TANGHALANG ATENEO
1972 - 2014

Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company of the Loyola Schools, Ateneo de Manila University, weaves into its work the theatrical traditions of the University’s sesquicentennial past: the devotion of the salon de actos at the Escuela Municipal, the eloquence of the Ateneo Dramatics Guild, the joie de vivre of the Ateneo Players Theater, and the innovative spirit of the Ateneo Experimental Theater.

Like these companies, Tanghalang Ateneo uses theater to foster eloquentia, sapientia, and humanitas – the pillars of Jesuit pedagogy. It sees itself as a theater company in the service of student formation, and by extension – given the Jesuit ideal of magis – a theater in service of the nation.

Since its founding in 1972 (and formally recognized five years later), Tanghalang Ateneo has grown from a fledgling band of student players to one of the country’s leading school-based theater companies.

Tanghalang Ateneo’s repertoire of plays is daunting: world classics, Filipino originals, and documentary texts turned into theater pieces. Its productions are noted for thought, generosity, and energy, while its lingua franca on stage is both Filipino and English. Its members come from diverse academic fields. In fact, many have pursued careers in theater, television, and film; many more use their theater experience to excel in management, law, teaching, media, and cultural work.

World class professional theater actors have graced its shows, and several outstanding designers and choreographers have served as members of the artistic staff.

To name a few, in our previous season we have invited Mr. Floy Quintos, a well-renowned playwright who has just released his first anthology, Ms. Frances Makil-Ignacio, a respected actress in the business, Ms. Myra Beltran, an established international choreographer and Mr. Gino Gonzales, a world-renowned production designer.

Moreover, its audiences extend outside the campus to embrace theater patrons within and outside the metropolitan area.

In addition, Tanghalang Ateneo has won two Aliw Awards for Best Production and another two for Best Direction for its previous production of Sintang Dalisay.

In its 35th season, “Ang Oresteyas” had been nominated in the Aliw Awards for Best Non-musical Production as well as Best Direction and has likewise been nominated in the following categories: Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Featured Actor.

The company has also received production grants from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Loyola Schools, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation, and the Japan Foundation.

Furthermore, Tanghalang Ateneo continues to makes itself known from the microenvironment of the Ateneo de Manila University, garnering nominations such as Project of the Year and Best Organization in the Council of the Organizations of the Ateneo de Manila University (COA) Awards.

Its shows have also been shown in campuses and venues across the country and abroad, notably in Shanghai and Taiwan as part of the Festival of the Asian Pacific Bureau of Theatre Schools, and in Belarus, Minsk for International University Theatre Association Student Theatre Festival.

The company’s past achievements have also facilitated the creation, in SY 2000-2001, of a degree program in Theater Arts within the Fine Arts Program of the Ateneo de Manila University.

Tanghalang Ateneo products educate and delight; they stimulate the imagination and provoke thought. Jesuit pedagogy fuses with theater arts to interrogate the Filipino social world so that students can invent themselves as critical Filipinos: sharp in thought, expressive in action, deep in faith and attuned to others – fellow players and audiences whose lives intersect with their own.

Salvador Bernal, named National Artist for Theater and Design in 2003, Doreen Fernandez, a notable writer and professor, and Nenita Escasa who had also taught in the Ateneo for almost 30 years were among the company’s advisers in the early years.

Ricardo Saludo, who, at that time, was a faculty member of the Department of English and of Communications became the first Moderator and Artistic Director when it gained university recognition in 1979.  He directed Tanghalang Ateneo’s first productions before handing the task over to Dr. Ricardo G. Abad.

Dr. Ricardo G. Abad succeeded him and has remained the Artistic Director and Moderator of Tanghalang Ateneo since 1984. He has directed over 80 productions, and has been awarded twice for his work as Outstanding Moderator in the University’s Service and Excellence awards (1991 & 1999) and by the Metrobank Foundation in 2001 with the Most Outstanding Teacher Award. He has also won the Best Director for the Aliw Awards with his work in Tanghalang Ateneo.

This year, Mr. Glenn Sevilla Mas came aboard the Company as its Artistic Director and Moderator. He has represented the Philippines in theater festivals and conferences all around the world and has won the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature a whopping nine times. He is currently  a professor in Ateneo de Manila’s Fine Arts department.

‘FLUID ’ – A Reinterpretation of the Palanca Award-winning play set to open on July 24

The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Technical Theater Program Batch 111 proudly presents a reinterpretation of the Palanca Award-winning play, “FLUID”.

Written and directed by Floy Quintos, the comedy is about young Filipino contemporary artists struggling to make a name for themselves as they negotiate the tricky terrain between Love, Art and Compromise.

“ FLUID ” is set to open on July 24 and shall continue to run on July 25 and 26 (1:00 pm and 7:00 pm) at the 5/F SDA Theater, School of Design and Arts Campus, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 950 P. Ocampo St., Malate, Manila. A press preview is set on July 23 at 7 p.m.

“FLUID” is written as a series of scenes in different locations featuring three pairs of characters who seemingly have nothing to do with each other. Amir is a struggling and frustrated young painter whose life is about to be changed by Mira a wealthy art collector who dreams of discovering new talent. Jom and Alben are passionate theater actors torn between their passion for their craft and the lure of fame. Renata is a seemingly batty orchestra coordinator out to defend the dignity of her orchestra when it is hired to play at a society wedding by the overbearing events coordinator, Simone. All these unique and clashing characters come together unexpectedly at an art exhibit where their impulses lead to joyful mayhem.

The cast of “FLUID” is made up of professional actors. Red Turnip Theater’s Ana Abad Santos who originally created the role of Mira in 2004 reprises her role. Kalil Almonte last seen in “Sintang Dalisay” and “Games People Play” plays Amir. JC Santos, fresh from his tint in Hong Kong’s Disney Land and Singapore’s Universal Studio, plays the ambitious Jom while Russell Legaspi last seen in this year’s Labfest plays the earnest Alben. Amihan Tanedo Ruiz and Gel Basa both last seen in “Breakaway Antigone” play Renata and Simone respectively. Musical Theater actor Tony Falcon also appears in the show.

“FLUID” had its successful runs in the University of the Philippines, Diliman (2004) and in Ateneo de Manila University (2007). For this new production, “FLUID” is being restaged by the Benilde Technical Theater Batch 111.

The artistic and creative team of “FLUID” is led by Floy Quintos (Playwright and Director), Ellawyn Cruz ( Set Designer ) and the students of DLS-CSB Major in Technical Theater Batch 111.

Dubai is building 'Mall of the World'

Dubai, the glitzy emirate known for its love of grandiose projects said it is now planning to build the biggest mall on the planet, the Mall of the World!

The world's first temperature-controlled city, Mall of the World, located along Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, occupying 48 million square feet, complete with theme park, theatres, five miles of covered streets and 100 hotels. It will also contain health resorts, a Celebration Steet modelled on the Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona and 'retail streets network' that will stretch over four-and-a-half miles. In fact, the ambitious emirate has dubbed the project a 'temperature-controlled pedestrian city'.

The shopping mall itself will occupy eight million square feet, housed below a glass dome, with other attractions extending beyond the central shopping area. The grand project is part of Dubai's bid to become a year-round tourism destination, despite soaring temperatures in summer that can reach nearly 50C.

The new mall, which will be a city-within-a-city, will be the emirate's chance to attract visitors even in the height of the summer, by providing a completely climate-controlled experience. The plan is to create a cultural area, with theatres hosting shows at West End and Broadway levels, as well as a network of streets that will be entirely climate controlled. The eight million square foot shopping centre will be housed under a dome, while the streets will also be covered so that tourists can shop without getting too hot in the relentless heat of the summer months.

In the cooler winter months, the dome will open, allowing people to shop in the fresh air, closing as the summer heats up.

It will also be a short drive to the world's tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,717ft.

Sheikh Mohammad stated: 'Our ambitions are higher than having seasonal tourism - tourism is key driver of our economy and we aim to make the UAE an attractive destination all-year long."

'This is why we will start working on providing pleasant temperature-controlled environments during the summer months.'

Dubai Holding, the developer owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum said that the project "will comprise the largest indoor theme park in the world" under a glass dome that would be opened during winter.

The seven-kilometre (4.35 mile)-long promenades connecting the facilities would also be covered and air-conditioned during summer, it added.

Dubai hopes the "Mall of the World" can attract more than 180 million visitors each year.

United Arab Emirates is known for its numerous malls and many hotels, including the Dubai Mall, touted as the world's largest shopping, leisure and entertainment destination. It is also home to the world's tallest tower, Burj Khalifa.

Dubai has established itself as a global hub for air transport and transit trade, as well as a regional financial centre.

And it beat off opposition from Brazil, Russia and Turkey in November to win the right to host the World Expo trade fair in 2020.

The emirate's economy was hit in 2009 by the global financial crisis, but it has since made a strong comeback, thanks to growth in the trade, transport and tourism sectors.

The Philippines' SM Mall of Asia has 407,000 square meters of total floor area, while SM MegaMall has over 500,000 square meters of total floor area.

SM Prime, the country's largest mall operator, expects to have a network of 50 malls in the Philippines with a gross floor area of 6.6 million square meters by the end of 2014.
