‘FLUID ’ – A Reinterpretation of the Palanca Award-winning play set to open on July 24

The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Technical Theater Program Batch 111 proudly presents a reinterpretation of the Palanca Award-winning play, “FLUID”.

Written and directed by Floy Quintos, the comedy is about young Filipino contemporary artists struggling to make a name for themselves as they negotiate the tricky terrain between Love, Art and Compromise.

“ FLUID ” is set to open on July 24 and shall continue to run on July 25 and 26 (1:00 pm and 7:00 pm) at the 5/F SDA Theater, School of Design and Arts Campus, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 950 P. Ocampo St., Malate, Manila. A press preview is set on July 23 at 7 p.m.

“FLUID” is written as a series of scenes in different locations featuring three pairs of characters who seemingly have nothing to do with each other. Amir is a struggling and frustrated young painter whose life is about to be changed by Mira a wealthy art collector who dreams of discovering new talent. Jom and Alben are passionate theater actors torn between their passion for their craft and the lure of fame. Renata is a seemingly batty orchestra coordinator out to defend the dignity of her orchestra when it is hired to play at a society wedding by the overbearing events coordinator, Simone. All these unique and clashing characters come together unexpectedly at an art exhibit where their impulses lead to joyful mayhem.

The cast of “FLUID” is made up of professional actors. Red Turnip Theater’s Ana Abad Santos who originally created the role of Mira in 2004 reprises her role. Kalil Almonte last seen in “Sintang Dalisay” and “Games People Play” plays Amir. JC Santos, fresh from his tint in Hong Kong’s Disney Land and Singapore’s Universal Studio, plays the ambitious Jom while Russell Legaspi last seen in this year’s Labfest plays the earnest Alben. Amihan Tanedo Ruiz and Gel Basa both last seen in “Breakaway Antigone” play Renata and Simone respectively. Musical Theater actor Tony Falcon also appears in the show.

“FLUID” had its successful runs in the University of the Philippines, Diliman (2004) and in Ateneo de Manila University (2007). For this new production, “FLUID” is being restaged by the Benilde Technical Theater Batch 111.

The artistic and creative team of “FLUID” is led by Floy Quintos (Playwright and Director), Ellawyn Cruz ( Set Designer ) and the students of DLS-CSB Major in Technical Theater Batch 111.

Dubai is building 'Mall of the World'

Dubai, the glitzy emirate known for its love of grandiose projects said it is now planning to build the biggest mall on the planet, the Mall of the World!

The world's first temperature-controlled city, Mall of the World, located along Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, occupying 48 million square feet, complete with theme park, theatres, five miles of covered streets and 100 hotels. It will also contain health resorts, a Celebration Steet modelled on the Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona and 'retail streets network' that will stretch over four-and-a-half miles. In fact, the ambitious emirate has dubbed the project a 'temperature-controlled pedestrian city'.

The shopping mall itself will occupy eight million square feet, housed below a glass dome, with other attractions extending beyond the central shopping area. The grand project is part of Dubai's bid to become a year-round tourism destination, despite soaring temperatures in summer that can reach nearly 50C.

The new mall, which will be a city-within-a-city, will be the emirate's chance to attract visitors even in the height of the summer, by providing a completely climate-controlled experience. The plan is to create a cultural area, with theatres hosting shows at West End and Broadway levels, as well as a network of streets that will be entirely climate controlled. The eight million square foot shopping centre will be housed under a dome, while the streets will also be covered so that tourists can shop without getting too hot in the relentless heat of the summer months.

In the cooler winter months, the dome will open, allowing people to shop in the fresh air, closing as the summer heats up.

It will also be a short drive to the world's tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,717ft.

Sheikh Mohammad stated: 'Our ambitions are higher than having seasonal tourism - tourism is key driver of our economy and we aim to make the UAE an attractive destination all-year long."

'This is why we will start working on providing pleasant temperature-controlled environments during the summer months.'

Dubai Holding, the developer owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum said that the project "will comprise the largest indoor theme park in the world" under a glass dome that would be opened during winter.

The seven-kilometre (4.35 mile)-long promenades connecting the facilities would also be covered and air-conditioned during summer, it added.

Dubai hopes the "Mall of the World" can attract more than 180 million visitors each year.

United Arab Emirates is known for its numerous malls and many hotels, including the Dubai Mall, touted as the world's largest shopping, leisure and entertainment destination. It is also home to the world's tallest tower, Burj Khalifa.

Dubai has established itself as a global hub for air transport and transit trade, as well as a regional financial centre.

And it beat off opposition from Brazil, Russia and Turkey in November to win the right to host the World Expo trade fair in 2020.

The emirate's economy was hit in 2009 by the global financial crisis, but it has since made a strong comeback, thanks to growth in the trade, transport and tourism sectors.

The Philippines' SM Mall of Asia has 407,000 square meters of total floor area, while SM MegaMall has over 500,000 square meters of total floor area.

SM Prime, the country's largest mall operator, expects to have a network of 50 malls in the Philippines with a gross floor area of 6.6 million square meters by the end of 2014.

Boyz II Men serenades Manila in September

Boyz II Men—the ones behind soulful tracks such as “I’ll Make Love to You”, “End of the Road”, “On Bended Knee”, “Water Runs Dry”, “A Song For Mama”, “One Sweet Day” (with Mariah Carey), and “4 Seasons of Loneliness” among other hits, wil serenade the Filipinos who possess an unwavering love for romantic ballads. With the Boyz II Men sereneding in Manila this coming September, Filipinos will more than satisfy this craving.

Ovation Productions, the premier concert promotions and productions company in the country, presents Boyz II Men LIVE in Manila this September 17, 2014 to be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The brilliant and immensely talented group is currently composed of baritone Nathan Morris with tenors Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris. In 2003, past member Michael McCary left the group because of health predicaments. The insistent popular demand in the Philippines for Boyz II Men magnetized the American R&B vocal group to once again grace the archipelago for the fourth time this coming September.

The group is widely popular for touching the hearts of many through their powerful voices, heartwarming lyrics, and splendid harmonies. The group has also done recordings of Motown’s Greatest Hits, a CD of the greatest love ballads, and other covers of popular hits.’

Boyz II Men’s vast success soared to great heights in the 1990s after releasing “End of the Road” which reached the top of the charts and conquered the number one place of Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks. This caused one of the best vocal groups to break Elvis Presley’s record of longevity in the charts. Boyz II Men wowed the world once more by breaking their own record with the songs “I’ll Make Love to You” and “One Sweet Day” (with Mariah Carey), at fourteen and sixteen weeks respectively. The latter track still holds the all-time record for longevity in the Billboard Hot 100.

As one of the most massive names in R&B and a capella, Boyz II Men endeavored to put R&B back into the mainstream as it had been in the 1970s. The group has indubitably put a resonating impact on music and certainly brought back R&B to the popular scene. Boyz II Men garnered an astonishing cumulative 50 weeks on the number one spot of the Billboard Hot 100, a feat that only Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Mariah Carey have surpassed. This proves how impactful Boyz II Men’s music has become and how the power of their voices has shaped and defined a capella and R&B music.

Catch Boyz II Men live in Manila on September 17, 2014 8PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
