How retailers can beat inflation with automated demand forecasting and replenishment this Christmas

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Christmas season is always a business growth opportunity for many retailers due to a sure spike in consumer spending. In fact, Filipinos were found to spend 331% of their monthly income during the holidays in 2021. Yet, a successful season for many retailers this year is threatened by the continuing impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain, along with the current economic challenges such as soaring inflation, increasing price of petroleum products, and weakening consumer confidence.

“Similar to retailers globally, Filipino businesses also grapple with the increased supply chain challenges from both the pandemic and the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. What’s more, consumers are equally experiencing the brunt of this situation, making the climate harsher for many enterprises,” shared Kristie Davison, Vice President Sales Asia Pacific at RELEX Solutions. “The most efficient way for retailers to navigate these uncertainties would be to plan how to maximize sales while minimizing loss.”

Seasonal inventory management is often difficult due to advanced purchasing before the season and a high risk of the residual post-season stock. Christmas, in particular, means that there’s a high turnover of product lines from one season to the next. Think about how a lot of smartphones are sold during the holidays but the selection is always different per year. Furthermore, brands also often launch new products that are systematically pushed throughout the -ber months as seen in 11.11 and 12.12 promotions, requiring retailers to assess demand for each. These situations highlight how crucial demand forecasting is in order to get the right amount of stock-keeping units (SKUs) and ensure a return on investment. Unfortunately, many retailers manually forecast demand, posing high risks of inaccuracy that can lead to over- or understocking.

Automating demand forecasting helps businesses achieve optimal outcomes by improving the on-shelf availability of seasonal products and reducing residual stocks when the season ends. A good forecasting model for seasonal planning includes a reference product that can be specified against seasonal or event-specific indices to calculate data-backed forecasts for new items. Empowering businesses to search the historical assortment for items with similarities to those being introduced and build a forecast can potentially drive significant improvements to availability and inventory values while considerably reducing markdowns.

With Christmas spanning four months in the Philippines, smart replenishment also contributes to improving a brand’s responsiveness to consumer demands. A good solution is to deliver only a part of the forecast demand to stores at the beginning of the season to avoid moving goods among shops. Once holiday shopping starts, SKUs at individual stores can be replenished through pull control that is based on the latest sales, store-specific forecasts, and actual inventory. This enables retailers to effectively respond to local conditions with respect to external factors such as weather or a change in competition for an individual store. When products are bought in advance, push control should be used toward the end of the season to ensure that seasonal products don’t pile up unnoticed in the central warehouse. An ideal management system allows allocations to be directed to the stores with the best chances of selling the products such as those with the highest sales and no excess inventory.

“It is important to remember that a model of operations is not necessarily the best one simply because it has been used for years,” added Davison. “Digitizing seasonal inventory management helps retailers make seasonal sales sustainable, achieve better results, and prepare well for such events.”

ASEAN-India Music Festival 2022 to highlight university-centered music programs before and after main festival at Purana Qila, Delh

The pre- and post-festival music programs will take place at Ashoka University, Government schools in association with the Global Music Institute and North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong

ASEAN India Music Festival (AIMF) returns this year with extensive music programs to be held at some of India’s premier universities. The three concerts will be part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations of the ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations.

Multi-genre contemporary acts from several ASEAN countries and India will be performing at three concerts which will be held at Ashoka University, Government schools in association with Global Music Institute and North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. Similar to AIMF—which will take place from the 18th to 20th of November at Purana Qila, New Delhi—the concerts and workshops will be free of charge.

Serving as a prelude to the main festival event, the Ashoka University concert will take place on November 17, 2022, 7:00 PM onwards and will showcase music from Tri Minh’s Quartet (Vietnam), Instamuzika (Malaysia), RizerXSuffer (Cambodia), and Empty Wallet (Brunei Darussalam).

ASEAN India Music Festival’s closing ceremony will be hosted on November 20, with Minister of External Affairs Hon'ble Dr S. Jaishankar as chief guest.

On November 21, a lecture demonstration and workshop will be given at aGovernment school in association with the Global Music Institute in Delhi. Guests will also be treated to demonstrative performances from Lao Traditional Music Troupe (Lao-PDR), Makaohang (Thailand), and Bayang Barrios at Ang Nilayagan (Philippines).

Finally, wrapping up this year’s series of music festivities is the Shillong leg of the ASEAN-India Music Festival on November 22 at North-Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya, which aims to increase the students and youths’ awareness and celebration of music from the ASEAN region, which in turn help propel interaction and tourism between India and ASEAN.

The concert will feature performances from Shillong’s very own Colours, MRTV Modern Music band (Myanmar), Riau Rhythm (Indonesia), and Linying Band (Singapore). The concert starts at 5:30 PM.

“It is very rare that there is such a vast representation of music from Asean region where India has a lot of commonality in our shared cultural histories and traditions. Therefore it is only natural that the youth and the young generation of India should get to hear and have direct interaction with these musicians rarely seen and heard in India,” Sanjeev Bhargava, Director of ASEAN-India Music Festival 2022, shares. “These workshops and interactive sessions will go a long way in spreading awareness of common musical traditions between ASEAN and India."

The university concerts and lecture-workshop program are organized by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India in collaboration with SEHER, who are also the main organizers of the second edition of the ASEAN-India Music Festival 2022.

Hello Glow Ultralight ++Matte Sunscreen

No time to add sunscreen to your skincare routine? In a tropical country like ours, sunscreen is a skincare must-have to prevent sun damage, which causes the skin to age faster and may cause skin cancer. And now, it’s much easier to incorporate sunscreens in your skincare routine, thanks to Hello Glow and the newest addition to their product line – Ultralight ++Matte Sunscreen that offers the best of both worlds: sun protection and skincare – an all-in-one product that’s packed with amazing benefits!

Hello Glow’s Ultralight Matte Sunscreen comes on the heels of the bestselling Hello Glow Advance Rejuvenating Set. Many fans of the skincare brand sent in requests, and as a result, the company came up with a bigger version of Ultralight Matte Sunscreen.

“When we do product development, it’s imperative that we stick to the core of our brand, #BecauseYourSkinMatters. The feedback from our patrons are equally as important as the innovations we develop. In fact, the sunscreen has changed the landscape of skincare and Hello Glow Ultralight ++ Matte Sunscreen is definitely something to look out for because of its skin-loving ingredients, not to mention the sun care protection it can give your skin,” said Hello Glow brand manager AJ Pantaleon.

Hello Glow Ultralight ++ Matte Sunscreen has 4% niacinamide, which has anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties and may decrease pigmentation from melasma and treat dark spots. Even better, it can do so with less side effects than other ingredients, and it may be an effective topical treatment for mild to moderate acne. Boosting Hello Glow’s sunscreen’s anti-aging powers is the synergy of niacinamide with this product’s other active ingredient, hexylresorcinol. The powerful combination of the two also helps treat uneven skin tone.

More than that, Hello Glow Ultralight ++ Matte Sunscreen contains no less than 3 types of ceramides, which helps restore the skin-barrier and retain hydration, keeping the skin healthy, firm, and supple. RAFI and ICTSI Foundation expand One to Tree program to Luzon, support more than 50 farmers

(Batangas, Philippines)Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI), a non-profit organization that focuses on upholding the dignity of man by working with communities to elevate their social, physical, and economic well-being in the Philippines, officially announced its partnership with ICTSI Foundation, an active environmental protection advocate, in expanding its One To Tree (OTT) program in Luzon.

RAFI and ICTSI Foundation marked this project milestone with a ceremonial tree planting activity in the municipality of Balayan, Batangas province on October 28, 2022. The project aims to grow 45,000 timber and fruit trees in a 56-hectare area in the next 3 years.

RAFI and ICTSI Foundation’s implementing community partners consist of people’s organizations (POs) such as the Samahan ng mga Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries of Brgy. Lucban, Balayan; Calan Farmers Association of Barangay Calan, Balayan; and Samahan ng mga Magsasaka at Kababaihan of Brgy. Dao, Tuy, Batangas, in coordination with the Center for Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (CARRD).

“One development pillar of ICTSI Foundation is Environment Protection and we are happy to partner with RAFI, a known and credible foundation with its 20-year tree-growing advocacy,” ICTSI Foundation Executive Director Filipina Laurena said. “This project is different in a sense that it addresses various concerns simultaneously – revival of nature, community development, livelihood generation as well as beefing up food supply in the community.”

Grassroots community engagement

Over 50 farmer-members of these POs have committed to participate in seedling production, site preparation, planting, monitoring, and maintenance activities for native tree growing.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was also signed with the MLGUs of Balayan and Tuy to formalize the collaboration between and among partners, including the provision of capacity-building assistance for the farmer-members of the peoples’ organizations.

Cacao, rambutan, avocado, coffee, guyabano, pomelo, lanzones, and kalamansi are some of the native trees to be planted and nurtured at the vacant, rolling, and idle agricultural lands in sugarcane farms in the area.

In his speech during the ceremonial tree planting activity, Mario Aplon, President of Samahan ng Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries from Brgy. Lucban, Balayan, said the farmers are being taken care of–from tree planting to monitoring–and the benefits out of this project will go for generations to come.

“This is the reason why we readily accepted and grabbed this project opportunity from RAFI and ICTSI Foundation,” he added.

Enhancing biodiversity and socioeconomic well-being

“Over the last 20 years, our approach in RAFI has always been holistic. Aside from taking care of the environment, we make sure that the people who take care of the trees are also being taken care of,” shared Amaya Aboitiz, President and CEO of RAFI.

“We recognize that this is a community effort; we cannot just stop at taking part in tree planting activities. We also need to nurture it for it to grow, and, most of all, we need to take care of the communities who take care of our trees.”

RAFI OTT aims to increase the country’s forest cover, enhance biodiversity, and support bio-sequestration to help mitigate the impact of climate change in the Philippines. For the last 2 decades, it has planted 8,327,846 native trees and 1,275,500 mangrove seedlings in 10,410 hectares of land.

In 2021 alone, RAFI planted a total of 641,311 native trees through OTT programs and partners in Visayas and Mindanao. Through its community-based approach, the tree-growing project will continue to expand the program in the coming years to ensure the survival of native trees in the long-term, and uplift farmers through socio-economic development programs and assistance.

Organizations can further aid this cause by visiting the RAFI OTT website: https://onetotree.org/#donatesec

-------------------------------------------
The RAFI One To Tree (RAFI OTT) program has been active in reforestation and conservation efforts for over two decades and has achieved more than 80% survival rate for native tree growing. RAFI OTT assists companies in the service delivery of Environmental Compliance Certificate requirements set by the Philippine Government, as well as helping them achieve carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation goals.

The ICTSI Foundation is a dynamic and active collaborator of the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. Group that cares and looks out for not only the communities of the Group’s business units but society at large. Anchored on youth development, social welfare and protection of the environment, the Foundation helps keep these communities safe, sustainable, thriving and empowered.
