As a testament to their commitment to shaping the country’s next-gen heroes, Samsung Electronics Philippines brought back Solve for Tomorrow for another innovation-packed season with the support of the Department of Education (DepEd) and Philippine Science High School System (PSHS), with public science high school students in grades 8 to 10 showcasing their ideas to solve local challenges.

The teams who will move forward with the final presentation are: VersaSprout from the Regional Science High School in La Union, CocoSorb from Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Region Campus, sUN-Block from Philippine Science High School-Central Luzon Campus, PAROLA from Biñan City Science and Technology High School, Development of a Bamboo and Coconut Coir-Based Oil and Microplastics Filtration System for River Water Quality Improvement from Philippine Science High School-Ilocos Region Campus, BEYONSEE from Makati West High School (Makati Science High School), Hi-LoWall from Lipa City Science Integrated National High School, SIMS from Calamba City Science Integrated School, Croprotech from Philippine Science High School-Main Campus, and ReLeaf from Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science.

This year, Samsung Electronics Philippines received almost 300 submissions and approximately over 1,000 students participating across the country. The teams, comprising a maximum of 4 members each, were asked to identify a local community or environmental sustainability problem they want to solve with technology or AI and come up with a design proposal to be screened by the Solve for Tomorrow panel of judges.

To evaluate the entries, Samsung Electronics Philippines tapped industry experts to provide their knowledge and expertise. This year’s esteemed judging panel is comprised of Monchito Ibrahim, Vice President of the Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Association of the Philippines and an Executive Member of the National Innovation Council; Alwyn Rosel, Deputy Director of Ideaspace Ventures and QBO Innovation Hub and Rachelle Perez, Campus Program Lead of DEVCON Philippines along with Samsung Electronics Philippines representatives.

The 10 finalists will now undergo an idea mentorship with Samsung experts where they will communicate with their designated coach for the proposal improvement, proof-of-concept, or mock-up creation in preparation for their final presentation. They will move forward to the final round of judging this December for a chance to win PHP 2 million worth of cash prizes and Samsung devices for their school, teams, and teacher adviser.

Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow 2023 Grand Finalists Reimagine the Future

In 2023, among over 200 entries in Samsung’s first-ever Solve for Tomorrow in the Philippines, three innovative solutions stood out. Last year’s Grand Prize winner hailing from Philippine Science High School-Cagayan Valley Campus is Team Intellimeter whose design solution aims to improve energy efficiency. Bansud NHS-Regional Science High School’s Project O.A.S.I.S. bagged the second prize with their filtration system to remove oil and microplastics from the ocean. Finally, the third-prize winners, also from Philippine Science High School-Cagayan Valley Campus, Team TomPost focused on the serious problem of waste in the agricultural sector, helping them to manage waste by repurposing tomatoes and other agricultural waste into compost and other products.

With the second run of Solve for Tomorrow, Samsung Electronics Philippines aims to empower even more STEM students across the country. They hope to encourage students to utilize technology by going beyond the classroom to challenge themselves to innovate and create solutions for the community, true to Samsung’s core philosophy.

The competition offers a unique learning experience, enabling participants to leverage their STEM expertise and acquire valuable skills throughout the entire journey. As of 2020, the CSR program has benefited over 2 million people and expanded to over 50 markets, including the Philippines in 2023.

STEM in the Philippines

In the 2022 edition of the Global Innovation Index, which measures economic progress and competitiveness, the Philippines slipped eight spots to rank 59th in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scales in reading, math, and science.

In the first participation of the Philippines in the PISA in 2018, Filipino students ranked the lowest in reading comprehension among 79 countries and second lowest in both mathematical and scientific literacy.

Mr. Minsu Chu, president of Samsung Philippines, stated that the company is committed to giving back to the community through STEM education. “Every young person deserves to unlock his or her full potential, regardless of circumstances. Samsung believes in developing young minds and equipping them with resources and opportunities that nurture their dreams, so they can generate positivity that also inspires fellow young people,” said Mr. Chu.

How to join

Targeted towards the youth who are taking on the STEM track from Grades 8-12, the Solve for Tomorrow program aims to enhance the students’ technical and 4C skills (cooperation, communication, creativity and critical thinking).

Interested applicants, which should consist of students and a teacher, can submit an application through the official Samsung website. Entries are welcome from individuals or teams with a maximum of eight (8) members. Schools may enter as many individuals or teams.

Solve for Tomorrow will run in three stages from May to December. Qualified entries will go through a preliminary round in June. Shortlisted teams will move to the semi-final round that will last until October where they will be subjected to workshops and mentorship in order for the teams to build a prototype of their solution. Only five (5) teams will advance to the final round. During the final round in December, the students will present their prototypes to a panel of judges and three (3) individuals or teams will be announced as winners.

Prizes worth over P1.5 million await the winners including their respective teachers and schools. Stay tuned for further contest updates to be announced soon.

Samsung Ph launch QLED TV, Korean's Kim Soo Hyun is the special guest

Samsung Philippines marks the next innovation in television with the QLED TV

“The Next Frontier,” - Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation declared a new era of television viewing as they officially launched the QLED TV in the country.

Hosted by TV personality and radio jock Sam Oh, the launch of QLED TV held at Okada Manila, on May 26, 2017, the event brought together Samsung executives, led by President Kevin Lee, media, and valued dealer-partners as they witnessed how the QLED TV delivers a next generation display that overcomes the disadvantages of other competing technologies.

Highlighting this groundbreaking technology, the tech giant brought in Korean celebrity Kim Soo Hyun as a special guest to support the local launch of the QLED TV.

The actor expressed his excitement as he revealed the product that aims to give consumers a viewing experience like no other.

Kim Soo Hyun is best known for korean tv drama roles in Dream High, My Love From The Star,  Most Embrasing The Sun and The Producers.

Watching TV has changed through the years and is now more central in the lives of consumers. From being a mere source of entertainment, TVs are now considered as windows that let users experience the world right from their homes.

With its exclusive Quantum Dot technology, the Samsung QLED TV turns light into perfect color, making a powerful combination that revolutionizes picture quality. The new television line also offers HDR 1500 brightness and 100% color volume expression, enabling viewers to watch scenes just as how the creator intended them to be. It can also reproduce almost any color known to man, making HDR content more vibrant and natural-looking.

Beauty and functionality work hand-in-hand in the Samsung QLED TV. Its revolutionary design uses an Invisible Connection cable for other TV connected devices, removing the pain point of dealing with unsightly and tangled cables, and making it a great addition to any room. To further add to the clean design, users have the option to avail of the no-gap wall mount, which allows the TV to sit flush against the wall. Also available are an array of stands, such as gravity and studio stands, that can blend in with any living space.

A smart TV needs an equally smart remote, and with the QLED TV’s One Remote Control that covers all connected devices, users will have an easier time navigating whether they want to play games, watch sports, or stream their favorite TV shows. Users can also turn their mobile phones into a personal remote through the Smart View app. More entertainment options are provided by the Samsung QLED TV as it comes equipped with apps, services, and other content through the Smart Hub.

To bring to life the qualities of the product that define the future of TV—superior picture quality, freedom in design, and smart interactivity—artists performed a dramatic and breathtaking dance supported by an integrated play of visuals. Experience zones were also set up during the event, allowing curious guests to get a first-hand viewing experience of the QLED TV.

“Each year we challenge ourselves into coming up with upgrades and innovations, but this year’s QLED TV really is the pinnacle of high-quality viewing,” shared Samsung Product Marketing Head for AV Jun Guevara.
“From pure lifelike colors, to the easy-to-use One Remote Control, to attention to design inside and out—the QLED TV ends the debate and is undoubtedly the next innovation in TV.”
Samsung also welcomed two local ambassadors for the QLED TV campaign—award-winning filmmaker Paul Soriano and tastemaker Tessa Prieto-Valdes—creative industry movers and shakers whose unapologetic taste, individual style, and uncompromising standards match that of Samsung’s new line.

“We’re happy to formally introduce Paul and Tessa as our local ambassadors, who are industry leaders in their own realm. We believe that they are instrumental in showcasing the benefits of the QLED TV through their different fields and passion points," said Samsung Marketing Director Chad Sotelo.

The new line-up of the QLED TV is available in authorized Samsung dealers nationwide. For more details, visit the Samsung Facebook page or log on to samsung.com/ph

Samsung celebrates Filipino culture and heritage through 'The Plazas of Manila' exhibit and mobile app 'Culture Explorer'

Samsung Corporate Citizenship celebrates the richness of Filipino culture and heritage by using innovative technology to cast the spotlight on historical sites and landmarks.

Once the center of Filipino life, plazas in Manila are either disappearing or falling into a state of disrepair. Few people recognize the historical and cultural significance of these landmarks, and they are often overlooked by heritage conservationists, as well as students of history.

Samsung and the Philippine Science High School Foundation, Inc., to help Filipinos rediscover Philippine’s heritage and culture, teamed up to hold an exhibit entitled The Plazas of Manila at the Yuchengco Museum with noted architect, designer, and urban planner Paulo Alcazaren as the curator. Open from August 27 until September 18, the exhibit highlights the historical and cultural significance of plazas in Manila, with the use of augmented reality on Samsung’s latest digital tablet and Smart TV technology.

Coinciding with the exhibit is the launch of Culture Explorer, a mobile application that uses augmented reality technology to help people, especially the youth, learn about Manila’s plazas and other cultural and heritage landmarks. The app is virtually a tour guide in one’s pocket, with fresh content and plenty of interesting trivia. It also allows users to navigate around key landmarks and travel back in time to see how the landmark has looked and evolved over the years. Since history is better appreciated with other people, the Culture Explorer app allows users to connect with other Culture Explorers who share their interest in the different sites.

“Through this exhibit, we are able to cast the spotlight on one of the most important elements of Filipino culture and history, the plaza. This exhibit allows us to bridge technology and art together, giving the Filipino youth a chance to learn about their roots,” said Linda Cordova, Executive Director of the Philippine Science High School Foundation, Inc.

Alcazaren, a founding member of the Heritage Conservation Society, believes that the marriage of technology and art will not only benefit artists, but also students of culture and history.

“Technology makes the arts, culture and history more accessible and more appealing to people. It allows them to appreciate everything in a more dynamic manner, injecting a new dimension and giving it a meaning beyond what they get to read in books,’’ said Alcazaren.

The digital exhibit and app launch is an undertaking of Samsung’s Corporate Citizenship Program which is committed to the conservation of Filipino culture and history.

“Philippine history is very rich and it has to be kept alive in the minds and hearts of people. Samsung believes that technology is the perfect medium to link the past with the present, to generate greater appreciation of our rich heritage. Culture Explorer enables users to appreciate the Philippines’ rich history in these everyday landmarks, which can be easily overlooked. It helps to pique interest among the young generation with the use of augmented reality technology,” said Arlita Tayko-Narag, Head of Samsung Public Affairs.

Culture Explorer is compatible with all Android smartphones and tablets, and can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store* and Galaxy Apps. No registration is required for users to enjoy full access to the app.

“We hope that the public will find the time to visit the exhibit and download the Culture Explorer app. It is a great and fun way to learn about history and culture, and will definitely help everyone—students, teachers, and plain curious folk—to appreciate the richness of Filipino heritage,” concluded Cris Concepcion, Director of Content and Services at Samsung Electronics Philippines.
