimed groups first worked on the rousing pop ballad, “MAPA (Band Version),” which has racked up more than 25 million streams on YouTube and Spotify combined.

Ben&Ben and SB19’s “Kapangyarihan” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines. Watch the MV here.

Besting 31 other candidates with her unique beauty, wit, and passion for her advocacies, Pasay City’s Celeste Cortesi clinched the Miss Universe Philippines 2022 crown. The Filipino-Italian beauty is also now the new Miss PLDT Home titleholder.

The 24-year-old Cortesi is no stranger to pageants, after representing the Philippines at the Miss Earth competition in 2018. In this year's competition, Cortesi showed grace, intelligence, and candor in conquering the Miss Universe Philippines stage. She shares, “I am excited to be part of the Miss Universe Philippines Organization. I will be working with them to advance my advocacies for women’s education and protection of our country’s indigenous people and rich cultural heritage.”

Besides her advocacies, Cortesi proves that she’s a queen with a uniquely beautiful heart. Throughout the Miss Universe Philippines pageant, she has been outspoken about her deep love and care for her family. “Since I was a kid, my parents have taught me the power of gratitude and kindness for everyone I meet. I always believe that being grateful creates a ripple effect and in turn, brings the best out of people.”

Cortesi further emphasized the importance of strong bonds with family and loved ones. In her winning answer at the final question and answer portion, she said, “If I could stop time, I would spend it with my family, especially my mother. It’s been two years since I haven’t spent time with my family because they live in Italy, and I came here in the Philippines just by myself. If I had a chance to spend one day, I would definitely be with my mom, and I would just tell her how much I love her and I miss her.”

As the newest PLDT Home Ambassador, Cortesi shows that strong connections can powerfully conquer distances. After winning the Miss Universe Philippines title, she even shared a heartwarming tribute for her mom on social media with the caption: “Far from each other, but always connected. To make you proud is the greatest fulfillment of my life.”

J&T Express and realme join relief efforts for typhoon Agaton victims

Weeks following the onslaught of tropical storm Agaton over Eastern Visayas, communities continue to bear brunt of the impact with many still left displaced and in need of aid. Responding to calls for assistance, the country’s leading express delivery company, J&T Express and top global technology brand realme organized a joint relief operation for the residents in Brgy. Buenavista, Abuyog, Leyte which was among the worst-hit towns at the hands of the typhoon.

J&T Express and realme provided hygiene kits and realme Powerbank 2 with 10,000 mAh battery capacity to over 220 affected families who barely receive assistance due to their remote location.

“In time of adversities, especially on what happened to the residents of Abuyog, Leyte, it breaks our hearts to see how the people suffered in this kind of situation. Without hesitation, J&T Express took the opportunity to give its helping hand as we believe in the spirit of “bayanihan”. We are also thankful for our partner, realme, for working with us on this initiative for the people in Leyte,” said Zoe Chi, Vice President of J&T Express.

The relief operation was supported by the local government with Mayor Lemuel Gin Traya of Abuyog, Leyte in attendance during the distribution activity. The relief operation was also assisted by MSWDO Bernard-a Belacho and Brgy. Buenavista Chairman Pio Alvero together with Abuyog Philippine National Police.

“No effort is small during these tough times. In line with realme’s commitment to give back and pay it forward, we’ve joined forces with J&T to provide our realme Powerbank 2 to help power up the families’ mobile devices since electricity lines are down in the area. We hope that these powerbanks can help them communicate with their loved ones and get back to their daily lives soon. We are grateful that we were able to help these families support their most urgent needs,” said Austine Huang, Vice President for Marketing of realme. The residents of Brgy. Buenavista expressed their gratitude through their warm smiles.

Prior to this activity, J&T Express has already extended logistical support to facilitate fast delivery of in-kind donations by several NGOs and partners in affected provinces despite tough conditions and inaccessible roads. J&T Express has always been an advocate of the Bayanihan spirit.

A New Star Is Born: Shanne Gulle, Kumu’s Sing For The Stars First Grand Champion

A gentle-spoken young woman with a powerhouse singing voice launches into her music career in the aftermath of Kumu’s first virtual singing contest.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better word to describe Shanne’s hard-won victory than the word “Deserved”. Hailing all the way from General Santos City, in the southern part of the Philippine archipelago, Shanne sang her way to the finish. Winning was no easy feat, but she had what it takes: talent, dedication, and the courage to take a leap of faith. And let’s not forget the final piece of the puzzle: the technology to reach the farthest corners of the globe, which is where Kumu comes in handy.

The Trajectory To Victory

If you want to reach the stars, you have to break the stratosphere, which is a need answered by having the best technology can offer. Kumu’s Sing For The Stars was the vehicle aspiring singers and musicians rode to see how high they can reach. Hundreds of aspirants joined the country’s first-ever virtual singing contest and called upon their supporters to fuel the journey via the giving of virtual gifts. And much like an actual rocket launch with parts disengaging along the way, there were eliminations that narrowed down the contestant number from 100 down to 30, to 15, and finally, the top 3.

No rocket launch is complete without people to guide its trajectory, which here comes in the form of our guest judges: Grammy Award-winning Michael Bublé, and Tony Award-winning Lea Salonga, along with other big names in the music industry such as KZ Tandingan and Ben&Ben.  It isn’t really the end for those who didn’t make it to the top—a diamond in the rough is still a diamond beneath the surface, and during Sing For The Stars’ virtual press conference, Lea Salonga mentioned that aspiring musicians can still get discovered even if they did not win the singing competition they joined, which is a very encouraging statement to hold on to. Many can start their music journey, but only one can call herself Sing For The Star’s Grand Champion and enjoy the perks that come with it—the title belongs to Shanne Gulle alone.

The New Star Under The Telescope

The now Grand Champion was then a regular Kumunizen live streamer who started her Kumu journey in 2020 at the fresh young age of 16. She had a burning desire to grow her confidence and self-esteem, saying I wanted to be a live streamer because I wanted to grow and interact with people. She found the Kumunity to be a very welcoming place, filled with people generous with their time and support, and surely, her confidence began to grow. As Shanne put out her music content, she saw a promotion for Sing For The Stars on Instagram, showing two faces of two huge music industry names, one of which caught her attention: Ms. Lea Salonga. Her friends rightly pointed out that these types of singing competitions are not common, and was encouraged to give it a shot, to which she excitedly obliged.

The stars aligned for Shanne, and she beat more than a hundred other aspirants to the top. Kumunizens’ kind nature was also properly represented in the rapport Shanne had with the other finalists, Archie Aguilar and Christian Bahaya. The three bonded behind the scenes as they watched the finale stage being set up. With her Kumu friends along with her that day, she came home bagging the grand prize: $10,000, a one-year contract with Warner Music Philippines, and her own Kumu concert, which happened last April 24. In it she sang huge pop hits such as Olivia Rodrigo’s “Happier” and “Driver’s License”—good song choices to highlight her winning vocals. Last on the prize list was a one-on-one coaching session with Michael Bublé himself—a zoom session Shanne mustered up more of her confidence to join.

An Advice From Michael Bublé

I got anxious, I was already overwhelmed because of the win, and then suddenly, it was time to get into the zoom call with Michael Bublé—I was really worried about my English”, Shanne recalled. The call came and went without a hitch, and Shanne experienced what could be one of the most memorable zoom calls she’ll have in her whole life. She came prepared with a lot of questions, one of which was asking Bublé how to overcome the fear of performing in front of a huge audience. “Always surround yourself with positive people,” Bublé answered, as they—unconsciously or deliberately—will lift you up. He also reminded Shanne to prepare herself spiritually for a performance, saying “pray before beginning, and don’t forget to say thank you afterwards.” Finally, he invited her to sing with him when he performs in the Philippines in a possible future opportunity.

Of all the lessons she learned during her whole contest experience, Shanne remembers her lesson in “Consistency” the most, saying you need patience and determination to make it into the top 30, top 15, all the way to the top 3. If you really want it, you need to strive for it.
