PayMaya pays it forward to mental health frontliners

PayMaya pays it forward to the National Center for Mental Health by giving out 100 Christmas food baskets to NCMH Crisis Hotline responders and ER and Psychiatric Acute Unit staff.

Digital financial services leader PayMaya recently paid it forward to the frontlines of the National Center for Mental Health. The company distributed 100 Christmas food baskets to the NCMH Crisis Hotline responders and the Emergency Room and Psychiatric Acute Unit staff.

"Promoting mental health is important, especially among our young people during this pandemic. We are paying it forward to our mental health frontliners who have been helping fight this silent battle. We admire them for bravely dedicating their time and effort to help those suffering from mental health issues," said Nick Wilwayco, Head of Public Affairs and Communications at PayMaya.

According to NCMH, the average volume of monthly calls they received during the pandemic nearly quadrupled versus pre-pandemic numbers. PayMaya's gift to NCMH is part of PayMaya's initiative under the MVP Group's Tuloy Pa Rin Ang Pasko campaign, which aims to keep the Christmas spirit alive amid the pandemic.

Early this year, NCMH was also a beneficiary of the PayMaya It Forward Flash Donation Drive for COVID-19 frontliners.

Defensil's Donation Drive to Vaccine Sites Helps Filipinos to Live Safe Now

In line with their commitment to help Filipinos live safe now, Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol donated reusable personal protective equipment
(PPE) and Defensil 70% Isopropyl Alcohol to several vaccination sites in Muntinlupa, San Juan and Pasig.

As more and more Filipinos get their vaccines, Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol is here to help ensure that frontliners and priority groups remain protected through proper sanitation.

Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol donated 600 PPE’s and 264 1-liter bottles of isopropyl alcohol to vaccination sites such as the Pasig Sports Center, Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan as well as at the Festival Mall and Ayala South Park in Muntinlupa, creating a safer environment as more and more Filipinos get their jabs.

“We are committed to supporting the government’s vaccination efforts to help more Filipinos to live safer. We hope that the PPEs and isopropyl alcohol we donated to the different vaccine sites can give fellow Filipinos a higher level of protection as they get vaccinated and will serve as a reminder of the importance of always disinfecting when they go out and start to go back to their regular activities,” said Nikko Cruz, Brand Manager of Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol.

With Filipinos returning to the workplace and slowly resuming outdoor activities like shopping, dining, and working out, regular disinfection of hands and high touch surfaces using rubbing alcohol remains a key solution to help prevent the spread of germs. Recommended by the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Defensil’s 70% Solution Isopropyl Alcohol allows Filipinos to live safe now as it kills 99.9% of germs. It also helps Filipinos to quickly and effectively sanitize as it starts to kill germs on contact and provides up to 12 hours of protection upon constant use.

On top of this, Defensil is hypo-allergenic and contains moisturizer, so Filipinos can sanitize as often as they need to, as they go back to their regular activities.

With vaccination sites given a higher level of protection, Filipinos can live safe now and have greater peace of mind as they get vaccinated.

For more information on how to live safe now, visit the Defensil Isopropyl Alcohol’s Facebook page at  https://www.facebook.com/defensil.philippines

*Defensil 70% Isopropyl Alcohol was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli or E. coli and Candida albicans

J&T Heroes awards outstanding delivery frontliners

Bayani sa Makabagong Panahon campaign honors contributions of riders

J&T Express Philippines honors Edison Awa as J&T Hero of the Year

Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes, they wear helmets and ride motorcycles.

From hundreds of nominations for outstanding delivery riders nationwide, e-commerce logistics leader J&T Express Philippines recently awarded its top three “hero riders” last July 2 during the Facebook and Youtube livestream of J&T Heroes: Bayani sa Makabagong Panahon which was watched by more than 190,000 viewers.

J&T Express Philippines Vice President Zoe Chi said the event is part of the company’s bayanihan spirit that aims to uplift the dignity of delivery riders as frontliners and modern heroes by recognizing their hard work, dedication, and contributions on the field every day.

“They have shown valor, creativity, ingenuity, and resilience in every parcel delivered. We are honored to have them in our J&T family. May you continue to serve as inspirations to every person you meet on the road,” she said.

Edison Awa, a J&T delivery rider based in Muntinlupa for two years now, garnered the top spot out of the final seven nominees and was named J&T Hero of the Year. According to his branch supervisor, Awa could deliver 100-300 packages in a day, or five or sometimes six days a week, making him one of the top couriers in his branch.

“Lahat naman kami deserve na maging J&T Hero,” he said. “Napakahalaga po ng delivery riders kasi kami ang nagdadala ng pangunahing pangangailan ng mga tao sa panahon na takot pa silang lumabas. Kahit natatakot para sa sarili, tinataas ko na lang sa Diyos ang aking kaligtasan para hindi bumigay sa hamon ng buhay."

As a breadwinner for his aging parents and siblings in the province as well as his own family of four, Awa used to rely on uncertain odd jobs in construction and agencies, but now finds fulfillment and steady income from being a J&T delivery frontliner. “Malaki ang pasasalamat ko sa J&T,” he added, “Ang mensahe ko sa aking co-riders, kahit gaano kahirap ang trabaho sa araw-araw, kahit gaano karami, isipin na ginagawa natin ito para sa ating mahal sa buhay.” As J&T Hero of the Year, Awa received a brand-new motorcycle and smart phone.

J&T Heroes recognize Daryl Ocenar from Tacloban City and Ricky Frias of J&T Taguig Branch as J&T Heroes second and third placer respectively.

Daryl Ocenar from Tacloban and Ricky Frias representing the J&T Taguig Branch won second and third place respectively. They also received smartphones and corresponding prizes to include wireless earphones, Php5,000 worth of gift certificates, and an action camera. Other J&T Heroes finalists which include Raniel Pawilan (Quezon City), Russel Agullo (Makati City), Alan Guillen (Cebu City), and Jecel Beniga (Davao City) also took home gift certificates and special items from J&T.
Vice President of J&T Express Philippines Zoe Chi congratulates and thanks everyone who participated in the first J&T Heroes: Bayani sa Makabagong Panahon.

J&T’s celebrity campaign ambassador Xian Lim captivates the audience as host of the first J&T Heroes: Bayani sa Makabagong Panahon with singer Gigi de Lana and the GG Vibes Band.

Aside from the awarding ceremony, the livestream engaged viewers with games facilitated by J&T’s official celebrity host Xian Lim while the performance of singer and former Tawag ng Tanghalan contestant Gigi de Lana with the GG Vibes Band was equally anticipated by fans. Local leaders also sent their special messages of support including Davao Mayor Sara Duterte, Cebu Mayor Edgardo Labella; Jaen, Nueva Ecija Mayor Sylvia Austria, and Cabanatuan Mayor Myca Vergara.

The event is supported by J&T’s brand partners HINO, FOTON Motors Philippines, Mobile Legends Bang Bang, Realme, Prestone Philippines, Clorox Philippines, Gcash, Shopee, and Pocari Sweat. Secondary local business sponsors include BELO Essentials, Gfoxx International, ELITE Sales, Tink Custom Print, Seek Shine, Organic Skin, K-COOL, Leupp Watches, KUMU, and Jane Secret.

J&T’s bayanihan spirit empowers and prioritizes customers and employees. Early this year, the company released a second tranche of groceries and essentials as employee “ayuda” to help team members affected by the lockdown. J&T has also extended help through various logistics services for COVID response and immediate disaster relief. The company is also dedicated to helping local online businesses grow by providing quality delivery services.

Jollibee Group Foundation, Temasek Foundation team up to feed communities, frontliners affected by COVID-19

Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) has partnered with Singapore-based Temasek Foundation to augment the Jollibee Group FoodAID Program, which seeks to help feed healthcare workers and families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jollibee Group Foundation and Singapore-based Temasek Foundation partner donated 105, 650 meals across five Philippine regions.

Temasek Foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organization that supports programs that uplift lives and communities in Singapore and beyond. The Foundation aims to strengthen social resilience, foster international exchange and regional capabilities, advance science, and protect the planet.

Through the support provided by Temasek Foundation, JGF and its partners were able to distribute 105,650 meals across Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal from September to December 2020. Of these, 99,400 meals were served to communities, while the remaining 6,250 meals were served to healthcare workers from 20 public hospitals.

The FoodAID Program was implemented through three initiatives, all of which were supported by the Temasek Foundation.

First is the distribution of ready-to-cook food packs that were directly delivered to communities through JGF’s local partner organizations. JGF leveraged on Jollibee Group’s expertise in meal preparation and product development of specially designed food packs—Chicken Guisado and Beef Meatballs—that allow more people to be provided with nutritious, delicious meals at a lower cost.

Second is Project Karinderya—a program that helps feed families while facilitating livelihood development of karinderya (local food stores) operators. Through the support from Temasek Foundation, JGF partnered with Kasagana-Ka Development Center (KDCI) and Kabuhayan sa Ganap na Kasarinlan Credit and Savings Cooperative (K-Coop) to re-establish 30 karinderyas that served 200 families with daily meals for 30 days. JGF also provided training for karinderya owners and health cadets on food preparation, food safety, and customer service to further build their capacities and help them become self-sufficient even after the project duration.

A health cadet trained through Project Karinderya helps ensure that karinderya operators observe standards on food preparation, food safety, and customer service in Quezon City. Project Karinderya is a two-in-one program that helps both karinderya owners whose operations were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and families in urban poor communities through meal subsidies.

Third is the distribution of ready-to-eat meals to healthcare workers who are working at hospitals in Metro Manila with the highest incidences of COVID-19.

The Jollibee Group FoodAID Program distributed meals to healthcare workers on the frontlines of the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

“COVID-19 is a global long-term public health crisis, undermining not just our physical and mental health but also our economy and livelihoods. Viruses do not respect borders and it is only when we band together as one will we be able to defeat this global enemy. We are happy to work with Jollibee Group Foundation in the Philippines to provide more than 105,000 meals and other support where they are most needed. The smiles and resolve of the beneficiaries to soldier on and pull through together is an indication that we are on the right track,” said Mr. Benedict Cheong, Chief Executive of Temasek Foundation International.

“There exists a need for sustained collaborative efforts that can effectively promote access to food among communities by the pandemic and recent disasters. We thank the Temasek Foundation for their trust in the Jollibee Group and their belief in the objectives of the FoodAID Program. Truly, crises such as this pandemic have the power to band like-minded people and groups together,” said Jollibee Group Foundation Executive Director Gisela Tiongson.

Together with partners and donors, Jollibee Group FoodAID Program has mobilized Php300 million (USD 6.2 million)-worth of food assistance or 4.7 million meals for families and frontliners from March to December 2020.

As the social development arm of Jollibee Group, JGF implements programs on agriculture, education, and disaster response with partner communities nationwide.

Made possible through philanthropic endowments gifted by Singapore’s Temasek, Temasek Foundation’s programs strive towards achieving positive outcomes for individuals and communities now, and for generations to come.

Finance for all: GCash helps trike drivers and vendors to cope up with the pandemic

Tricycle drivers and market vendors in Pasig City who have been searching for a safe and secure way to sustain their businesses while following safety protocols have found a reliable way to receive payments from their customers – GCash QR.

A safe and effective alternative to send/receive money without having to share one’s mobile number, GCash QR is a solution introduced by GCash as part of its partnership with AMTODA (Antipolo Market Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association) and ASCLP TODA, and with vendors at the Pasig City Mega Market.

“At the heart of this program is financial inclusion. We envision to enable micro and small businesses with the digital finance platform so they can enjoy its benefits at a time when they need it most. Many of them are frontliners too. We should also focus on helping them by providing them with tools so they can continue growing their businesses and serving their customers during the pandemic,” says Martha Sazon, President and CEO of GCash.

According to Restituto Bayote, President of AMTODA, which has over 500 members, they have been encouraging members to use QR on Demand as a contactless way to safely and securely receive payment from their passengers. They have been working closely with GCash to orient drivers, especially the elderly ones, of its beneficial features.

To this, Antipolo TODA driver Zalde Guiruela agrees. “Mas magandang paggamit ng GCash kasi kailangan nating umiwas sa pagkahawaan ngayong pandemya.Kaya mas komportable gumamit ng GCash para makaiwas tayo sa kumakalat na virus.”

Having a cashless payment option like GCash QR also helped Ronnie Fabian, a textile store owner at the Pasig City Mega Market, attract customers outside of the public market.  “Nakakatulong siya, lalo na for transactions outside of the public market. Pag may mga tumatawag sa ‘kin para magpadeliver, usually hindi kami tumatanggap ng COD. Dahil sa GCash, ita-transfer na lang nila sa GCash ko yung payment.”

Entrepreneurs like Coleen Lopez, who has an RTW stall and owns an online shop called Coleen’s Businezz, is a long-time GCash user who is looking forward to using the Digital QR feature because it’s a faster and more secure way to accept payment from customers.  “Hassle free ang app na yan. Minsan may customer ako na kinulang yung dala niyang cash. Pero merong laman yung GCash nya. Yun na lang pinang-bayad niya instead na mag-withdraw pa siya sa ATM.”

“Since last year we have been pushing for cashless transactions among vendors and trike drivers to promote the health of all, para mawala yung physical transfer [ng virus]. It’s also a secure way to accept payment and to avoid circulation of counterfeit bills.  It’s about time our vendors and trike drivers adapt to this new business model, they need to enjoy the benefits of e-wallets and contactless payment,” added Pasig City Councilor Rhichie Gerard Brown.

Having empowered by the GCash platform, these owners of small businesses and drivers of TODA can further enjoy the benefits of using the app with its financial services products such as savings, investment, insurance, and credit. Since most of these palengke vendors and TODA drivers are among the financially underserved, empowering them to do their business through the app just like any other big merchant will help them cope up during these trying times.

“Our partner MSMEs and drivers are at the very soul of our existence as a mobile wallet. More than being a lifestyle brand, GCash is committed towards working with every sector in the society in order to tailor digital financial solutions relevant to the situation they may be in. With our expanding effort to bring GCash QR to MSMEs, we bring financial services closer to those who have no traditional access to these products. Truly this is a manifestation of our vision of for finance for all”, Sazon added.

To date of writing, GCash has on-boarded over 1,200 TODA drivers and over 100 palengke vendors. The company envisions on-boarding more of these businesses to provide better financial services access to all sectors in the society. Currently, TODA drivers around Antipolo area accept GCash as a payment method. Paying through GCash in palengkes is currently available in Farmers market and Pasig Mega.

Locally provides Taguig frontliners with immune-boosting natural juices

In true Bayanihan spirit, NutriAsia provided essential frontliners from Taguig City with Locally Blended Juice Drink.

Medical and non-medical frontliners in Taguig’s checkpoints, vaccination sites, and barangay enjoyed Locally’s blended juice drink, which are made from fruits cultivated by Filipino farmers. The drinks help the frontliners stay hydrated, energized, and protected from illness as they go about their important duties with the juices’ natural vitamin C.

Some residents in Barangay Fort also received Locally Blended juice drink. Recipients include peace and order personnel, emergency & rescue personnel, daycare students, employees of the DSWD barangay base, Health Center Personnel, barangay frontliners, and zone coordinators.

This follows NutriAsia’s donation of boxes of Locally to various hospitals around Metro Manila earlier this month.

“We are truly happy to do our part in ensuring that our brave and dedicated frontliners are hydrated and protected from all illnesses through providing delicious Locally juice drinks that boost their energy and immunity,” said Gretchen King, Category Manager for Beverages at NutriAsia.

“As we donate Locally to our frontliners, we also manage to support our local farm industry, which is key in providing the fruits we use for our drinks.”

The fight against the Covid-19 virus isn’t over. With the invisible enemy still out there, it is still best to arm ourselves with the immunity boost that vitamin C provides.

Locally has been handing out immunity and energy-boosting natural fruit juices to medical personnel, local government units, mobile markets, military staff, mobile kitchens, and more around the metro since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Together, we can all help each other out in healing and rebuilding our nation. Together, we can all help each other out in healing and rebuilding our nation.

Celebrating the #WomenOfLRT1

Every year around the world, March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day serving as a tribute, a platform, and a call for concrete, sustainable, and inclusive actions towards gender equality. At the height of the global pandemic, many women frontliners bravely took on the challenge of playing important roles in helping the country navigate through the new normal. Displaying resilience amidst unsettling conditions and determination to continue providing quality service despite tougher struggles, women have continuously shown the power to lead and thrive even in a difficult situation.

Within the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), many female team members have proven their strength to overcome personal challenges and continue to excel in a rather male-dominated industry. In support of the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW)’s #WomenMakeChange theme for 2021 National Women’s Month Celebration, here are some stories about the #WomenOfLRT1 to inspire and empower more women to be agents of change.

Lou Ambrosio
Lead Station Supervisor

Having spent nearly 15 years in the rail industry and working for LRT-1, Lou has the task of properly leading the team that directly interacts with customers, including station supervisors, tellers, and other personnel directly performing their functions within the station. With the goal of delivering a reliable and quality customer service to the riding public, the weight on her shoulders is pretty daunting.

As a front-liner, the pandemic has been challenging for Lou. “Isolation, contact restrictions, and economic shutdown completely changed us. For me, the first challenge I had was ensuring the safety of my family back home (in the province), the basic needs of my family, the thought of not seeing them due to travel restrictions, and the probability of getting and being sick due to the lack of responsiveness and carelessness of others. Second, the fear of losing my job due to the economic crisis. Lastly, the challenge to implement protocol and measures in the performance of my job and the thought of how to go about the situation confronted and tested my personality. This pandemic is a totally different experience and routine for me,” she says.

But like a true leader honed by years of experience, she managed to allay her worries and fears. “Being the kind of person who always looked on the brighter side of every situation, facing these times with self-care and care for others, and keeping my strong faith in God are some of my best weapons in overcoming these adversities.”

Christine Cunanan
Train Operator

It’s not every day we get to see a woman train operator, but Christine has bravely stepped up to the challenge amidst the risks and responsibilities entailed by the job. Working in a male-dominated industry, the pressure of being a woman train operator will always be there. But with the ongoing pandemic, the anxiety just doubles with the added risk of contracting the virus due to potential exposure.

But Christine is lucky to be working with her LRMC family. “I am very thankful to the company for providing and ensuring the health and safety of employees in our workplace,” she says. Christine also adds the extra measures she takes to make sure that she is able to accomplish her job well and ensure her safety. “Drivers must be cautious and must know the basic health safety protocol in this pandemic like proper wearing of face mask, face shield, proper disinfection, and keeping a safe distance,” Christine says.

Florence Bautista
Head of Human Resource and Admin

As the primary caretaker of LRMC’s employees, Florence has to look after the well-being and concerns of team members. “Although stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns have always been there, this pandemic brought the employee’s mental health to the forefront,” Florence says. As a general solution, she ensured that communication lines between management and employees—from top to bottom—remain open at all costs. “As a leader, I can never overemphasize the need to consistently reach out and communicate to our employees,” she says, marking the importance of communication, albeit virtual, at a time of physical distancing.

As the concurrent head of human resources and administration, there is obviously much on Florence’s plate as it is. But when the pandemic happened, the challenge became even tougher. “None of us had imagined that something like this would come, the sudden shift in work culture has brought a lot of challenges for HR,” says Florence. This includes their abrupt transition to working remotely/out of office work, which has somehow slowed down their operations as a company. But teamwork, as one of LRMC’s core values, grew stronger and allowed LRMC to continue performing the work that had to be done despite the challenging times. In some ways, the pandemic made the team stronger with team leaders increasing the check-in with their team. The human element in any crisis cannot be ignored, and LRMC’s HR team made sure to support team leaders in addressing concerns.

Melca Samson
Head of Buildings and Facilities Section & Infrastructure Division Manager

As the concurrent head of LRMC’s Buildings and Facilities Section, and manager of the Infrastructure Division, Melca plays a massive role in handling the overall management of tracks, buildings, and facilities and ensures all project and construction works are done on time. Like Lou, Melca’s main struggle during the pandemic was balancing responsibilities between work and home. “This pandemic has not been easy for everyone, indeed painful and worrying for me at times. There’s a lot of changes in my plans, I cry sometimes when overwhelmed with a difficult situation. But I need to be strong and adapt to the new changes and face the responsibilities,” she said.

Despite her predicament, Melca has managed to keep herself on track. “I stop, set and list down my priorities, slow down, and focus on the important things first. I’ve also learned to love myself and find a simple source of joy through gardening and planting.” Thanks to a new hobby, she was able to keep these worries off her mind and focus on her tasks at hand. “Seeing my plants growing can put a smile on my face and can be a happy conversation topic with my away husband and children. Watching funny videos on YouTube and Netflix movies with my youngest son is also another reason for me to laugh and have quality time with him.” Through it all, she has also kept her faith and determination to become even better both at home and at work.

Jireh Canoy
Head of Maintenance Planning Section

Working with a more optimized team of engineers and the unavoidable work-from-home scheme during the pandemic, Jireh found it challenging to juggle work and family responsibilities. “As a working mom, I have also been worried about my health and also for my family,” Jireh adds.

Despite the new challenges, Jireh has managed to harness strength from all her past experiences. “I overcome all my struggles with my faith in God,” she says. Jireh also focused on having a more positive outlook in dealing with her problems both at work and at home. “Second, I found my passion. I really enjoy the current job I have now despite all the challenges I faced during the pandemic.”

These few remarkable stories of women from within the LRMC prove that when women are given the right opportunities, they can thrive and excel in so many ways. Along with a good combination of their faith and resourcefulness, these inspiring women prove that even in a man’s world, there is nothing that a strong, resilient, and reliable woman cannot do.

NutriAsia kids pay tribute to hardworking frontliners with Salamat BayaNAI program

Through challenging times, NutriAsia’s own frontliners have remained dedicated to keeping shelves stocked with Filipinos’ favorite and trusted food products. In recognition of this, children of NutriAsia employees are honoring and further protecting them through their Salamat BayaNAI program.

Salamat BayaNAI is a project under Batang NutriAsia, a corporate program of NutriAsia for children of its employees.

Launched by Batang NutriAsia, an in-house summer program for children of NutriAsia employees, the Salamat BayaNAI program saw 3,800 face shields assembled and donated to NutriAsia merchandisers and employees for their protection. Despite the risks, these merchandisers served as the company’s front line in ensuring supermarkets and grocery stores remain stocked with NutriAsia products throughout the community quarantine, while employees from departments such as Human Resources, Total Quality Management, R&D, and Supply Chain also continued to report to work on site, making sure that all operations remained consistent throughout the situation.

Face shields were chosen for both their practicality and the protection they impart against COVID-19 and other diseases.

Children write messages of encouragement to NutriAsia’s own frontliners

The program also aims to give these employees emotional support, as the Batang NutriAsia kids added heartwarming handwritten thank-you notes to the frontliners.
“We want these frontliners to know that their work is appreciated, and their bravery is not forgotten,” said Sabine Flaminiano, Salamat BayaNAI project lead and a Batang NutriAsia graduate in her own right.

“Seeing the reactions of the store merchandisers and employees as they received our care packages was memorable—as their hard work and sacrifice are valued and recognized, this had brought big smiles and a boost to their morale.”

The MERIT of Batang NutriAsia
