Safeguard officially launches Derma Sense

Safeguard introduces Derma Sense, its first-ever premium line of acne solution products. The brand unveils this latest innovation in collaboration with the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA) in a theater production dubbed “Hashtag: Pimples Anonymous,” an “informance” or information performance that explores teens’ stories of physical and psychological struggles against pimples and how they’re able to overcome these situations.

As part of its commitment in promoting health and hygiene education among Filipino families, Safeguard officially launches Derma Sense to help teens face up against acne.

Safeguard Derma Sense leverages Safeguard’s expertise in skin health and antimicrobial cleansing with the launch of a dermatologically tested line of face and body bars and washes that are proven to help visibly reduce acne in 89% of users.

“Bacteria are a critical root cause of acne and the first step in managing mild to moderate acne is keeping skin protected from acne-causing bacteria through regular cleansing of the skin using an antimicrobial soap,” shares Dr. Ma. Pilar Lagdameo-Leuenberger, Fellow of Philippine Dermatological Society.

“Safeguard Derma Sense recognizes that the effects of acne can be more than just physical, and that the brand has a role to play in empowering consumers, especially Moms and their teens, in facing up to acne,” Maro Torres, Brand Manager for Safeguard, said.

Acne vulgaris, also known as acne or red spots, is the most common skin disease worldwide. In a white paper released by the Skin Health Alliance, prevalence of self-reported acne among individuals age 15-25 is documented to be as high as 91%. The study further stresses possible emotional and psychological effects, to quote: “There is probably no single disease which causes more psychic trauma, more maladjustment between parents and children, more general insecurity and feeling of inferiority and greater sums of psychic suffering than does acne vulgaris.”

Dr. Susan Estanislao, Counseling Psychologist from the De La Salle University Manila, thus reinforces “the need for creating an empowering atmosphere that will help teens overcome these struggles.”

Safeguard Derma Sense advocates the adoption of a regular cleansing regimen with a well-tolerated antimicrobial soap that helps reduce levels of skin bacteria and play a part in early acne management. More importantly, it commits to helping empower parents and teens #FaceUp to acne through resources that aim to pioneer the understanding on the causes, consequences and potential treatment of acne.

Safeguard promotes handwashing through fun activities for kids

Procter & Gamble leads efforts to break the germ transfer chain

Safeguard opens Handventure Land yesterday, October 11 at Eastwood Mall as it continues to raise awareness on the importance of handwashing at 5 critical times: before eating, before handling food, after using the toilet, after touching pets and, most especially, after playtime. Safeguard Handventure Land features different activities and games for children, designed to encourage them to wash their hands after playing.

Maro Torres, Brand Manager for Safeguard, explains, “Outdoor play is an enjoyable activity for children, which simultaneously helps their physical and mental development. Unfortunately, based on a recent study, many mothers prevent their children from playing outdoors because they are worried about their children’s health and safety. Safeguard encourages children to engage in outdoor play, as long as precautions, such as proper handwashing with soap, are observed.”
Handventure Land is part of the celebration of Global Handwashing Day (GHD) on October 15.  Safeguard led the first Philippine celebration of this international day for promoting handwashing in 2008, and turned it into an annual event in line with its commitment to health and hygiene education among Filipino families.
In line with its GHD celebration, Safeguard introduces the new Safeguard Magic Foamer, designed to make handwashing a fun and memorable experience for children.  It is a device that turns Safeguard liquid soap into a form not unlike shaving cream and hair mousse.  “With the Magic Foamer, moms won’t need to beg and plead with their children to wash their hands. The soap itself becomes a source of wonder, making handwashing enjoyable for kids,” shares Maro.
Seventy-five percent of Filipino children play on the streets, and outdoors even while in school, making the spread of germs a real danger.  A high level of child-to-child interaction leads to greater and faster transfer of germs. According to a breakthrough Germ Transfer Study by Safeguard, “one child can contaminate more than 50% of his class in less than an hour of outdoor activities. When children go out, there is as much as 50% chance of them being contaminated in school.”

The simple act of handwashing with soap is proven to be an effective and affordable way to prevent potentially deadly diseases among children. Safeguard breaks the germ transfer chain, allowing children to have fun during playtime while staying protected from disease-causing germs.

Safeguard invites everyone to join its 6th GHD celebration in Handventure Land in Eastwood. Tell your family and friends about Safeguard Handventure Land and invite them to experience the activities for themselves. It is open from October 11 – 13, 11AM to 9PM. And, most importantly, don’t forget to wash your hands with soap!

Athletes on Their Mark for the Safeguard Active 5i50 Triathlon

The Safeguard Active 5i50 Triathlon was officially launched last Monday in a press conference at the Hotel Dusit Thani, Makati City by Sunrise Event Inc. CEO and President Wilfred Uytengsu.

Safeguard will gather local and international pros as well as age-groupers for the first ever Safeguard Active 5i50 Triathlon this  October 16.
Athletes know the importance of maintaining a proper regimen to enhance performance. They rely on state-of-the-art gear that delivers speed, proper nutrition that guarantees endurance, and a training program that increases their strength. But when it comes to hygiene, one important aspect is often overlooked: the skin, which is actually our first line of defense when it comes to germs.

There’s no body part quite as tortured as the human skin. Every day, it has to endure all the visible and microscopic dirt and grime from all the different elements around us. But it’s the triathletes who put their skins through the most abuse: as they splash, pedal, and stride, they expose their skins to a harsh mix of sun, chlorine or salt water, and dirt. These, along with excessive sweat and friction from gear, can take its toll on the skin – and it can lead to skin diseases and illness.

Safeguard Active 5i50 Triathlon – a world-class and intimate race that will surely put those skins to the test. The course takes place in Subic, which promises a challenging yet controlled environment for both experts and beginners. The event will be composed of a 1.5KM swim at Kamana Resort [Swim Venue], a 40KM bike course along the rolling hills of Subic [Bike Venue], and will culminate with a 10KM run at a new route along the shady forest [Run Venue]. The entire course is set against the backdrop of Subic Bay’s breathtaking scenery, which promises a unique race for participants and an exclusive enjoyable experience for their families who will come to support.

In partnership with Sunrise Events, Inc., the agency behind the highly successful Ironman 70.3 and Iron Kids, this leg is part of the 5150 triathlon series, the world’s largest international Olympic race series in the world. It is also the first non-drafting international race series of its kind, offering a competitive platform for professional and age group athletes.

Safeguard keeps up with those who love the game by leveling up to their demands. The brand has been keeping family skin healthy for more than 75 years, using a mix of unbeatable germ protection and fresh, cleansing elements to care for Filipino skin. It has been every household’s partner for preventing disease and pursuing an active, worry-free life. For the 5150 race, Safeguard aims to showcase its new line Safeguard Active, a product specifically targeted for athletes’ extreme needs.

Safeguard Active boasts of a higher level of anti-bacterial ingredient, which inhibits the growth and re-growth of odor-causing germs for hours. It comes in both soap and body wash form, and its fresh scent can last all day and withstand both sweat and water. It’s the perfect protection booster for the body’s first line of defense.

For battle-tested athletes who aim to beat their personal records, the Safeguard Active 5150 Triathlon is a perfect chance to bring the 2013 race season to an iconic finish. Meanwhile, neophyte racers will be thrilled to participate in their first Olympic-level distance triathlon event.

It’s a day that promises exhilarating challenges for the adrenaline-hungry, coupled with unbeatable Safeguard protection to ensure a fresh, unhampered finish. No matter what kind of athlete you are, it’s time to get your skin in the game.

Give Me Five ! Global Handwashing Day 2012: Safeguard promotes handwashing after playtime

Give Me Five! On the 5th year of Global Handwashing Day,
Safeguard encourages handwashing with soap after playtime
through donation of 1st sustainable playground with handwashing station.
This October 15 will mark the 5th year of celebrating Global Handwashing Day in the Philippines. This day will stress the importance of handwashing with soap through a simple message: Clean hands save lives. The simple yet lifesaving act of handwashing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhea among children under five by more than 40 percent, and respiratory infections by nearly 25 percent. In the Philippines, pneumonia and diarrhea are the 3rd and 4th leading cause of deaths among children under five respectively.

Global Handwashing Day also aims to educate the public that there are 5 critical times for handwashing:
1.  before eating
2.  before handling food
3.  after using the toilet
4.  after handling your pets
5.  after playtime

These are key moments when there is a high risk of transmitting germs from the hands to the mouth. As such, instilling the habit of handwashing with soap during these critical times among young children is an important intervention to help reduce child morbidity and mortality.

In line with its mission to promote proper hygiene and health education among Filipino families, Safeguard first celebrated Global Handwashing Day in 2008. Five years later, Safeguard continues to lead the celebration of Global Handwashing Day in the Philippines by making it even bigger and better.

On this 5th birthday of Global Handwashing Day, Safeguard promotes handwashing with soap after playtime, one of the five critical times, by donating five playgrounds with handwashing stations. At a media event held in Sitio Una, Taguig, Safeguard proudly unveiled its birthday gift to the community - the first playground.
“Outdoor play is an enjoyable activity for children but it is also important in their development,” Mr. Chad Sotelo, Country Marketing Manager for Safeguard said.

However, based on a recent study, many mothers prevent their children from playing outdoors because they are worried about their children’s safety. Furthermore, 75 percent of children play on the streets while only 3 percent play on a public playground.

“Through the donation of these playgrounds, Safeguard wants to enable children to play in an environment safe from harm and disease-causing germs,” says Mr. Sotelo. In order to ensure that the playgrounds are sustainable and safe, Safeguard partnered with play experts Play Pilipinas.
“We at Play Pilipinas believe that every child should be given the chance to play, and to play in a safe and sound environment. Our advocacy is to provide low-cost, sustainable, and child-safe playgrounds for Filipino children. We are happy to have a partner in Safeguard that ensures kids will also have immediate access to soap and water after playing,” says Ms. Sigrid Perez, co-founder of Play Pilipinas.

Mr. Paul Perez, who co-founded Play Pilipinas with Sigrid, explains that the design of the playground differs per site, reflecting the character of the city. “For Taguig, we tried to mirror the emerging high-rises and so the playground has high and low spaces as well,” added Mr. Perez.

This new playground at Sitio Una, and 4 others to come, will represent not only the past 5 years of Global Handwashing Day, but also Safeguard’s continued commitment to promote proper hygiene and health education for many more years to come.

“Handwashing education is and will continue to be the primary advocacy of Safeguard – not just on October 15, but every single day,” says Mr. Sotelo. Together with partners UNICEF and Fit for School, Procter & Gamble, through Safeguard, has reached over a million children in ten provinces in the country, teaching them the lifesaving habit of handwashing with soap.

Safeguard invites everyone to join our 5th year of Global Handwashing Day in the Philippines. Join the celebration by tweeting with the hashtag #Happy5thGHD. Watch out for more activities from Safeguard in the coming weeks. But, most importantly, don’t forget to wash your hands with Safeguard especially during the five critical moments!
