WWF-Philippines Calls for Filipinos to Join Earth Hour 2023: The Biggest Hour For Earth

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - The countdown to the Biggest Hour on Earth is set for March 25, Saturday, when millions of people across the world will converge around major world landmarks, cities, and communities to switch off their lights for 60 minutes – starting at 8:30 pm, as part of a global movement to save the planet. In the Philippines, national landmarks, office buildings, government offices, and individual houses will all join in as a sign of a broader commitment towards addressing our planet's sustainability.

Josefina 'Joy' Belmonte - Mayor of Quezon City, Ms. Katherine Custodio - Executive Director, WWF-Philippines, Atty. Angela Consuelo Ibay - WWF-Philippines Climate and Energy Programme Head and National Director for Earth Hour Philippines, Ms. KD Montenegro - Individual Donors Program Manager, WWF-Philippines, and Ms. Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski - WWF Philippines’ Earth Hour Ambassador

The Earth Hour global celebration started as a symbolic event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has grown into one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental movements spanning over 7,000 cities and 193 countries and territories. The Philippines joined in 2008, making this year’s Earth Hour the fifteenth time the celebration is observed.

Several community partners will also be participating in this year’s main Switch Off event in the Quezon City Memorial Circle: World Vision Philippines, Oxfam Pilipinas, Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Association of Young Environmental Journalists, and De La Salle University among others. Their participation demonstrates solidarity among fellow environment and development groups in coming together for a common cause to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.

As humanity's unsustainable demands on the natural world are leading to climate breakdown, habitat loss, and decline of wildlife, Earth Hour is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of March as an opportunity to invite individuals and institutions to take substantive measures for the planet. The core message of this movement lies in going “Beyond the Hour” – essentially, the actions people can do after the lights go back on.

"This year's Earth Hour is about the Biggest Hour for Earth – an hour wherein we begin to do good for our shared tomorrow and our shared home. As we face an uncertain future with our planet's deteriorating biodiversity, further threatened by our changing climate, two of the biggest challenges we confront, we must act sooner and more decisively. Thus, we are reaching out to governments, cities, businesses, and individuals to be part of the solution in bringing positive changes for the planet,” said Atty. Angela Ibay, Climate and Energy Program Head of WWF-Philippines and Earth Hour Pilipinas National Director.

“The Philippines has repeatedly been on the top list of countries most vulnerable to climate change, and we are a mega-biodiverse country. Many do not realize that nature is our climate's secret ally. We want Filipinos to not only appreciate what we have, but we also stand to lose. Thus, we all need to be responsible in shaping our future, and hopefully, we'll be changing the ending for the positive – for both people and the planet,” Ibay said.

WWF-Philippines’ Earth Hour Ambassador Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski shared what this movement means for everyone saying: “Having been an Earth Hour Ambassador for so long has taught me one important lesson, it is that there are always people who care regardless of their nationality, their social status, their job, or even their age.”

“There are so many people who care about the planet. We have to keep that in mind amid so much negativity. The fact that we are able to see each other again face-to-face after what seemed like an eternity being in lockdown shows that things can get better for the planet,” she said.

This year’s Earth Hour celebration in the Philippines will be the first in-person event since 2020 before lockdowns due to COVID-19 forced the celebration to go online. For a decade since its inception back in 2007, Earth Hour focused on building awareness of climate change. In 2018, the movement’s focus pivoted to include both climate and nature as their interconnectivity became more evident, with human activity causing direct negative impacts on nature and the environment, contributing to biodiversity loss and climate change.

While COVID-19 has prevented people from interacting in person, this has been an opportunity to connect to millions of people in digital spaces and engage with decision-making institutions to secure a new deal for nature with the aim of halting the loss of biodiversity by the end of the decade.

Quezon City has been a continuous partner of WWF-Philippines and Earth Hour for many years. Earth Hour was last held in Quezon City Circle in 2015. Quezon City was also a finalist in the recent One Planet Cities Challenge (OPCC) 2021-2022. OPCC is a friendly global competition initiated by WWF to recognize cities for their climate actions and ambitions and assess whether they align with the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement in limiting climate change to 1.5 °C.

“According to the UN, cities are responsible for over 70% of global carbon emissions. However, cities can also drive emission reduction efforts and transition to a carbon-neutral future. Recognizing the crucial role of cities in creating a sustainable future, Quezon City made a conscious and deliberate effort to address climate change from a local perspective,” said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

“We enhanced our local climate change action plan (LCCAP), which outlines our efforts up to the year 2050 to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. Integral to the development of the LCCAP was the conduct of a GHG emissions inventory, which allowed the city to measure and better understand the emissions contributed by different sectors. Based on the inventory, the stationary energy sector accounts for 60% of carbon emissions. This refers to fixed locations such as homes, buildings, and factories. Reducing emissions in this sector is critical. Hence, a combination of measures such as increasing the use of renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency are our priority actions,” Belmonte added.

WWF-Philippines Executive Director Katherine Custodio highlighted the importance of the in-person gathering, stating: "Earth Hour has always been about individual actions that taken collectively makes a difference. By having an event like Earth Hour we are affirming the power of our individual simple action. We are affirming that people care about our shared future.”

“You may have heard the argument that the Philippines emits only 0.39% of GHG-so why should our country commit to further reduction. Well, if all the countries that account for less than a percent in total account for a third of global GHG. That is a big component. Please also remember that we are one of the most impacted by climate change - and if we don’t act who will?” she added.

March 25 will also be the start of the annual Earth Hour Virtual Run, a self-paced virtual run that aims to promote a sustainable and healthy lifestyle, raise environmental awareness, and support conservation efforts of WWF-Philippines. The run will last for a month up to April 22, wherein participants can choose their running distances from 10 km to 60 km. The registration started on February 3 and will end on April 9.

KD Montenegro, WWF-Philippines’ Individual Donor Program (IDP) Manager said that the continuing partnership with Pinoy Fitness for this year’s Earth Hour Virtual Run reflects the “sustained commitment and responsibility towards protecting the environment.”

“Because we are runners and into fitness, we understand that a healthy environment is necessary for us to have a healthy body. Pinoy Fitness provides this platform for Filipinos to stay fit and give back to the environment. We believe in going beyond Earth Hour and literally going the extra mile to ensure a healthy future for everyone,” she added.

Earth Hour 2023 is co-presented by Quezon City Government, together with our Official Communications and PR Partner, COMCO Mundo League of Enterprises, and supported by the Department of Energy, Climate Change Commission, League of Cities of the Philippines, League of Provinces of the Philippines, Department of Agriculture, Court of Appeals, Department of Health, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Department of Information and Communications Technology, National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the National Parks Development Committee

City of Dreams Manila holds “A Walk to Save the Earth” and other activities for Earth Hour 2019

City of Dreams Manila in partnership with Bantay Kalikasan, ABS- CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc.’s environmental arm, is taking part in the global annual Earth Hour on March 30 through a program dubbed “A Walk to Save the Earth.”

More than the ceremonial one-hour lights-out activity, the event to be held at the luxury resort’s main casino entrance, highlights both proponents’ pledge for environmental protection and a sustainable future through practicing eco-efficient operations.

The resort’s Sustainability Ambassadors are leading the event with the participation of around 200 employee-volunteers of City of Dreams Manila and a contingent from Bantay Kalikasan for the symbolic walk at 8 p.m. around the property -- representing the two institutions’ solidarity towards Earth Hour’s goal of uniting people to take action on various environmental issues.

The symbolic walk is followed by the observance of the ceremonial switch off from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., simultaneous with other countries. The resort will be turning off the lights of its dome dubbed the Fortune Egg — City of Dreams’ and the Manila Bay area’s iconic landmark. The program then culminates with a set of compelling song and dance performances dedicated for the environment from the resort’s talented employees.

Other activities also include writing of personal pledges for a greener planet on a “Commitment Wall.” Moreover, to draw further engagement towards this cause, City of Dreams Manila encourages its guests to be part of this global environmental campaign by turning off the lights in their rooms, and join other guests in the resort’s dining outlets and public areas for the one-hour duration.

“City of Dreams Manila, together with Bantay Kalikasan, joins the many countries around the world in the Earth Hour to spark conversation and take action to help protect the environment and curb climate change. Together with the strong support of our more than 5,000 employees as led by our Sustainability Ambassadors, we pledge our commitment in conserving and being good stewards of the environment as well as in continuing to set the bar for a greener hospitality and entertainment industry in the country,” Kevin Benning, City of Dreams Manila Chief Operating Officer said.

An initiative of the World Wide Fund (WWF), Earth Hour started as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney back in 2007. Over the years, it has grown to become a global grassroots movement for the environment that inspired individuals, communities, governments, businesses, and organizations to take tangible action to address pressing environmental issues. In 2018, earthhour.org recorded a total of 188 countries and territories that have participated in Earth Hour. This year, with the theme “#Connect2Earth,” it encourages millions of people to speak up about why nature matters.

Sustainability at City of Dreams Manila

This year’s participation of City of Dreams Manila in Earth Hour is one of the many sustainability undertakings of the luxury resort to achieve its goals of enhancing eco-efficient operations.

To date, City of Dreams Manila has spearheaded various sustainable initiatives within the property under the program dubbed “Sustainable Dreams,” which implements the resort’s long-term sustainability program.

Among these are: a vermicomposting facility and greenhouse nursery on property; a holistic and sustainable coffee program for which it partners with local coffee farmers, and eliminates wastes by using coffee remains at the vermicomposting area; the use of biodegradable and compostable plates, utensils and take-out bags at The Garage VR Zone and food park; a dynamic employee volunteerism program that also covers coastal clean-up drives along Manila Bay; and mangrove and tree planting activities in Laguna and Cavite.

“There is a growing call to collectively step up for a sustainable future and we, together with the strong support of our employees, our guests, and the communities we partner with, aim to take an even active role to heed this call,” Mr. Benning stated.

Gia Ibay - Earth Hour Pilipinas National Director; Mr. Joel Palma - WWF-Philippines President and CEO; Ms. Iza Calzado - WWF-Philippines National Ambassador and Mr. Marc Nelson - WWF-Philippines National Ambassador

This year, Earth Hour’s Manila staging will come home to the iconic Cultural Center of the Philippines in Pasay City, the venue of the Philippines’ first Earth Hour switch-off event 10 years ago. Annually, Earth Hour attracts millions of people around the world to converge around major world landmarks, cities, and communities to hold switch-off events for 60 minutes – starting at 8:30pm, as a sign of commitment to address the plight of our planet and our people.

WWF-Philippines’ President and CEO Joel Palma shares his thoughts on Earth Hour’s global theme, “Collectively, we must now look deeper and see how our water, food and energy consumption is endangering our planet’s biodiversity. It’s time to connect to Earth and rekindle our role as stewards of the environment.”

From a symbolic moment to a social movement

Earth Hour started as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has since grown into one of the biggest global open-source movement for the protection of the environment in more than 7,000 cities and 180 countries.

Over the years Filipinos have embraced Earth Hour, inspiring climate action within our government, communities, businesses, and organizations. “Beyond the Hour” initiatives have inspired national advocacies pushing for low-carbon cities, renewable energy development, sustainable food production and consumption, forest and water conservation, and wildlife protection of endangered tamaraws, whale sharks and Irrawaddy dolphins among others.

Together possible

Earth Hour aims to raise awareness on the crucial importance of biodiversity as a viable resource link that families, communities, nations, and future generations all depend upon. Understanding this interconnectedness is key in solving Earth’s most pressing challenges.

Supporting Earth Hour’s vision, WWF-Philippines National Ambassadors Iza Calzado, Rovilson Fernandez and Marc Nelson led the campaign’s kick-off at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas last February 27, together with National Youth Ambassador Janine Gutierrez to help build public engagement.

Earth Hour highlights this year will include activity booths, exhibits and cultural performances by local artists to amplify #Connect2Earth messages creating a meaningful celebration to honor our planet. Earth Hour do-it-yourself (DIY) activities and partnerships with businesses and organizations are also encouraged to promote and further strengthen the grassroots movement here in the country.

Earth Hour Pilipinas National Director Atty. Gia Ibay talks about the Earth Hour 2018 #Connect2Earth.

Using this year’s official hashtag #Connect2Earth, WWF-Philippines is encouraging everyone to harness the power of social media and help share their commitment to a “one planet lifestyle” by sharing stories and photos of their sustainable living actions to care for our planet’s biodiversity via Earth Hour Philippines’ Facebook event page – http://bit.ly/EarthHourPH2018 that will go live by March 1, 2018.

WWF-Philippines’ Head of Climate and Energy Program and Earth Hour Pilipinas National Director Atty. Gia Ibay reiterates, “Sustained and concerted efforts are needed to help solve the planet’s deteriorating biodiversity that is further threatened by our changing climate. Governments, businesses and communities all win significant gains when we all work together and bring positive change for the planet.”

Earth Hour Prepares to Shine a Light on Climate Action

Global movement’s 10th switch-off slated for March 19

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10207015919249428&set=a.4823813106217.2161354.1023156562&type=3&theater

Earth Hour 2016 will be celebrated to bring together millions of individuals to shine a light on climate action and the potential of people to change climate change. It will focus on shining a light on various climate actions that individuals, communities, businesses and countries can take such as a transition to renewables, promoting sustainable food and agriculture, adopting climate-friendly legislation and business practices, supporting conservation projects and raising awareness on climate issues in schools and amongst the public.

As the world enters a new era of climate action, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) again urges its supporters to switch-off and shine a light on climate action.

From 8:30 to 9:30 PM on March 19, Earth’s most iconic landmarks will once more switch-off their lights for Earth Hour 2016. WWF-Philippines revealed its campaign plans at a kick-off led by its National Ambassadors Marc Nelson, Rovilson Fernandez and Iza Calzado, plus Earth Hour Steward Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworksi. Earth Hour, which began as a single-city event in 2007, celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2016.

Earth Hour Philippines’ main switch-off event shall be held at the Quezon City Memorial Circle from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on March 19, Saturday night. “It shall be a showcase of climate solutions,” explains Earth Hour Philippines Director Atty. Gia Ibay. “Stationary bikes will partially power this year’s event to show that united, Pinoys can light up this country with their collective energy. Together, anything is possible.”

Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off lights for 60 minutes to deliver a powerful message about the need for decisive climate change solutions. In the past decade, the movement has grown from a symbolic switch-off event in Sydney, Australia to the world’s largest open-sourced environmental campaign mobilising hundreds of millions of people in over 7000 cities and 172 countries.

The Philippines has been championing the switch-off since 2008 and has topped participation records from 2009 to 2013 – earning it the title of Earth Hour Hero Country. A growing list of allies has pledged to support this year’s efforts, led by government partners such as the Climate Change Commission (CCC), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Health (DOH), Department of National Defense (DND), National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP), League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP), Local Government of Quezon City, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

Corporate champions include ArthaLand, Banana Peel, Coca-Cola, Healthy Options, H&M Philippines, Philips, Starbucks and White Gold Club. Technical partners include Anakata and Solar Solutions.

Earth Hour is a media-driven campaign and shall be promoted through strong alliances with ABS-CBN, ABS-CBN RNG, ABS-CBN Sports and Action, BusinessMirror, BusinessWorld, CNN Philippines, Eagle Broadcasting Corporation, Eagle News, DZUP, FleishmanHillard, FocusMedia, Leo Burnett, Net-25, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Star, Orange Magazine TV, QCreativs, Radyo Pilipinas, Radyo Agila, Radyo Veritas, Rappler, Tech2Go, TV5 and Yuneoh. WWF is seeking more government, corporate and media support.

Social media users can promote their commitment to the planet by donating their Facebook feeds to spread climate awareness and action in a few clicks on earthhour.org/climateaction. Users can also use the hashtags #EarthHourPhilippines, #ChangeClimateChange, and #RenewableisDoable to promote climate solutions.

“Social media knows no physical boundaries and neither does climate change,” says Earth Hour Global Executive Director Siddarth Das. “A simple action on social media is the kind of powerful statement that can excite friends and communities to be a part of the climate action we need to take on this global challenge.”

Since 2007, WWF and Earth Hour teams worldwide have harnessed the power of the movement to raise support and funds for access to renewable energy, protection of wildlife and their habitats, building sustainable livelihoods and driving climate-friendly legislation and policy. WWF-Philippines in turn celebrates its 20th anniversary this 2016.

Earth Hour 2016 will be celebrated on Saturday, 19 March 2016 between 8:30 and 9:30 PM in the Philippines and across the globe.

PRO EARTH RUN to kick-start EARTH DAY 2014 celebration

Earth Day is Everyday, Everywhere for Everyone. Earth Day has become truly a dynamic celebration with a meaningful advocacy. This year’s celebration involves the holding of the “PRO-EARTH RUN” to formally launch and highlight the Earth Day 2014 Celebration and to mobilize resources to support the continuing advocacies of EDNPI on climate change and the conservation of the country’s biodiversity resources.

Year after year since the 1990’s, the Philippines participates in the worldwide celebration of Earth Day. The Philippines’ celebration is unique in that it is a coming together of government, civil society, and churches to highlight the country’s environmental health and renew their partnership to work for the common good.

Mr. Roberto Guevarra talkss during the media launch of Pro Earth Run
held at the Merrel branch, Market Market Mall, Taguig City
Since 1999, the partnership has evolved into a loose coalition called Earth Day Network Philippines (EDNPI) with a Secretariat that directly coordinates the Network’s members from local government units to non-governmental organizations, from business corporations to churches and academic institutions, and from big organizations to individuals who want to do something for the environment. Through Presidential Proclamations, Earth Day has become a permanent environmental holiday of the country and has become a fixture in the national environmental consciousness.

For 2014, Earth Day celebration gives focus to CLIMATE CHANGE. This year is especially important because we have just experienced the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda, which almost brought all our brothers and sisters in the Visayas and Northern Palawan down to their knees. More of these super typhoons are expected to come as a result of human-induced climate change.

Aside from the abovementioned, 2014 is also equally important for the Network because it is celebrating its 15th anniversary. It was in 1999 that Mr. Mark Dubois of Earth Day International visited the Philippines and helped form the Earth Day Network Philippines in the house of the late Odette Alcantara, the founding Country Coordinator. Since then, the celebration of Earth Day has become truly a dynamic celebration with a meaningful Main Event held in different areas of the country to highlight that Earth Day is Everyday, Everywhere for Everyone.

The Earth Day Network Philippines’ PRO EARTH RUN is presented by Manila Nature’s Link Corporation’s Malungai Life Oil (www.malungailifeoil.ph), a proudly Philippine-made all-natural concentrated vegetable extract noted by the Johns Hopkins University as the world’s first and only product developed from pure Moringa Oliefera seeds and leaves, and the United Parcel Services or UPS. The PRO EARTH RUN is also supported by First Gen, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Merrell – ProEarthRun’s shoe sponsor, St. Luke’s Medical Center – ProEarthRun’s medical partner, Greenlite Banner – ProEarthRun’s official printing partner, Globe, Holcim, The Body Shop, Coco Dolce, Business Mirror, The Manila Times, Malaya Business Insight, BusinessWorld, Circuit Magazine, 106.7 Energy FM, 107.5 WIN Radio, SM Tickets, SM Cinema, and the BGC.

The culmination of the celebration will be during the Earth Day 2014 Main Event. To be celebrated at the Quezon Memorial Circle, there is where we will be highlighting the network members’ efforts and achievements for the past year. The Main Event is also the occasion wherein the DENR Secretaries have presented the State of the Philippine Environment Address annually. Together with the Main Event is the SANDIWANG: Isang Diwa sa Pagdiriwang ng Kalikasan, an Interfaith Celebration of Earth Day that we intend to be a more artistic and cultural celebration.

Also in line is the Earth Day 2014 Advocacy Fair, where individuals can learn more on how they can participate or volunteer in the specific advocacies, programs, and projects of different organizations, national government agencies, and local government units.

Earth Hour 2014

Something revolutionary is happening in the coming days. Are you ready to use your power?

For the past few years, Earth Hour has made a massive impact around the world thanks to the power of the crowd. But for 2014, we want to make an even greater..

Earth Hour's mission is to unite people to protect the Planet.

Check the Earth Hour 2014 at www.earthhour.org.

Earth Hour - Your Power Amplified. Multiplied. Globalised. Saturday March 29th at 8:30PM. Use #YourPower at www.earthhour.org

In 2007, WWF-Australia inspired Sydney-siders to show their support for climate change action in the first ever Earth Hour event. It showed that everyone, from children to CEOs and politicians, has the power to change the world they live in. In Sydney, Australia, 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

In 2008, the plan was to take Earth Hour to the rest of Australia. But then the City of Toronto, Canada, signed up and it wasn’t long before 35 countries and almost 400 cities and towns were part of the event. It said something compelling to the world: that the climate challenges facing our planet are so significant that change needs to be global.

With the invitation to ‘switch off’ extended to everyone, Earth Hour quickly became an annual global event. It’s scheduled in late March – closely coinciding with the equinox to ensure most cities are in darkness as it rolled out around the Earth.

In 2011, Earth Hour saw hundreds of millions of people across 135 countries switch off for an hour. But it also marked the start of something new – going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action on climate change. In 2012, Earth Hour celebrated its largest event to date with more than 7000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories switching off their lights, and with hundreds of thousands of people accepting an 'I Will If You Will' challenge to take their commitment to the planet beyond the hour. With the power of social networks used to promote the campaign, Earth Hour is working towards an interconnected global community committed to creating a more sustainable planet.

Dimming the lights on 23 March is not only an exciting tradition at Hyatt Hotel and Casino Manila, it’s also an opportunity to experience the hotel and restaurants in a different light.

For inquiries and reservations, please call the hotel’s food and beverage reservations centre on +63 2 247 8666. Alternatively, e-mail cath.mn@hyatt.com or make restaurant reservations online by visiting manila.casino.hyatt.com.
