Ely Buendia unveils new “light and optimistic” single “Ate”

Legendary frontman Ely Buendia is back on our playlists with new song “Ate” to be released March 26 under his own label, Offshore Music Philippines.

After a year of the release of his tumultuous solo album “Method Adaptor” (2025), which garnered a string of praise from critics and fans alike, noted by Rolling Stone PH as “a sprawl of metaphors that thrive in paradoxes…”, and a continuously successful run of his intimate bar tour which shares the same name as the album, Buendia is far from taking a step back and is gearing up to expand his range and discography with solo single, “Ate”.

“I wanted to change the atmosphere a bit,” says Buendia in an interview about his upcoming single, noting the contrasting nature of his previous sonic masterproject and the new single, he pinpoints his intentions for shortly following up his grittier and more serious album, Method Adaptor, with a more “light and optimistic" new track. The song carries a softer tone in both instrumentation and lyricism, not novel to Buendia’s prowess but a stark difference to what the artist is currently known for. “The melody had such a nursery rhyme-feel which came directly from the harmonized lead guitar lines that go up the major scale,” Buendia discusses his rationality behind the inception of “Ate”. Saying as if the song itself embodies the mindset of seeing the positives in life’s ebbs and flows.

In addition with the idea of “Ate” being a break from the norm of the OPM icon’s current sound, the place where it was recorded was also something different for the “Bulaklak sa Buwan” singer, “I needed a change of pace. I love the weather there [Baguio],” citing a change in scenery was crucial in influencing the project. This overall chase for fresh air, perspectives, and sound were also present due to the inclusion of Shadiel Chan, music producer and label head of Nine Degrees North, where Buendia and his band recorded “Ate”. This marks the first collaboration between the Baguio producer and the singer. “Shad[niel] had a fresh take on everything. He works fast which I really like and had spot on instincts. I’m always up for working with new blood, there’s a lot you can learn from them.”

Speaking of young bloods, “Ate” was recorded by a slightly new set-up, with rising artists Dani Mendoza on keys and Jian Nisnisan on guitar, and alongside them were Chan on bass and Pat Sarabia on drums.

“Ate” by Ely Buendia is set to release on March 26 and will be available on all digital streaming platforms.

About Ely Buendia

More than the usual string of superlatives, Ely Buendia is a storyteller. Not just someone with above-average verbiage, or a propensity to weave hastily rhymed couplets. But the genuine article. And whether it’s with the massively popular Eraserheads, or with any of his latter-era pursuits (the genre-bending rock outfit Pupil, rockabilly meisters Oktaves, or the soul/funk collective Apartel), listeners are assured of both pop smarts and an indefatigable sense of invention. Buendia’s canon is a ride to be relished. From landmark Eraserheads classics (“Alapaap,” “Magasin,” “Ang Huling El Bimbo”) to smashers by Pupil in the mid-aughts (“Nasaan Ka?,” “Disconnection Notice,” “TNT,”), the tunes serve as balm to the weary soul. But the lesser-known items is where we are given a picture of Buendia’s creative breadth: the one-off release Wanted Bedspacer; In Love & War (made with rap legend Francis Magalona); collabs with the Itchyworms (“Pariwara,” “Lutang”); and, more recently with indie rockers Cheats (“Plunder My Heart”). Buendia is also committed to guiding a new generation of artists in the OPM scene. As co-founder and CEO of Offshore Music Philippines, he has shaped the future of Filipino music. Now releasing a new single, "Bulaklak sa Buwan" from the new album “Method Adaptor” under Offshore Music, Buendia offers a glimpse of his currency as a songwriter and musician. Music that is sure to inspire new and old fans alike.

Ely Buendia, Chito Miranda, and Arnel Pineda to headline ‘OPM Legends’ concert in Abu Dhabi

The three Pinoy rock trailblazers come together to bring decades of classic hits and unmatched artistry

Abu Dhabi is set to witness a truly historic night for Original Pilipino Music (OPM) as Ely Buendia, Chito Miranda, and Arnel Pineda unite on one stage for the very first time at the Etihad Arena on January 10, 2025. The highly anticipated concert promises an exciting celebration of music and legacy as it presents three rock icons who have left an indelible mark on the Filipino music landscape.

Fans can expect a powerful showcase featuring beloved anthems from each artist’s storied career, along with surprises that music fans would surely enjoy.

Ely Buendia, frontman and principal songwriter of the iconic Eraserheads, is credited for propelling Pinoy alternative rock to unprecedented commercial and artistic heights throughout the ‘90s and beyond. Apart from his timeless work with the Eraserheads, Buendia has successfully transitioned into a prolific solo act. His most recent album, Method Adaptor (2024), has garnered universal acclaim, recently winning Album of the Year at the New Hue Video Music Awards and Favorite Album of the Year at the 38th Awit Awards. He was also part of a historic San Diego Comic-Con panel promoting Eraserheads: Combo On The Run, the first Filipino film ever featured at the event, set for global theatrical release in February 2026.

Parokya Ni Edgar’s Chito Miranda has long been celebrated for incorporating humor, wit, heart, and originality into one of the Philippines’ most enduring music catalogs. With classic hits such as “Harana,” “Your Song,” “Pangarap Lang Kita,” “Halaga,” and “Inuvman Na,” PNE has produced songs that deeply resonate with Filipino audiences. The band’s signature fusion of rock, novelty, and authentic Pinoy storytelling reflects the creative ingenuity that has defined their decades-spanning success.

Arnel Pineda, the powerhouse vocalist responsible for revitalizing global rock phenomenon Journey, stands as one of the country’s most important international success stories. Since joining the multi-platinum supergroup, Pineda has captivated fans with showstopping vocals and dynamic stage presence. His debut tour with the band has racked up more than $35 million in sales, leading to legendary performances that include the Super Bowl XLIII pregame show and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. His journey from promising local talent to global rock frontman remains one of the most inspiring achievements in modern music.

The special gathering brings together three musical forces whose impact transcends genres, eras, and borders.

The OPM Legends is proudly presented by Live Nation, DVent Productions, and Tiana Entertainment bringing world-class Filipino talent to one of the region’s premier live entertainment destinations. Concert veterans Rhiza Pascua and Bojie Yangco, along with filmmaker and producer Diane Ventura, conceptualized the show with the intent of putting together some of the most prominent Pinoy rock legends on the international stage.

Ely Buendia marks triumphant comeback with new single “Bulaklak Sa Buwan”

Ely Buendia enters a new era of his solo music career with the release of “Bulaklak Sa Buwan.”

The fuzzy, alt-rock number serves as the first single off his upcoming sophomore album, Method Adaptor, which will be out on November 8, 2024, via Sony Music Entertainment and Offshore Music.

_____________________________

His latest track serves as his first solo release since 2021’s “Metro”

_____________________________

The track’s release coincides with the prevalence of fabricated stories and propaganda-driven atrocities in online spaces, challenging listeners to raise awareness for factual truth and combat misinformation.

“I’ve been watching documentaries a lot, and I tried to distill everything in one song,” the legendary Pinoy rock artist explains. “The track is all about the quest for the truth. It's about seeking knowledge while resisting the confines of dogma.”

Sonically, “Bulaklak Sa Buwan” stands out without the need to constantly show off. The disarming pop gem continues Buendia's knack for composure and effortlessness: his gift for melodies is still as sharp and instinctive as his best output with his previous bands, and his guitar work is still at its most ferociously sounding in over two decades.

Ely Buendia’s frequent collaborator and Pupil bandmate Jerome Velasco produced the song, delivering a pristine but straightforward production approach that doesn’t take away the material’s anthemic charm.

“I wanted it to be buoyant-sounding and surprising,” shares the award-winning OPM icon. “The song is very upbeat, and I utilized several modulation techniques to make it seem like the music goes higher and higher every time.”

“Bulaklak Sa Buwan” is accompanied by the release of a music video directed by Niko Cezar and Aimee Aznar of KNYA Collective. According to Ely, the visual narrative finds him wandering in the woods looking for a particular flower. “Upon finding it, I get into some upside-down vibes (like Stranger Things), getting transported into another dimension.”

Ely Buendia’s “Bulaklak Sa Buwan” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide. Watch out for the official music video on August 16, 2024, Friday at 6pm on Ely Buendia’s official YouTube channel.
