Floyd Mayweather makes a personal phone call to Manny Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather made a personal call to Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines Wednesday night and discuss a possible megafight next May.

Mayweather adviser Leonard Ellerbe confirmed the call to ESPN while Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum did the same to BoxingScene.com and Pacquiao himself talked with ABS-CBN network about the short conversation.

Reports said that the two men have agreed on one thing if they were to ever meet in the most anticipated fight of this generation – that the purse would be split 50-50.

Arum said a more ideal date is May 26 or June 9. He referred to the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout as the “Super Bowl” of boxing and therefore, should be treated as such.

“Our idea in doing this Mayweather-Pacquaio fight is that it’s the Super Bowl of boxing , it’s a memorable event, not just another fight,” Arum said.

Pacquiao, 54-3 with two draws and 32 knockouts, has won his past 15 fights over a span of nearly seven years while Mayweather, 42-0 with 26 knockouts, must serve a 90-day jail sentence starting June 1 after a domestic violence conviction.

Mayweather has spoken with Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz several times in recent weeks, according to all reports.

In case a deal with Mayweather doesn’t go through again (the two sides have failed to negotiate twice before), Arum has already a chosen another fighter for Pacquiao.

Arum did not disclose the name of that fighter to the Times and to Sports Illustrated, but said that he will be among these four: World Boxing Council light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, or a rematch against super-welterweight champion Miguel Cotto; or a fourth fight with Mexican Juan Miguel Marquez.
